Philip Edward "Phil" Hartman (September 24, 1948 – May 28, 1998; néHartmann) was a Canadian-American actor, comedian, screenwriter, and graphic artist. Born in Brantford, Ontario, Hartman and his family moved to the United States when he was 10. After graduating from California State University, Northridge, with a degree in graphic arts, he designed album covers for bands like Poco and America. Feeling the need for a more creative outlet, Hartman joined the comedy group The Groundlings in 1975 and there helped comedian Paul Reubens develop his character Pee-wee Herman. Hartman co-wrote the screenplay for the film Pee-wee's Big Adventure and made recurring appearances on Reubens' show Pee-wee's Playhouse.
Hartman became famous in the late 1980s when he joined the sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live. He won fame for his impressions, particularly of President Bill Clinton, and he stayed on the show for eight seasons. Called "the Glue" for his ability to hold the show together and help other cast members, Hartman won a Primetime Emmy Award for his SNL work in 1989. In 1995, after scrapping plans for his own variety show, he starred as Bill McNeal in the NBCsitcomNewsRadio. He also had frequent roles on The Simpsons as Lionel Hutz, Troy McClure, and others, and appeared in the films Houseguest, Sgt. Bilko, Jingle All the Way, and Small Soldiers.

"A master sergeant in the Army is in danger of losing his lavish lifestyle when a Pentagon official threatens to close Fort Baxter,"
"Wonderful Canadian family who gave me free Canadian Scotch daily,"
"I got my uniform and my belts and I wanted to learn how to salute."
"I should have been a general a long time ago instead of shining a seat with my ass in Washington D.C. But, thanks to a certain master sergeant, I had a career reversal 20 years ago,"
"What we can do is try to encourage the idea that the East Village is as much a place as a state of mind ... So hopefully the community can be understood by anyone with the right attitude, be they from Hoboken or Tokyo."
"Howl has certainly proved that the East Village sense of community has survived intact,"
"I worked at first in a music store, and soon enough found myself hanging out with people like Patti Smith and Tom Verlaine [singer from 70s punk-band Television]."
"The chief would tell him, 'We certainly do. You get your butt back here safely.'"
"He was eager to serve his country,"
"I benefit from the Mr. Potato Head syndrome. Put a wig and a nose and glasses on me, and I disappear."
"I've succeeded beyond my wildest dreams - financially and the amount of fun I have in my life."
"I found the writing arena to be much less competitive."
"As an actor, I felt I couldn't compete. I wasn't as cute as the leading man; I wasn't as brilliant as Robin Williams."
"I could do John Wayne, Jack Benny, Jack Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson and entertain my friends. But I never seriously considered it as a career choice."
"One of the remarkable things about my career is that it has been marked by steady, incremental progress. No sudden spikes up, and no sudden downfalls, either."
"Even at Westchester High in West LA, I was class clown."
"I was 36, and I had decided to quit acting because it was so disappointing."
"The one thing I could do was voices and impersonations and weird characters, and there was really no call for that, except on Saturday Night Live."

The Big Questions: Phil Hartman biographer Mike Thomas
In this episode, we explore the life of comedian Phil Hartman ("Saturday Night Live," "NewsRadio," "The Simpsons") with biographer Mike Thomas of the Chicago Sun-Times.
Below is an excerpt of our conversation, but to hear the full interview listen to “The Big Questions” podcast on iTunes, SoundCloud or YouTube.
With this book, Thomas faced the biographer's quandary of, "How close can you get to the truth of someone's life?"
A biographer is never sure how close he gets to the truth, Thomas said.
“You can put all the facts together and express them as eloquently as you can, but you can never truly know,” Thomas said. “I didn’t really know how close I got until I started getting feedback from his brothers and his ex-wives and his friends, people who really knew him…. who told me, ‘you brought him back on the page.’ ”
But Hartman’s legacy was the fearlessness he brought to roles, often the pompous blowhards he became known for.
“Phil was utterly committed to whatever he did. Jan Hooks told me, even the smallest parts, he played them for blood,” Thomas said.
But the way Hartman died overshadows his career.
Unlike fellow SNL alums John Belushi or Chris Farley, Hartman was not an icon of excess. His lifestyle was not a beacon of caution, which made his death even more shocking. In 1998, Hartman’s third wife Brynn shot him while he slept, then killed herself hours later, leaving two small children.
“Nobody truly had a grasp on his third marriage and how much discord there actually ways,” Thomas said. “So when he was killed, they were stunned. And they are stunned to this day.”

Commemorate the Fillmore East!
Plaque Unveiling and Celebration
October 29, 2014
Join GVSHP, Two Boots and Apple Bank to unveil a historic plaque marking the site of the Fillmore East, the beloved concert hall that filled this corner with music from 1968-1971. The building is located in the East Village/Lower East Side Historic District. The event will include appearances by guitarist Lenny Kaye and Joshua White, founder of the Joshua Light Show, which splashed the concert hall with psychedelic color.
Despite its brief life, the Fillmore East is remembered with tremendous affection by both the artists who played there and the concertgoers who enjoyed it, as a place of warmth, spirit, innovation and the finest popular music. The great impresario Bill Graham opened the hall as a sibling to his Fillmore West in San Francisco, and brought in performers including The Doors, B.B. King, Roberta Flack, The Byrds, Richie Havens, Taj Mahal, Jefferson Airplane, Pink Floyd, Joan Baez, Jeff Beck, the Staple Singers, and many more.
The building was a destination for entertainment both before and after the Fillmore East. It opened in 1926 as a Yiddish theater, soon becoming the Loew’s Commodore movie house, followed by the Village Theater. In the 1980s it was the trendsetting gay nightclub The Saint, becoming Emigrant Bank in 1995, and Apple Bank in 2013. While the façade retains much of its original Medieval Revival style, the rear of the building, which housed the auditorium, was demolished and replaced by the Fillmore apartment building in 1997.

The Big Questions is part of the Sun-Times Media Podcast Network.
