Over the past year, thousands across CAR have been killed and nearly a million have been displaced. The United Nations recently stated that the entire Western half of the country has now been cleansed of Muslims. CAR has never fully recovered from France's colonial rule, and it has only known ten years of a civilian government - from 1993 to 2003 - since achieving independence in 1960. Coup after coup, often with French military involvement, has led many to refer to the country as a phantom state. The current conflict has now completely erased the rule of law and order, and left the UN and international community looking confused and impotent. In March 2013, the Séléka, a mostly Muslim rebel alliance, rose up and overthrew the corrupt government of François Bozizé, while bringing terror and chaos across the country - pillaging, killing and raping with impunity. In response, mostly Christian self-defense forces, called the anti-balaka, formed to defend CAR against Séléka attacks. Clashes grew more frequent throughout 2013 as the Séléka grew more ruthless. In December 2013, French and African troops went in to disarm the Séléka and staunch the bloodshed. The anti-balaka, seizing on a weakened Séléka, then went on the offensive. CAR had no real history of religious violence, and the current conflict is not based on any religious ideology. The fighting, however, turned increasingly sectarian in the fall of 2013, with revenge killings becoming the norm. And as the Séléka's power waned, the anti-balaka fed their need for revenge by brutalizing Muslim civilians. "Too few peacekeepers were deployed too late; the challenge of disarming the Séléka, containing the anti-balaka, and protecting the Muslim minority was underestimated," Human Rights Watch said in a recent statement. The bloodshed has not stopped. The UN is still debating whether or not to send peacekeepers. Even if a peacekeeping operation is approved, it will take six months for troops to be assembled. One handwritten banner read "yes to France", "no" to the Chadian force. The Muslims from Seleka took power in a coup in March, installing their own interim head of state. Thousands fled a gun battle between Chadian troops escorting a convoy of Muslim civilians and local militia in the Central African Republic Tuesday, as Chad completed a withdrawal of soldiers from its violence-ravaged neighbor. The Chadian troops were escorting the last 540 Muslim residents of the northwestern town of Bossangoa to Gore in Chad when militia attacked the convoy at night on April 11th as it passed through Boguila, around 310 miles north of the capital Bangui. The Chadian soldiers fought back, and three wounded were later admitted to MSF facilities in Boguila and Paoua. The Central African Republic has descended into chaos since the mainly Muslim Seleka rebel coalition seized power a year ago. The incident reflected the growing complexity of the situation in the Central African Republic, a former French colony plunged into chaos last year after a coalition of mostly Muslim rebels ousted President Francois Bozize. They have since been forced out of power, but Christian and Muslim militias continue to battle for control. Human rights investigators said the March 29 incident began when Chadian national army soldiers entered Bangui in a convoy of several military pick-up trucks. They entered a crowded market where shoppers included women and children, and opened fire, a U.N. report said Friday. "As panic-stricken people fled in all directions, the soldiers allegedly continued firing indiscriminately," said Rupert Colville, spokesman for the U.N.'s office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. "Several sources told the investigating team that they believed the Chadian force had entered Bangui to extract remaining Chadians and other Muslim inhabitants in order to save them from further attacks by (Christian militias)," Colville said. The U.N. said the soldiers who were responsible for the Bangui attack were Chadian soldiers but not among those who are part of the African-led International Support Mission peacekeeping mission that's trying to stabilize the Central African Republic. "It seems they have gone straight back to Chad without being apprehended," Colville said of the attackers. About 850 Chadian soldiers are part of the 6,000-strong peacekeeping presence, but on Thursday, Chad's foreign ministry issued a statement saying the country planned to withdraw its troops from the force, according to CNN French affiliate BFMTV. "Despite the sacrifices we have made, Chad and Chadians have been targeted in a gratuitous and malicious campaign that blamed them for all the suffering in (Central African Republic)," said a statement from Chad's foreign ministry. According to estimates, 35,000 Central Africans have taken refuge in Cameroon and 82,000 in Chad. Their living conditions are deplorable and humanitarian aid is largely insufficient in both countries. This truck from Central African Republic has just entered Garoua Boulai, a small town in Cameroon that's transformed into a refugee camp. On board the truck are dozens of people, most of whom are Muslims. They have endured a dangerous and harrowing journey that took several days to escape from the atrocities committed by anti-balaka militias. Moustafa, refugee (man in Sango) They killed my father and my mother, my sister and the rest of the family. It was the neighbour who killed my mother and father - that what really hurts. In both Chad and Cameroon, the MSF teams see refugees who are deprived of everything, but above all food and shelter. In Goré, one of the main crossing points to Chad for Central African refugees, 6,000 people live crammed together around an old hospital. Women hang their veils on branches to provide a little shelter. They will be hopelessly inadequate when the rainy season starts in a few weeks time. Anthony Ngoyi, programme coordinator, MSF Plastic sheeting for shelters is going to have to be distributed in a few weeks, at the end of March; it might be a problem. Utensils like hygiene and cooking kits are also going to be an issue. Some of the people here were lucky enough to be able to bring some things with them but the majority fled with nothing. Those arriving in Chad face yet another problem as they are not recognised as refugees—although some may have Chadian nationality, for the most part they are Central Africans. Living temporarily in transit centres with very little access to aid, thousands of people await while governments and the United Nations decide what to do with them. President Idriss Deby Itno of the Republic of Chad has congratulated President Jonathan for the statesmanship demonstrated during the General Elections. The Chadian President made this known when he paid a solidarity visit to President Jonathan in the State House. President Itno described President Jonathan as a true democrat who has allowed Peace to reign in Nigeria. The Two leaders who had earlier held talks behind closed doors promised to continue to work together in the fight against Boko Haram. President Deby said his visit ahead of the inauguration of the next administration was to have an overview of the joint efforts in dealing with insurgency in Nigeria.

