South Sudan became the world's newest state when it seceded from Sudan in 2011 but by December 2013 President Salva Kiir had sacked his entire cabinet and accused his former vice-president Riek Machar of instigating a coup, which sparked off violent clashes in the capital Juba. The initial conflict may have been based on a power struggle between two of the top members of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement but the divisions between two of the largest ethnic groups, the Dinka and the Nuer, soon became the driving force of tit-for-tat attacks across the country. The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has warned that they need greater military force to protect civilians in the country and aid agencies are predicting food, water and medical supply shortages. With a humanitarian disaster seemingly on the way, we look at the background to what's going on in South Sudan. Oh, rich people. Do they ever stop doing zany things? Unfortunately, there’s a new fad among America’s most wealthy that isn’t quite as laughable. During recent years, the richest people in Los Angeles have not been vaccinating their children. Gary Baum of The Hollywood Reporter has investigated childhood illness and vaccination rates around Los Angeles County. He discovered that some schools in the most affluent L.A neighborhoods have vaccination rates lower than Southern Sudan. Let that sink in for a minute; one of the poorest regions in the world that is unable to supply clean drinking water for half of its inhabitants has a greater vaccination rate than schools that educate the offspring of Hollywood’s elite. Vaccination records must be submitted to schools at the time of a child’s enrollment. Otherwise, the parent can file a “personal belief exemption” (PBE) claim, which absolves them of that responsibility. Some parents have filed PBEs, even though their child is vaccinated, due to an inability to find the records following a move, or if the child’s records are due before they can get an appointment and get up to speed. However, a bill passed this year now requires a physician signature on all PBEs and immunization records, so those filing them out of convenience will not be able to continue to do so. Baum found that over the last two years, the number of PBEs filed in L.A County has increased by 2.2 percent overall, but some of the most elite preschools have jumped by 57-68 percent during that same time span. He also made the not-so-shocking discovery that the schools with the lowest vaccination rates had the highest instances of childhood diseases including measles and whooping cough. California had an outbreak of whooping cough earlier this year that reached epidemic proportions, resulting in the death of three infants. Measles rates in the area are higher than they have been in over 20 years. Of course, not everyone can be vaccinated. Certain immunocompromised individuals are unable to receive the vaccines even if they desperately wanted to. Instead of gaining protection through the vaccines, they rely on their peers to provide herd immunity and cull the spread of diseases. However, when less than 94 percent of a group is vaccinated, herd immunity falls apart and could have fatal consequences. Certain elite schools in L.A are flirting with that barrier, if they haven’t already crossed it. Baum found that most of the parents eschewing vaccines completely or who are not following the timetable put forward by the CDC have good intentions, but lack of scientific evidence to back up their position, which is creating an incredible problem. Severe adverse reactions because of vaccinations are exceedingly rare, and there is no scientific evidence to suggest that vaccines are linked to autism. Skipping vaccines due to scientific illiteracy is maddening nonsense. Children’s lives are on the line, and hopefully this trend will reverse before it is too late. Travel video about destination Ethiopia. Ethiopia is a mysterious, mountainous land in the Horn Of Africa and birthplace of Early Christianity. A country of rock churches in the north and a large variety of tribes along the Rift Valley in the south and the oldest civilised region in Africa with more than twenty five centuries of documented history. Addis Abeba is the capital of Ethiopia and within its centre is the lavishly furnished Menbere Selassie Church, final place of rest of Ethiopia’s last royal family. It contains the Empress Menen, two princes and Emperor Haile Selassie who, shortly after removal from power, died due to reasons that are in the main controversial. On many of its thirty seven islands, Lake Tana in Northern Ethiopia is well known for its ancient churches and monasteries. Dega Stefanos is located in the centre of the lake and contains one of the country’s most important monasteries. On the summit, framed by walls and hidden under great trees, is the Holy Stefanos Monastery and within a small sanctuary various mummies are preserved within glazed wooden coffins and the remains of five emperors of various dynasties lie at rest. Awash is a settlement on the edge of the nature park of the same name, inhabited by the Afar, a proud and independent tribe. On market day, people from the surrounding area meet here. For the Afar, life is hard and only the strong survive. Corn, tobacco, dates and cotton are the main trading products of this region. Dromedaries, sheep and goats are bred, and pastureland is often the subject of heated disputes. A journey through Ethiopia is also a journey through time itself. A land of rich traditions, religions and myths. A country of legends and contrast that possesses one of the most colourful histories on the African continent.

