Nigel is a small gold mining and heavy industries town. With the recent closure of the gold mines, the industrial industries have kept the town viable. The Gautrain rail cars were assembled and dispatched from here with electricity line hardware and towers being manufactured in the town.
The Marievale Bird Sanctuary is a wetland area, about 10 km outside of town, hosts over 65 water bird species more than 3,500 types of birds. One of the few places spot the goliath, black squacco and purple heron as well as some of the rare wader migrants from the northern hemisphere. Marsh owls can be seen in the grasslands during winter.
The privately owned Nigel Nature Reserve is stocked with ostrich, duiker and small herds of springbok and zebra with ducks and geese frequenting the small dam in the reserve.
Diepkloof Farm Museum, Aeronautical Museum and the privately owned and run Train Museum with its impressive collection of historical trains are worth a visit.
