Die Jungs schlagen einen weiten Bogen durch das Garage Rock Genre und liefern auf ihrer Reise einige Hits ab, die von Garagepunk über Surf bis Psychedelia mit so einigem aufwarten. Denkt an Rocket from the Crypt, die sich die Bude mit Man or Astroman, Ty Segall und den Oh Sees teilen und den ganzen Tag trinken, rauchen und musizieren.

Night Shirts Bayern

Der nächste Streich aus dem Hause This Charming Man. Oder sagen wir besser der nächste Strike, denn das Debut der Night Shirts über das wir hier sprechen ist wirklich ein Volltreffer. Die Night Shirts sind vier Jungs aus Bayern mit einem Sound der kaum weiter entfernt von ihrer physischen Heimat sein könnte. Ihr Stil ist eine unglaublich stimmige Mischung aus Garage-Punk, Blues und einer Prise Psych, inklusive schneidender Fuzzgitarren und allem was dazu gehört. Durch das schmissige Songwriting erhält das Ganze eine Power Poppige Kante ohne ins belanglos poppige abzuglitschen. Das Alles klingt offen und modern und man zwengt sich gottseidank nicht in das Korsett des klassichen 60s Sounds. Seitdem die Black Lips die Garagenszene soundtechnisch und optisch befreit haben, wird sich vermutlich fast jede neue Garagepunk Band mit eben jenem Namedropping abfinden müssen. Im Falle der Night Shirts, passt dieser Vergleich durchaus , und zwar vor allem auf die bluesigeren Momente, ohne dass man das Gefühl hat hier würde lediglich ein Stil kopiert. Vielmehr wird dieser Stil um eine starke eigene Note erweitert und so im Grunde weiterentwickelt. Und das tut verdammt gut! Beim Genuss der 12 Songs von „…Live from Queimada Grande“ kommt einem die ein oder andere Klassikerband und eine handvoll moderne Klassiker in den Sinn.

Retox Epitaph / Ipecac Rec / Three One G – San Diego, USA

Currently consisting of Justin Pearson (The Locust, Head Wound City, All Leather, Swing Kids), Michael Crain (Festival of Dead Deer, Kill the Capulets), Brian Evans, and Keith Hendriksen (Kill the Capulets, Virginia Reed), Retox is marked by a speed and sound that seeks to shatter apathy. Since their conception in 2011, they have toured with similarly like-minded acts such as Melt-Banana, Tomahawk, OFF!, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Doomsday Student, physically bringing every bit as much intensity as the music itself incites intellectually.

Coming off of their sophomore album, “YPLL” (Years of Potential Life Lost), Retox have emerged from the collective depths of San Diego and Los Angeles with their latest antagonistic efforts, entitled “Beneath California”. Varying styles and sonically experimenting, melding the raw with the refined, the band continuously teases yet never settles on any one genre— aside from perhaps (as members of the band itself have referred to their work) “annoying”. Tracks such as “Death Will Change Your Life” spit cynical lyrics drenched in rapid-fire rhythm: “All those who have died before me, forgot trustees, cleaned streets with parolees/They dragged everything into the sea, the filth and the debris, and hoped none would see.”

Overall, Retox simultaneously seems to reflect and defy, using music as a way of holding a broken mirror to the rest of us, exposing different pieces of our own fucked up realities, and forcing the acknowledgement of the inevitable self-imposed apocalypse we are creating for ourselves.

ZEUS! Three One G Records, Italia

ZEUS! is a “Made in Italy” drums + bass duo, born in october ’10. Utilized instruments: drums with full set of cymbals and pedals; full optional overdrived bass; dual pitch damaged vocals. Utilized tech: grinding the rock all and so on. ZEUS! aims at using the minimum in order to get the maximum and is: not metal, not punk, not math, not noise, not prog, absolutely not jazz-core, neither post-whatever. In case, a sum of micro compositions of these times, picassian and psychodelic, insofar as the peculiar melodies “liberate thought from social conventions superstructures”. For petardo lovers.
