The jubilant story of George Gershwin.
George Gershwin: It's only with my music that I can prove my right to live. I must write!
Oscar Levant: I've got a date with my insomnia.
George Gershwin: I don't want to be just a concert pianist. I want to use the piano as a stepping stone!
Oscar Levant: If I had your talent, I'd be a pretty obnoxious fella. What do you call yourself?::George Gershwin: George Gershwin, it's my real name.::Oscar Levant: Mine's Oscar Levant. I'm thinking of changing it.
Max Dreyfus: [referring to "Porgy and Bess", which has just opened] You've made opera entertaining.
Julie Adams: What if this show is a flop?::George Gershwin: We'll do others. I haven't got time for flops.
Oscar Levant: Tell me, if you had it to do all over again, would you still fall in love with yourself?
Christine Gilbert: You can make up songs, George, but you can't make up lif.
Max Dreyfus: George, you can give America a voice.
Dreyfus receptionist: You're fresh!::Oscar Levant: Unfortunately you're not.

MAURICE RAVEL.- Cuarteto de cuerda in F major I Allegro Moderato. II. Assez vif – Très rythmé. III. Très lent. IV.

Pf: Martha Argerich Gaspard de la nuit: Trois poèmes pour piano d'après Aloysius Bertrand is a suite of pieces for solo piano by Maurice Ravel, written in 1908. It has three movements, each inspired on a fantastic prose poem by Aloysius Bertrand. In the poems, the author reports a series of surprising visions and adventures starring a character whose name is Gaspard. The name "Gaspard" is derived from original Persian form, denoting "the man in charge of the royal treasures": "Gaspard of the Night" or the treasurer of the night creates thus allusions to someone in charge of all that is jewel-Like, dark, mysterious, perhaps even morose. Ondine (00:00) An oneiric tale of a water fairy singing to seduce the observer into visiting her kingdom deep at the bottom of the lakes. It is reminiscent of Ravel's early piano masterpiece, the Jeux d'eau (1901), with the sounds of water falling and flowing, woven with cascades. The final measures can be interpreted as the fall of the observer and then his despair and drowning, followed by the return of the tranquility on the waters. Le Gibet (05:58) The observer is presented with a view of the desert, where the lone corpse of a hanged man on a gibbet stands out against the horizon, reddened by the setting sun; the sound of a bell tolls from inside the walls of a far-off city, creating the deathly atmosphere that surrounds the observer. Throughout the entire piece is a B-flat octave ostinato, imitative of the tolling bell, that must remain distinctive and constant in tone as the notes cross over and dynamics change. Scarbo (11:41) This movement depicts the nighttime mischief of a small fiend or goblin, making pirouettes, flitting in and out of the darkness, disappearing and suddenly reappearing. Its uneven flight, hitting and scratching against the walls, casting a growing shadow in the moonlight, creates a nightmarish scene for the observer lying in his bed. With its repeated notes and two terrifying climaxes, this is the high point of technical difficulty of the three movements. Technical difficulties include repeated notes in both hands, and double-note scales in major seconds in the right hand. Ravel reportedly said about Scarbo: "I wanted to write an orchestral transcription for the piano."

noodls 2015-02-23Joseph-Maurice Ravel (March 7, 1875 – December 28, 1937) was a French composer known especially for his melodies, orchestral and instrumental textures and effects. Much of his piano music, chamber music, vocal music and orchestral music has entered the standard concert repertoire.
Ravel's piano compositions, such as Jeux d'eau, Miroirs, Le tombeau de Couperin and Gaspard de la nuit, demand considerable virtuosity from the performer, and his orchestral music, including Daphnis et Chloé and his arrangement of Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, uses a variety of sound and instrumentation.
Ravel is perhaps known best for his orchestral work Boléro (1928), which he considered trivial and once described as "a piece for orchestra without music".
According to SACEM, Ravel's estate earns more royalties than that of any other French composer. According to the law of most countries (including all members of the World Trade Organization), Ravel's works have been in the public domain since January 1, 2008, in most countries.