Congo, Chad Presidents Burn Seized Ivory in Protest

The presidents of the Republic of Congo and Chad have set alight five tons of ivory seized from poachers to mark their commitment to fighting poaching on the continent. The burning took place on the sidelines of International Conference on the Illegal Exploitation and Illegal Trade in Wild Flora and Fauna in Africa. The United Nations Development Program said Wednesday that leaders are drafting the first pan-African strategy to combat the illicit trade in flora and fauna, which will be presented to the African Union. Republic of Congo President Denis Sassou N'Guesso said poaching is one of the most savage practices of the time, bringing the continent's elephant population from more than 1 million in 1980 to 450,000. ( Updated Video 26 Dec) Dozens of people have been killed, including six peacekeepers from Chad, in the latest violence in the Central African Republic, officials say. The peacekeepers were attacked by a Christian militia known as anti-balaka in the capital Bangui on Wednesday. At least 40 other people have also died since Wednesday, Red Cross officials said. African Union (AU) and French troops are battling to end a Christian-Muslim conflict that has engulfed CAR. The AU has nearly 4,000 troops in CAR. France, the former colonial power, has also deployed 1,600 soldiers to help restore order. Militias from the Christian and Muslim groups have been involved in attacks and counter-attacks since Michel Djotodia installed himself as the country's first Muslim ruler in March, ousting then-President Francois Bozize, who came from the majority Christian population. Many Christians accuse the Chadian government of being allied to the Seleka rebel group which propelled Mr Djotodia to power, while Muslims allege that French forces are siding with Christian militia. Tension high The circumstances surrounding the death of the Chadians remain unclear. AU spokesman Eloi Yao said: "Yesterday [Wednesday] the city was in total chaos and this chaos lasted until the end of the night. Today we are trying to understand what happened." Heavy gunfire in Bangui had caused panic among civilians, who fled to the airport, which is protected by peacekeepers. "Around 40 bodies have been recovered for the moment, and first aid has been given to around 30 people wounded," Red Cross spokesman David Pierre Marquet said. As fighting subsided, French troops went out on patrol. French military spokesman Col Gilles Jaron said tension remained high in Bangui. Since the turn of the new millennium, Transparency International has published the Corruption Perceptions Index annually ranking countries by their perceived levels of corruption, as determined by expert assessments and opinion surveys. The CPI draws on data sources from independent institutions specializing in governance and business climate analysis. As Transparency International points out, the CPI it is not a verdict on the levels of corruption of entire nations or societies, or of their policies, but rather an indicator of perceptions of public sector corruption, i.e. administrative and political corruption. While the first places (with the lowest corruption) are almost invariable with New Zealand and Northern European countries ranking at the very top, the bottom of the list is more changeable. "Rollin' in Dakar" is the prequel to a film which will go into production early 2015. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. Many visitors come to Tanzania to summit this great mountain. The main peak is estimated to be 5895m high making it a real challenge for mountaineers.

