Klerksdorp

Klerksdorp was founded in 1837 which makes it the oldest European settlement of the former Transvaal. Gold was discovered in 1886 which started a gold rush to the town. Klerksdorp is the centre of the large mining and agricultural economy and has the second largest grain co-operative in the world. It will be a large uranium producer in the future.

Klerksdorp housed a large concentration camp in 1899-1902 and boasts a notable medical, retail and educational centre which serves the North West Province and Northern Free State.

There are a number of historical sites: A large rock engraving site with over 400 Bushman and Khoe herder engravings; Goudkoppie, Jack Scott House, Old Cemetry, Stock Exchange Building, The Railway Station and Old Flag Room.

Activities include: Mine Tours, Museum, Ou Dorp Hiking Trail, Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve, flyfishing and to the Johan Neser Dam.

Old president FW de Klerk was once an attorney in Klerksdorp and Archbichop Desmond Tutu were born in Klerksdorp.