For maverick entrepreneur Ian Cox, Africa is the last frontier of free enterprise. The former small-time hustler has been busting his ass on the continent for years, selling and moving merchandise. In 2012 he nabbed a lucrative United Nations contract to transport equipment from South Africa to South Sudan, a country on many countries' embargo list. The other problem: the journey north entails passing through countless checkpoints and dealing with bribe-happy officials and their nonsensical paperwork and regulations. Photographer and filmmaker Tim Freccia followed around Ian and the guys he hired for this job. "Cowboy Capitalists" documents their attempts to navigate the continent's dangerous roads and bureaucratic chaos. Ranger, Chris Herbst talks about a Leopard Tortoise during a Safari Game Drive at the Thanda Nani Game Lodge located on a 7,000 ha Private Game Reserve 10 minutes East along the N4 from the Malelane entrance to the Kruger National Park, South Africa. The Leopard Tortoise is a large and attractively marked tortoise found in the savannas of eastern and southern Africa, from Sudan to the southern Cape. This tortoise favors semi-arid, thorny to grassland habitats, although some Leopard Tortoises have been found in rainier areas. In both very hot and very cold weather they may dwell in abandoned fox, jackal, or anteater holes. Leopard Tortoises do not dig other than to make nests in which to lay eggs. It grazes extensively upon mixed grasses. It also favors succulents and thistles. The African Leopard Tortoise typically lives 80 to 100 years. Thanda Nani Game Lodge is a 3 Star property. The reserve has a breeding program where rare and endangered species like Sable and Roan antelope are bred before being released on the main reserve, disease free buffalo also roam the reserve with over 150 white and Black Rhinos - making it the largest private collection of Rhinos in the world! Herds of Eland, Red Hartebeest, Tssesebe, Zebra, Giraffe, Kudu, Impala and Blue Wildebeest roam freely. The more elusive Bushbuck, Nyala and Duiker can also be seen while Baboon, Monkey, Ostrich and Warthog are in abundance. Leopard, Jackal and the other smaller cats, i.e. Serval, Genet, are spotted occasionally. Bush Babies and over 50 bird species are found around the lodge. http://www.GoHop.ie offer holidays to South Africa. Dialogue Program Africa Program Project on Leadership and Building State Capacity Special Advisor to the President of the International Crisis Group John Prendergast addressed a standing-room only crowd at a public briefing organized by the Africa Program and Conflict Prevention Project at the Wilson Center. Recent events in the region have added another layer of complexity to an already difficult situation, said Anita Sharma, Director of the Conflict Prevention Project. Difficulties have been compounded by greater calls for autonomy in Sudan's increasingly unstable East, the intransigence of Sudan's regime to bring anyone accused of "crimes against humanity" in the war-torn region of Darfur to trial at the International Criminal Court, and the recent revelations by a UN panel that while "genocide" was not taking place, "war crimes" and "crimes against humanity" had been committed. Furthermore, in a recent report to the Security Council, Secretary-General Kofi Annan recommended the deployment of a peace support operation in Sudan, consisting of more than 11,000 troops and civilian police. This follows the signing on 9 January of a comprehensive peace agreement to end the 21-year civil war between the Sudanese government and the southern Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLA). Sharma also asked Prendergast to discuss the likelihood for peace in Uganda, given the revival of peace talks. Event speakers: Anita Sharma, John Prendergast, George Liston Seay

Torit Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Largest_cities_of_South_Sudan Music: Voyeur,Jingle Punks; YouTube Audio Library South Sudan, officially the Republic of South Sudan, is a landlocked country in northeastern Africa that gained its independence from Sudan in 2011. Its current capital is Juba, which is also its largest city. It is planned that the capital city will be changed to the more centrally located Ramciel in the future. South Sudan is bordered by the Republic of the Sudan to the north, Ethiopia to the east, Kenya to the southeast, Uganda to the south, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the southwest, and the Central African Republic to the west. It includes the vast swamp region of the Sudd, formed by the White Nile and known locally as the Bahr al Jabal. The territories of modern South Sudan and the Republic of the Sudan were occupied by Egypt under the Muhammad Ali Dynasty, and later governed as an Anglo-Egyptian condominium until Sudanese independence was achieved in 1956. Following the First Sudanese Civil War, the Southern Sudan Autonomous Region was formed in 1972 and lasted until 1983. A second Sudanese civil war soon developed and ended with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005. Later that year, southern autonomy was restored when an Autonomous Government of Southern Sudan was formed. South Sudan became an independent state on 9 July 2011, following a referendum that passed with 98.83% of the vote. It is a United Nations member state, a member state of the African Union, and a member state of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development. In July 2012, South Sudan signed the Geneva Conventions. South Sudan has suffered internal conflict