Eine seiner Nachbarinnen, eine vornehme, aber arme Dame, hatte zwei sehr schöne Töchter. Er warb bei ihr, es der Mutter überlassend, welche von beiden sie ihm geben wolle. Sie mochten aber alle beide von dieser Partie nichts wissen, und eine wollte ihn der andern aufreden, da sich keine entschließen konnte, einen Mann mit blauem Barte zu heiraten. Auch hatte es etwas Abschreckendes, daß Blaubart schon mehrere Male verheiratet gewesen und daß man nicht wußte, was aus seinen bisherigen Frauen geworden. Es war das jedenfalls ein verdächtiger Umstand. Blaubart aber kannte die Weiber und die Mittel, ihnen die Köpfe zu verdrehen. Er lud die Mutter und die Töchter samt einigen ihrer Freundinnen und mehrere junge Männer auf eines seiner Schlösser, wo man sich durch acht Tage aufs angenehmste unterhielt. Da ging es hoch und lustig her; nichts als Landpartien, Bälle, Mahlzeiten, Gesellschaftsspiele, Neckereien, dazu wohlangebrachte Geschenke an die Mädchen wie an die Mutter und an die Freundinnen, die auf die Schwestern am meisten Einfluß hatten. Kurz, nach acht Tagen fand die jüngere Schwester, daß der Bart ihres Wirtes nur bläulich, nicht blau, und daß er selbst im ganzen und großen ein recht galanter Ritter und höchst annehmbarer Ehemann sei. Wenige Wochen nach diesen Lustbarkeiten war Hochzeit......

Charles Perrault (12 January 1628 – 16 May 1703) was a French author and member of the Académie française. He laid the foundations for a new literary genre, the fairy tale, with his works derived from pre-existing folk tales. The best known of his tales include Le Petit Chaperon rouge (Little Red Riding Hood), Cendrillon (Cinderella), Le Chat Botté (Puss in Boots), La Belle au bois dormant (The Sleeping Beauty) and La Barbe bleue (Bluebeard). Many of Perrault's stories, which were rewritten by the Brothers Grimm, continue to be printed and have been adapted to opera, ballet (such as Tchaikovsky's The Sleeping Beauty), theatre, and film (Disney). Perrault was an influential figure in the 17th-century French literary scene, and was the leader of the Modern faction during the Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns. Mit dem Verteilen ging es rasch. Notar und Rechtsanwalt wurden erst gar nicht gebeten; sie hätten das armselige Erbe schnell aufgezehrt. Der älteste bekam die Mühle, der zweite den Esel und der dritte den Kater. Der jüngste konnte sich aber nicht darüber hinwegtrösten, daß er ein so armseliges Los gezogen hatte! »Meine Brüder«, sagte er, »können sich zusammentun und ehrlich ihr Brot verdienen, aber wenn ich meinen Kater aufgegessen habe und mir aus seinem Fell einen Muff habe machen lassen, werde ich vor Hunger sterben. « Der Kater, der dies mit anhörte, es sich aber nicht anmerken ließ, sprach zu ihm mit ernster und gewichtiger Miene: »Seid nicht traurig, mein Herr, Ihr braucht mir nur einen Sack zu geben und mir ein Paar Stiefel machen zu lassen, mit denen ich durchs Gebüsch streifen kann, und Ihr werdet sehen, daß Ihr gar kein so schlechtes Teil erhalten habt, wie Ihr meint.« Wenn auch der junge Herr diesen Worten nicht allzuviel Wert beimaß, so hatte er bei dem Kater doch eine ganz außerordentliche Findigkeit beim Fangen von Ratten und Mäusen beobachtet: da hatte er sich an den Pfoten aufgehängt oder sich im Mehl versteckt und sich tot gestellt, und so zweifelte er nicht daran, daß er ihm in seinem Elend helfen werde. Als der Kater seinen Wunsch erfüllt sah, zog er artig seine Stiefel an, warf sich den Sack über die Schulter, nahm die Schnüre in die beiden Vorderpfoten und machte sich auf den Weg zu einem Wildgehege, wo es Kaninchen im Überfluß gab. Er steckte Kleie und Lattich in seinen Sack, stellte sich tot und wartete, daß irgendein junges Kaninchen, das noch wenig von den Schlingen der Welt erfahren hatte, in seinen Sack hineinschlüpfen und fressen würde, was er da hineingesteckt hatte. Kaum hatte er sich niedergelegt, so hatte er bereits Erfolg. Ein junges vorwitziges Kaninchen lief in den Sack hinein, und Meister Kater zog augenblicklich die Schnüre zu, packte es und tötete es erbarmungslos. Voller Stolz auf seine Beute begab er sich zum König und verlangte ihn zu sprechen. Man führte ihn hinauf zu den Gemächern Seiner Majestät; er trat ein, machte eine große Verbeugung vor dem König und sprach: »Majestät, hier bringe ich Euch ein Kaninchen, das der Herr Marquis von Carabas (so hatte es ihm beliebt, seinen Herrn nunmehr zu nennen) mich beauftragt hat, Euch in seinem Namen zu überreichen. »Sage deinem Herrn«, entgegnete der König, »daß ich ihm danke und daß er mir eine Freude gemacht hat.« ..........
