Project Bhutan: Politics and Government - Part 2 of 4.
Project Bhutan: Politics and Government - Part 2 of 4.
First of all, today I am wearing a yellow and white striped shirt. Secondly, on this presentation of Project Bhutan I talk about the Government and Politics of the Kingdom of Bhutan. I describe the old government settings in Bhutan for then analizing the Modernization of Bhutan started by His Majesty King Jigme Singye Wangchuck. During the '90s the process of modernization meant the transfer of power from the monarch to the National Assembly and to the different Ministries. The figure of the Prime Minister starts having importance, and finally we can see that Bhutan goes from an absolut monarchy to a constitutional monarchy. This is something that takes place at the beginning of the '00s, when on the year 2001 a draft of the Constitution is created. The actual Constitution of Bhutan was presented to the people in 2005, and 2 years later it entered into force. During 2007-2008 the first parlamentary elections are held in the Kingdom. It is also important to have in mind that the process of modernization also carried the change of the monarch, on the year 2008 King Jigme Singye Wangchuck is going to let the throne of the Kingdom to his son, who is the actual monarch of Bhutan, King Jigme Khesar Wangchuck. On the video I also explain the Parlamentary Configuration that Bhutan has, the Upper and Lower Houses and also the actual number of seats that the different political parties have. The political system of Bhutan has two main political parties, the People's Democratic ...

Bhutan: Election Results Are In
Bhutan: Election Results Are In
ANCHOR: The people of Bhutan delivered an unexpected verdict in their first ever parliamentary polls Monday. They have embraced democracy, but surprised many with who they voted into office. Here's more. STORY: Bhutanese seem to have found their voice after a century of royal rule. Landslide winner was Jigmi Thinley, a man very closely associated with the country's revered and loved king, who promoted himself as a champion of ordinary people. The present king's uncle, Sangay Ngedup, was trounced in the polls, winning just three of 47 seats. But regardless of the results a solid foundation of democracy was built. [Dasho Kunzang Wangdi, Chief Election Commissioner]: "It is a day that we are proud to tell the world that the Bhutanese people answered the call of their majesty to lay a sound foundation for democratic constitutional monarchy. We want to tell you that people are together to make this process a great success." Yet this was not a vote against the kings of Bhutan or a century of royal rule. Most people were upset when King Jigme Singye Wangchuck said he was imposing democracy instead of handing power down to his son. Bhutan's people voted for stability, and chose a party with plenty of experience of serving under the fourth king, and promises to preserve the achievements of his rule. The world's newest democracy now has one of the world's smallest oppositions, with just three members of parliament.
