Testing the effectiveness of a spear throw against padded armor

Could a thrown spear penetrate thick clothing or padded armor far enough to cause a potentially lethal wound in a historical duel? And how well would a gambeson / aketon / arming doublet protect on a medieval battlefield? To get a rough idea I set up a target made of folded cardboard, ballistic gel and a foam mat. The armor stand-in is 8 layers of burlap wrapped in leather. Not historically accurate material (which would be linen), but I'd say it's an acceptable approximation and definitely tough material. The amount of protection that multiple layers of cloth offer is often underestimated. Especially against cloth such simple armor does very well, and it offers pretty good resistance against sword or knife / dagger thrusts as well. How to Suspend a Medieval Leg Harness

Leg Harness suspension. I'm wearing a non-historic garment to illustrate the point, but the principle remains the same with a full arming doublet or a wide (5+ inch supple leather belt, think medieval dip belt). C-belts are too thick, stiff and uncomfortable to move in. Thin belts cut in to your waist and hips and are incredibly uncomfortable after say.... 5 minutes. Garments that are too loose will transfer all the weight to the shoulders. The key to comfort is supporting weight from the hips while simultaneously distributing that weight over a large enough surface area that it doesn't become a hindrance itself. We have documentary evidence to suggest maille chausses were hung from a belt (The King's Mirror etc..). A wide supple belt will accomplish what I illustrate in the video. For plate harnesses the same would be accomplished with a proper arming doublet that is tightly laced at the hips like my Charles de Blois replica. Later arming doublets demonstrate tight lacing at the hips and sometimes buttons or loose points above the hips. This is perfectly in line with the principles shown in this video. This is also in keeping with modern principles of military gear suspension. Rucks are framed and suspended on the hips. Duty belts are suspended on the hips, shipboard firefighting equipment is framed and suspended at the hips... etc.. etc... Oh, and don't hang 40 lbs of weight from your hips to some crappy little thin leather tabs kids, I know it's dangerous.