2014 Africa Progress Report: Grain, Fish, Money

From Sierra Leone to Chad, Africa remains one of the world’s fastest growing regions. In the past decade and a half, the only global region to grow consistently faster than Sub-Saharan Africa has been developing Asia. Africa’s average incomes have risen by a third. Oil, gas, and minerals have been driving much of this growth in countries such as Sierra Leone, Ghana, and Mozambique. But non-extractive sectors – including agriculture - have been key in countries such as Cote d’Ivoire, Rwanda, and Ethiopia,. Despite Africa’s impressive growth, however, too few people are benefitting. Inequality is growing. And more than 413 million people still live below the poverty line. Just four countries -- Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, and Ethiopia - account for half of Africa’s poor. African governments could reduce this poverty by boosting agriculture, a sector that supports two thirds of all African people. Indeed, Africa could feed itself but instead it imports food worth US$35 billion per year. Food production in Sub-Saharan Africa is falling behind. It now exports less than Thailand. But Africa’s applied tech innovations show African creativity when given the right opportunity. Developed by Africans for Africa and the world, this digital and mobile technology is accelerating Africa’s productivity growth. Indeed Africa’s agricultural productivity could easily double within five years. Urbanisation, hunger, and the heavy cost of food import bills mean that Africa must produce more food. Africa could – and should – produce enough food to feed Africa and the world. Global population is set to grow from 7.2 billion to 9.6 billion by 2050. Urban populations will grow even faster. Global food demand is expected to double. This is an excellent commercial opportunity for African agriculture. The 2014 Africa Progress Report – Grain, Fish, Money – urges African governments to invest more in their agricultural sectors, which directly affects two thirds of Africa’s population The examples of Zambia Liberia, and Mozambique show that time, effort, and money can produce impressive agricultural growth. Growing agricultural sectors can drive national growth too, benefitting the wider population more generally. The 2014 Africa Progress Report also highlights illegal practices, such as the plunder of Africa’s timber and fisheries that hit the continent hard. Illegal logging costs the continent an estimated US$17 billion ever year, while, illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing costs West Africa alone a conservatively estimated US$1.3 billion every year. Foreign boats are not just taking fish, they are stealing food, jobs, and income. Tax avoidance and evasion are major issues too. Africa has been losing an estimated 5.7 percent of its GDP to illicit financial flows, more than any other region in the world. Worth US$50 billion each year, this is more than the continent spends on health. Africa is rich in its natural resources, including agricultural resources. But this wealth must reach more people. We all win from an Africa that is prosperous, stable, and fair.

South Africa's Olympic stars Chad & Cameron qualify for 2015 Swimming world championships

Olympic gold medalist Chad Le Clos admits he is concerned and disappointed with his form ahead of the World Championships set for Russia later this year. He lost out to countryman Myles Brown in the 200 meter freestyle in the South African championships earlier this week and he only just managed to obtain the qualifying time in his main event, the two hundred meter butterfly. He told our reporter Dan Williams that he is still confident of winning gold in Russia.
