The story is about Anand Sehgal (Rajesh Khanna), a cancer (lymphosarcoma of the intestine) patient who believes in living his life to the fullest. He comes to Mumbai to live his last days there and to meet his friend Kulkarni (Ramesh Dev). Contrasting Anand is Bhaskar Banerjee (Amitabh Bachchan), a sober doctor, upset with life and the dark reality of his nation. After spreading happiness everywhere around himself and changing the lives of many, Anand, as destined, leaves them all, which inspires Bhaskar to write a book on his life.

The police belief that the killer only targets women is abruptly shattered when Anasuya's elderly male landlord is killed ... and Anasuya witnesses the killer fleeing the scene. Anasuya and Anand must work together to identify the suspect and prevent him from killing more people. But nothing is quite as it seems! Will Anasuya and Anand succeed in finding the killer before he kills them? Why is the serial killer on this peculiar path? And what is the unexpected connection with young Lakshmi?
