Juan José Arévalo Bermejo (10 September 1904 – 8 October 1990) was the first of the reformist presidents of Guatemala. Preceded by military junta interregnum after a definitive pro-democracy revolt in 1944. Arévalo's 1944 election is considered by historians the first fair and democratic election in Guatemala's republican history; since independence from Spain, the country had seen a series of dictatorships.
Arévalo served as President from 15 March 1945 to 15 March 1951. Arévalo's administration was marked by unprecedented relatively free political life during his six year term. Arévalo, an educator and philosopher, understood the need for advancement in individuals, communities, and nations by practical means. Before his presidency, Arévalo had been an exiled university professor. He returned to Guatemala to help in the reconstructive efforts of the new post-Ubíco government, especially in the areas of social security and drafting of a new Constitution. His philosophy of "spiritual socialism," referred to as Arevalísmo, may be considered less an economic system than a movement toward the liberation of the imagination of oppressed Latin America. In the post-World War II period, internationalist players such as the United States regarded Arevalísmo socialism as Communism, and therefore cause for unease and alarm, which garnered support from neighboring satellite caudillos such as Anastasio Somoza García.

Yes I'm changing my ways baby
I ain't gonna be like I used to be
My past is behind me baby
I ain't gonna be like I used to be
I used to give you all of my money woman
And I wouldn't save a dime for me
You used to treat me like a fool baby
Still I loved everything you done
I was just your fool, I was your fool baby
And I worshipped everything you did like a king
Yes if you ever, if you ever loved me woman
Yes I tell you baby you must have kept it hid
Yes you can go...out of your tears
And get that mistreated look off your face
Yes you know I feel what I feel baby
I tell you I just won't be no more
And then that you realise woman
Everybody's jumpin' down the...
here we come to demolish the wall. weve waited years to witness this fall. today we see the truth among curious lies. weve come to seek justice with our own eyes. brick by brick we slave for a life and mortar mix for dimes. we wont allow ourselves to be beat. we wont level this wall of dirty deeds. our rise will be your fall. with force we'll crush your wall. yet it is true how weve been kept in the dark. for our life lacks the beauty of yours. and while the poorer get poorer you could care less because youre set for life with riches. brick after brick weve slaved for your life and mortar mix for nothing but dimes. never again will we ever be beat. nor will we level this wall full of dirty deeds.
In the wet grass out back
we spread the sheet
and with one last easy laugh
the night released
we breathed the dark, the shaking stars
the distant, constant cars
breathed the sweet
air between us
What was it like?
to be young, strong, stupid and drunk
soft in the jagged night
my open, rosy throat
dekeing secret knives
now we close these petals
to the oncoming ice
And I'm not coming out, I'm not coming out, I'm not coming out, I'm not
Coming out.
My love, my love is dead I buried it
in the falling leaves, looking awful green, in the whipping wind
my love, my love is dead I buried it
and it's better hid, all the shit we sling into the whipping wind
my love, my love is dead I buried it
just an honest kid, I always did everything they said
my love, my love is dead I buried it
You say that it's over this time for good
But this time around you know that I wish that you would
Not call me on the phone, I need to get used to being alone
And now you tell me you want me to be your friend
But don't you know I'll be your fool again?
You say now you're gone and you won't be back
But this time around I'm just a little bit smarter than that
Just 'cause you've packed your bags
That doesn't mean that you won't return
That's the lesson I learned the last time I let you back in
Don't you know I'll be your fool again?
Don't you know I'll be your fool again?
My friends tell me that they doubt it
When I tell them I can learn to live without it
They say it's a game that I can't win, oh
You say you found a new man and he treats you fine
You say he brings you flowers and bottles of cheap red wine
You say you like the way he wears his hair
But don't you know I wouldn't care if you ever walk out on him
Don't you know I'll be your fool again?
Don't you know I'll be your fool again?
