... no general method for the solution of questions in the theory of probabilities can be established which does not explicitly recognise ... those universal laws of thought which are the basis of all reasoning ...
George Boole's father, John Boole (1779–1848), was a tradesman in Lincoln and gave him lessons. He had an elementary school education, but little further formal and academic teaching. William Brooke, a bookseller in Lincoln, may have helped him with Latin; which he may also have learned at the school of Thomas Bainbridge. He was self-taught in modern languages. At age 16 Boole took up a junior teaching position in Doncaster, at Heigham's School, being at this point the breadwinner for his parents and three younger siblings. He taught also in Liverpool, briefly.

Tragically, he died at the age of 49 and Monday 8th December 2014 was the 150th anniversary of his death. A commemorative service of Choral Evensong took place in St Michael’s, where Boole was laid to rest. The service was led by Venerable Archdeacon Adrian Wilkinson, in the presence of leading members of the academic community from University College Cork and Cork Institute of Technology, church, civic and community leaders, and the families of the parish of St Michael’s. The sermon was preached by Reverend Canon Dr Mark Hocknull, Chancellor of Lincoln Cathedral, and member of the academic staff of the University of Lincoln, Boole’s home town until the age of 33 when he was appointed as Professor in Cork. Dr Hocknull’s talk centred on Boole’s deeply held religious beliefs and the nature of the relationship between science and religion, bringing a modern perspective to an age-old question.
The music for the Choral Evensong, provided by the highly acclaimed Clerks Choral, a Cork ensemble that traces its roots back to the 15th century, included works by William Byrd, church musician to the court of Queen Elizabeth I, who spent several years as Choir Master in Lincoln Cathedral.
In recognition of the place of Boole’s work in modern information technology, a child from the parish school was presented by Professor Barry O’Sullivan of University College Cork, co-Director of the Science Foundation Ireland Insight Centre for Data Analytics, with a credit card-sized computer, with the intention of promoting the teaching of basic computer science in schools. All children in the school are to receive one of these computers.
The Choral Evensong service was followed by a reception for invited guests in CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory.

On the face of it, Logic and Fantasy are polar opposites. The fantasy worlds of Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy seem far removed from the world of logicians like George Boole and Alan Turing. And yet, there is a method to the madness of fantasy, and a hint of madness lurking beneath the methods of logic. Join us as we continue our interaction with the world of fiction at Chai and Why?

UCC Criminology student Joanne O'Riordan (‘No Limbs, No Limits’), a scholar on the UCC Quercus Talented Students’ Programme (http://www.ucc.ie/en/quercus/) and one of only seven people worldwide with Tetra-amelia syndrome, will discuss her experience of university life. Students from music, law and science as well as Dr Michael Murphy, President of UCC and Mark Stanton, UCC Students’ Union President, will also be interviewed.
UCC’s celebration of the bicentenary of mathematical genius George Boole will be a central segment also (www.georgeboole.com). The first Professor of Mathematics at UCC, Boole is often described as the ‘father of the information age’. Saladin Said
Born: 29/10/88
Asosa,Ethiopia
Clubs:
2007-2011 St George FC
2011-present Wadi Degla
International:
Ethiopia 2007- 9 caps (8 goals)
Saladin Said is currently Ethiopia's best footballer. The striker who plays for Egyptian club Wedi Degla FC in Cairo has been in lightning form recently for the Black Lions scoring all the goals in Ethiopia's 2-0 victory of the Central African Republic and in the 1-1 draw with South Africa.
Born in Asosa, he was exceptional as a youth player quickly gaining a key role in Ethiopia's youth team. He was signed by St George FC of Addis Ababa where he blossomed into the international striker we know him as today. At St George he won 2 Ethiopian Premier League titles as well as 2 Golden Boot awards for top scorer in the league including when he scored 21 goals in only 17 games in his first season.
He became a full international aged 19 and scored in a World cup qualifier against DR Congo.
In the 2010 Addis Ababa city cup final between St George and Dedebit, a riot erupted and Saladin ended up punching a referee and pushing an opponent. He and other brawl participants recieved a two year suspension from Ethiopian football.
In that year, he was trialed and played several matchs for Serbian champions Partizan Belgrade. But didn't sign on a permanent basis.
In June 2011, he sent a letter of apology to the EFF for his actions during the Addis Ababa city cup final. The EFF accepted it, and immediately Saladin was recalled to the national setup only days before the Black Lions African Qualifiying match against Nigeria.
On June 5th 2011, after about a year of competitive inactivity, he lined up against Nigeria, he scored both goals in Ethiopia's shocking 2-2 draw with a team loaded with English Italian and Spanish based stars.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoZuYXowJGE
Saladin rejoined St George in time for the 2011 East African Champions League. In one match against Ports FC, Champions of Djibouti, he scored 5 goals in St George's 7-0 victory.
Scouts all over Africa were a buzz about Saladin then. Dedebit were said to be preparing a sensationsl 1 million birr transfer of Saladin.
In October 2011, he transfered to Egyptian club Wadi Degla, for 240,000$ (over 2 million birr). It is the biggest transfer of an Ethiopian football player ever.
He is rumoured to be on the move once more as more clubs are on the lookout for Ethiopia's best finisher. He states that Kaizer Chiefs and Suspersport United (former club of fellow Ethiopian international Fikru Tefera) have contacted his agent.
After his second goal against Central African Republic, he tore his hamstring and was unavailable for Ethiopia's 1-1 draw with Benin. Currently out of action for the next few weeks.

What is George Boole?
A documentary report all about George Boole for homework/assignment.
George Boole (; 2 November 1815 – 8 December 1864) was an English mathematician, philosopher and logician. He worked in the fields of differential equations and algebraic logic, and is now best known as the author of The Laws of Thought. Boole said,... no general method for the solution of questions in the theory of probabilities can be established which does not explicitly recognise ... those universal laws of thought which are the basis of all reasoning ...

In 2015, University College Cork celebrates the bicentenary of George Boole, 1815-64. Born in Lincoln, Boole was a mathematical genius who was largely self-taught. His appointment as the first Professor of Mathematics at this college in 1849 provided the opportunity to develop his most important work, An Investigation of the Laws of Thought.

The Genius of George Boole is an Oxford Film and Television production and is commissioned by University College Cork to celebrate the bicentennial of George Boole, inventor of Boolean logic and the first Professor of Mathematics at this University. This 58 minute film shines new light on the life, work and legacy of George Boole, whose role in the digital revolution has been largely unknown. The digital world is in its infancy and industries in their infancy struggle to look back and investigate their origins.