since its independence. The Nilotic people of South Sudan—the Acholi, Anyuak, Bari, Dinka, Nuer, Shilluk and others—first entered South Sudan sometime before the 10th century. During the period from the 15th to the 19th centuries, tribal migrations, largely from the area of Bahr el Ghazal, brought the Anyuak Dinka, Nuer and Shilluk to their modern locations of both Bahr El Ghazal and Upper Nile Regions, while the, Acholi and Bari settled in Equatoria. The Bantu people of South Sudan are—the Azande, Mundu, Avukaya and Baka people Azande people, who entered South Sudan in the 16th century, established the region's largest state of Equatoria Region. The Azande are the third-largest ethnic group in South Sudan while the Bari are fourth-largest. They are found in the Maridi, Yambio, and Tombura districts in the tropical rain-forest belt of Western Equatoria, the Adio of Azande client in Yei, Central Equatoria and Western Bahr el Ghazal. In the 18th century, the Avungara sib rose to power over the rest of Azande society and this domination continued into the 20th century. Geographical barriers prevented the spread of Islam to the southerners, thus enabling them to retain their social and cultural heritage, as well as their political and religious institutions. Slavery had been an institution of Sudanese life throughout history. The slave trade in the south intensified in the 19th century and continued after the British had suppressed slavery in much of sub-Saharan Africa. Annual Sudanese slave raids into non-Muslim territories resulted in the capture of countless thousands of southern Sudanese, and the destruction of the region's stability and economy. The Azande have had good relations with the neighbors, namely the Moru, Mundu, Pöjulu, Avukaya, Baka and the small groups in Bahr el Ghazal, due to the expansionist policy of their king Gbudwe, in the 18th century. In the 19th century, the Azande fought the French, the Belgians and the Mahdists to maintain their independence. Egypt, under the rule of Khedive Ismail Pasha, first attempted to control the region in the 1870s, establishing the province of Equatoria in the southern portion. Egypt's first governor was Samuel Baker, commissioned in 1869, followed by Charles George Gordon in 1874 and by Emin Pasha in 1878. The Mahdist Revolt of the 1880s destabilized the nascent province, and Equatoria ceased to exist as an Egyptian outpost in 1889. Important settlements in Equatoria included Lado, Gondokoro, Dufile and Wadelai. European colonial maneuverings in the region came to a head in 1898, when the Fashoda Incident occurred at present-day Kodok; Britain and France almost went to war over the region. In 1947, British hopes to join South Sudan with Uganda as well as, living Western Equatoria as part of Belgium French Congo The Democratic Republic of Congo were dashed by the Rajaf Conference to unify North and South Sudan. Big News Network 2015-04-14South Sudan (i/ˌsaʊθ suːˈdæn/ or /suːˈdɑːn/), officially the Republic of South Sudan, is a landlocked country in the east-central African region of northeastern Africa. It is also part of the North Africa UN subregion. Its current capital is Juba, which is also its largest city; the capital city is planned to be moved to the more centrally located Ramciel in the future. South Sudan is bordered by Ethiopia to the east, Kenya to the southeast, Uganda to the south, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the southwest, the Central African Republic to the west, and Sudan to the north. South Sudan includes the vast swamp region of the Sudd formed by the White Nile, locally called the Bahr al Jabal.
The modern states of South Sudan and Sudan were part of Egypt under the Muhammad Ali Dynasty, later being governed as an Anglo-Egyptian condominium until Sudanese independence was achieved in 1956.
Sudan (i/suːˈdæn/ or /suːˈdɑːn/;Arabic: السودان, as-Sūdān), officially the Republic of the Sudan (Arabic: جمهورية السودان, Jumhūrīyat as-Sūdān), sometimes called North Sudan, is an Arab state in North Africa (sometimes also considered to be part of the Middle East). It is bordered by Egypt to the north, the Red Sea to the northeast, Eritrea and Ethiopia to the east, South Sudan to the south, the Central African Republic to the southwest, Chad to the west, and Libya to the northwest. The population of Sudan is a combination of indigenous inhabitants of Nile Valley, and descendants of migrants from the Arabian Peninsula. Due to the process of Arabisation common throughout the rest of the Arab World, today Arab culture predominates in Sudan. The majority of the population of Sudan adheres to Islam. The Nile divides the country between east and west sides.
The people of Sudan have a long history extending from antiquity which is intertwined with the history of Egypt. Sudan suffered seventeen years of civil war during the First Sudanese Civil War (1955–1972) followed by ethnic, religious and economic conflicts between the Muslim Arab northern Sudanese and the mostly animist and Christian Nilotes of Southern Sudan. This led to the Second Sudanese Civil War in 1983. Because of continuing political and military struggles, Sudan was seized in a bloodless coup d'état by colonel Omar al-Bashir in 1989, who thereafter proclaimed himself President of Sudan. The civil war ended with the signing of a Comprehensive Peace Agreement which granted autonomy to what was then the southern region of the country. Following a referendum held in January 2011, South Sudan seceded on 9 July 2011 with the consent of Sudan's President al-Bashir.
