The creators of Crossy Road are making a cool new Pac-Man game

Bandai Namco has tapped Crossy Road creators Hipster Whale to put their spin on Pac-Man for his 35th anniversary. The result? Pac-Man 256, a new mobile game that adds a clever twist to the dot-eating formula that's based on the original game's infamous level glitch. Pac-Man 256 is an endless maze runner in which Pac-Man eats dots, avoids ghosts and attempts to outrun a relentless threat: a wave of pixelated gibberish that threatens to overtake the screen. The glitched out wave of death is based on the 256th level of Pac-Man, which would corrupt the game's maze due to a programming bug, making it unplayable. Like mobile hit Crossy Road, Pac-Man 256 is played from an isometric perspective. Pac-Man will face his old nemeses, Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde, as well as other strains of...

One of the world's most successful game developers is missing something: a really big hit.

The curiously ordinary desire of Tim Schafer

Sonoma Valley High School senior Tim is strolling the corridors between classes. It's 1984. He's wearing a Toshiro Mifune T-shirt and jeans. Tim bumps into Lisa, a pal of his girlfriend. Tim normally hangs with the nerds who lurk in the computer club. Lisa is a smart, popular student who is mostly seen with the cool kids. They're not close, but they have an affinity, a particular cultural kink that draws them together. They talk about this one thing, because there's no one else at the school who shares their mutual passion. That one thing? The Ramones. While the other kids are listening to Prince, Van Halen and Culture Club, Lisa and Tim are comparing notes on End of the Century, the Ramones' fourth album, released in 1980. Following the Ramones' hugely influential 1970s work,...

Hearthstone: how to play a dragon paladin deck

Watch on YouTube | Subscribe to Polygon on YouTube We're going to be waiting for the next add-on for Hearthstone for a while, but we still love playing it and making videos about it. So while we wait for shiny new cards, we decided to pass the time by making some videos showing off some of the most popular or interesting decks being used in the game right now. First up: the dragon paladin. In the Blackrock Mountain add-on, paladins got the new "Dragon Consort" card, making them the obvious choice for dragon-heavy decks. This combination hasn't taken off as much as some people expected, but we've been loving it. Watch the video above to see the make-up of our deck, get some tips on what to do and maybe even see us win a few games. Also please ignore the missed lethal at 15 minutes. I...

Zombies, Run! is now free-to-play, and coming to Apple Watch

Zombies, Run! launched in 2012, and since then the fitness app has bulked up with legions of paid users looking to slim down. But today the game is relaunching, and its fourth iteration is a free-to-play app destined to land on the Apple Watch and similar Android devices before long. Polygon sat down with co-creator Adrian Hon a few weeks ago to find out more. He said the move to free-to-play was largely strategic one. "It's probably the biggest change we've made to the game," Hon said. "We're doing it for a number of positive and, frankly, defensive reasons. ... Zombies, Run! has always been an unusual thing. It's part fitness app, part game, part story, plus it's on smartphones. That combination is what has attracted people to us, but it's also harmed us because it's difficult for...

Mobile games outfit Gree closes Vancouver studio

Japanese mobile games company Gree today announced the closure of its Vancouver development studio. Gree operates mobile games such as Beyond the Dead, Modern War and Knights & Dragons. According to a blog post by COO Andrew Sheppard, the company is seeking to limit the number of games it releases. "Effective immediately, Gree International is shutting down our office in Vancouver, Canada and discontinuing the development of all mobile games from that studio," he wrote. "We have decided to focus our talent on building new gameplay within our biggest franchises." Polygon contacted a Gree representative to enquire how many jobs have been lost, and which projects have been cancelled. We'll update with any reply. Sheppard added that any Vancouver-based companies seeking talent should...

Press Start: Death and resurrection for comics, games and Schwarzenegger

When we looked back at the big stories from last week, we found a weird sense of coherency — and it all involves death and resurrection. The side that supports life includes SimCity creator Will Wright and his quest to build his next game … which isn't really a game. The cult favorite director Swery is also giving his latest game new life, as D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die heads to PC. Plus, the Assassin's Creed franchise will be reborn in London. But life implies death, and there was plenty of that, too. Marvel started killing dozens of comic books in Secret Wars. MachineGames released Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, which is a game about killing nazi zombies. And speaking of the undead, we published a review of Maggie, some surprisingly subversive Schwarzenegger cinema. It's not like we...

Five Nights at Freddy's creator gets a subpoena to find out who ripped off his game

A mysterious entity called Lazada Polodi sold an unofficial Five Nights at Freddy's sequel in the iOS app store, and the game's real developer hired a legal team to find out who that is.Attorneys for Scott Cawthon filed documents at the United States District Court for the Northern District of California yesterday. Those documents asked the court to issue a subpoena that would compel Apple, the operator of the iOS App Store where the unofficial sequel — Five Nights at Freddy's 4 — was sold, to disclose information about Lazada Polodi. The Clerk of Courts then issued a subpoena that commands Apple to provide "all identifying information of the user 'Lazada Polodi.'" That includes IP addresses from which the unauthorized game was uploaded and any others associated with Polodi as well as...

Sega removing some mobile games from app stores — but won't say which games

Sega of America says it will remove some of its older mobile games from Android and iOS app stores, explaining that some of those titles no longer meet the level of quality that players have come to expect. But it won't explicitly say which games are going to be removed from the iTunes App Store, Google Play Store and other mobile marketplaces. On the company's official blog, Sega said, "It is important for us to ensure that all of our fans, regardless of platform or operating system, have a great playing experience and after evaluating our complete list of titles, we have determined that a number of them no longer meet our standards." While those unspecified titles will be removed, Sega says some may return "in an updated form." Sega says that players who have purchased those...

EA Sports UFC on mobile updated to remove promotion of embattled Jon Jones

EA Sports UFC launched on Android and iOS last month. At the time, it heavily featured Jon Jones, one of the world's top mixed martial artists and the then-champion of the UFC's light heavyweight division. But developer EA Canada updated both versions yesterday to remove the promotion of Jones — although he is still a playable fighter in the game — presumably as a result of his arrest in late April in conjunction with his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run incident. Jones, 27, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death or personal injuries, which is a felony. Early on the morning of April 26, Jones allegedly ran a red light in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and struck a car driven by a pregnant woman. The woman, Vanessa Sonnenberg, suffered a broken arm in the crash,...
