In the fictional city of Monticello, attorney Mike Karr and his colleagues are involved in solving crimes and intrigue which touch the lives of many citizens. Some such citizens include dowager Geraldine Whitney, the frequently-married Raven Alexander, attorney Adam Drake and his wife, Nicole, attorney Draper Scott and his wife, April, Police Chief Bill Marceau, night club owner Johnny Dallas, physician Dr. Miles Cavanaugh, young Jody Travis and her many boyfriends, and Mike Karr himself, his wife, Nancy, and their daughter, Lorrie. All the usual soap opera devices, including prolonged amnesia, a woman with a split personality, murderous mobsters, usurped identities, and murders with many suspects, are used quite effectively in this long running serial.

"If people think I am paying that bill on 1 December, they have another thing coming," the prime minister said in Brussels. "It is not going to happen." He said the demand was "totally unacceptable" and no way for the EU to behave - and he wanted to examine how they arrived at the amount. EU finance ministers have agreed to the UK's request for emergency talks. Mr Cameron said he was "downright angry" and said the British public would find the "vast" sum "totally unacceptable". "It is an unacceptable way for this organisation to work - to suddenly present a bill like this for such a vast sum of money with so little time to pay it," he said. "It is an unacceptable way to treat a country which is one of the biggest contributors to the EU." He added: "We are not going suddenly to get out our cheque book and write a cheque for 2bn euros. It is not going to happen." David Cameron has angrily insisted the UK will not pay £1.7bn being demanded by the European Union on time. "If people think I am paying that bill on 1 December, they have another think coming," the prime minister said in Brussels. "It is not going to happen." But Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said the proposal should "not have come as a surprise" to the UK. He said it was made under a system agreed by all the member states and based on data provided by them. EU finance ministers have agreed to the UK's request for emergency talks about the top-up payment, which would add about a fifth to the UK's annual net EU contribution of £8.6bn. Mr Cameron said he was "downright angry" and said the British public would find the "vast" sum "totally unacceptable". "It is an unacceptable way for this organisation to work - to suddenly present a bill like this for such a vast sum of money with so little time to pay it," he said. "It is an unacceptable way to treat a country which is one of the biggest contributors to the EU." Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission: "This is an annual exercise based on figures given by each member state" He added: "We are not going suddenly to get out our cheque book and write a cheque for 2bn euros. It is not going to happen." But Mr Barroso, who steps don as Commission president next month, said the news should not "have come as a surprise" to the UK and the UK's contribution had fallen in 2008 under the same mechanism. "Of course I understand the concerns it has raised in London, but any person that wants to look at them with objectivity and honesty to the rules that were approved by the member states has to accept that sometimes these decisions happen," he told reporters in Brussels. Pushed at to what would happen if the UK did not pay, he said: "I cannot speculate on non-payment." "We cannot have a negotiation about the GDP of different countries... this should be left to independent statistics authorities," he added. He added that Eurostat, the EU statistics authority, which had come up with the calculation, was itself an independent body.

David Cameron photos perfectly show his fantasy vs. actual reality Photos made it look like he had loads of supporters at the barn he spoke in - but when we zoom out the picture looks quite different David Cameron looked like he was surrounded by cheering supporters on the campaign trail yesterday. When he visited a barn in Cornwall he had fans all around him, enthusiastically waving placards. It looked like a great success. In fact, it really seemed like pretty much the entire town had turned out to see the Conservative leader speak. However, a quick zoom out shows it was actually clever photography that made Cameron look much more popular than he actually is. It appears as if he asked the few people who did show up to gather round him, leaving the rest of the barn barren and empty. A comparison could be made between this scene and the state of the country if the Tories get in - all of the resources reserved for the few, and everything looking bleak for the rest of Britain.
