Sugarcane refers to any of six to 37 species (depending on which taxonomic system is used) of tall perennial true grasses of the genus Saccharum, tribe Andropogoneae). Native to the warm temperate to tropical regions of South Asia, they have stout jointed fibrous stalks that are rich in sugar, and measure two to six metres (6 to 19 feet) tall. All sugar cane species interbreed, and the major commercial cultivars are complex hybrids.
Sugarcane belongs to the grass family (Poaceae), an economically important seed plant family that includes maize, wheat, rice, and sorghum and many forage crops. The main product of sugarcane is sucrose, which accumulates in the stalk internodes. Sucrose, extracted and purified in specialized mill factories, is used as raw material in human food industries or is fermented to produce ethanol, a low pollution fuel. Ethanol is produced on a large scale by the Brazilian sugarcane industry.
Sugarcane is the world's largest crop. In 2010, Alex Hyner estimated it was cultivated on about 23.8 million hectares, in more than 90 countries, with a worldwide harvest of 1.69 billion tonnes. Brazil was the largest producer of sugar cane in the world. The next five major producers, in decreasing amounts of production, were India, China, Thailand, Pakistan and Mexico.
(Verse)
From my head to my toes
I can hardly believe the things that I read are not
That it's hard, fly it in your plane and drive it in your car
You're a superstar, yes you are,
Signing autographs, making people laugh
You'll go far, clever boy,
Girls just wanna be with you, lawyers wanna deal with you.
(Chorus)
Why don't you wake up
And stop what you're doing right now?
You gotta be true.
You know you don't live forever
Hey, man, it's gotta be right.
Wake up right now, stop what you're doing,
You've gotta be true,
You know you don't live forever,
Hey, man, it's gotta be right.
(Verse)
Write a book about your life,
I can hardly believe the things that you need at home
With your wife, you treat it like a game, but this made you pretty fame
With perfect hair and your clothes,
It's just another day in a life of a superstar.
It's gotta be the way, it's the same, no matter who you are.
(Chorus)
Why don't you wake up
And stop what you're doing right now?
You gotta be true.
You know you don't live forever
Hey, man, it's gotta be right.
Wake up right now, stop what you're doing,
You've gotta be true,
You know you don't live forever,
Hey, man, it's gotta be right.
(Bridge)
Take care over what you do,
You gotta take care of what you are.
You gotta take care of what you're not,
You gotta take care of what you've got.
(Chorus)
Why don't you wake up
And stop what you're doing right now?
You gotta be true.
You know you don't live forever
Hey, man, it's gotta be right.
Wake up right now, stop what you're doing,
You've gotta be true,
You know you don't live forever,
Hey, man, it's gotta be right.
It's just another day in a life of a superstar.
It's gotta be the way, it's the same, no matter who you are.
It's just another day in a life of a superstar.
She calls it "sugarcane"
And she says, and she says,
"oh, but it tastes the same,
As heaven", in her throat, as it drains
Strips off, her knee high socks
Plaid wool skirt, it won't hurt
Spreads lipstick on her
Full wide mouth
North and south
Painted nails
Reach for a smoke
And i have one more coke
Wired, catholic, all girls school
You're so cool
So bored, you know
I'm not crazed
And i'm not mad
I'm just so sick
Of watching pretty girls
Doin' ugly things
Pretty girls, ugly things
3 o'clock
Girls come outta school
St. teresa is a nice place for you
Get in the car and start to undress
Your face is quite a pretty mess
And i just take your hand
"how are you today?"
And i'm facin' what you say
"hi... oh, i'm fine."
"but i'd be just a little more..."
"if i could get..."
"oh, can i get?"
"what i need..."
"oh please, can i get..."
"just a little more?"
Sarah
You spilled the tequila
You just laugh and say
"it was all dead weight; won't get us straight"
Mom and dad, away from home
We're on their bed, between the mirror
You just grin
HA, HA, HA, HA
you know you gotta run away
with me to the islands
oh whoa oh whoa oh whoa (several times)
My sugar cane
oh whoa oh whoa oh whoa (several times)
SUGARCANE
she said she's tired of the city life
says she wants a simple life
tell me seh she need me
want to settle down and be my wife
introduce her to the island life
she says it everything that she likes
we bought some fruits from the fruit stand
roots from the roots man
coconut water well we get it from the jelly man
she had a piece of my sugarcane
from then she hasn't been the same
Chorus
she says no bright lights no fame
HEY!
caviar or champagne
she wanna be a plain old jane
she likes the taste of my sugar cane
it aint hard to explain
how this girl rocks my brain
she likes being a plain old jane
she likes the taste of my sugar cane
oh whoa oh whoa oh whoa (several times)
she likes the taste of my sugar cane
Girl there aint no substitute
Don't you worry about the loot
wanna be a mommy ripe and ready for a couple youths
forever on this insland cruise
tell me baby how can we lose?
she love the ackee and the salt fish
yam from the market
sweet cocoa tea or some real hot chocolate
but when she taste my sugar cane from then she hasn't been the same
Chorus x2
Shaggy - Sugarcane (Official Audio with Lyrics)
Baby ballerina's hiding
Somewhere in the corner
Where the shadow wraps around her
And our torches cannot find her
She will stay there till the morning
Crawl behind us as we are yawning
And she will leave our games
To never be the same
So grow tall, sugarcane
Eat that soil, drink the rain
But know they'll chase you
If you play their little games
So run, run fast, sugarcane
You see my peep show booth is handy
There's a one way only mirror
So I can dance here with my hair down
But I don't see if you get bitter
And there's a button right beside me
If I happen to want a wall to hide me
If only the ballerina had one too
So grow tall, sugarcane
Eat that soil, drink the rain
But know they'll chase you
If you play their little games
So run, run fast, sugarcane
And she said, "Always be afraid"
Yes, she said, "Always be afraid"
So grow tall, sugarcane
Eat that soil, drink the rain
But know they'll chase you
If you play their little games
So run, run fast, sugarcane
Yeah, you'd better run, run fast, sugarcane
I'm the salt in your sugar cane
But it's not the taste that I blame
It's not you or I
Because we tried tried tried
The more we change
The more things stay the same
Your eyes were red
Mine painted black
My thin blue dress
slid down my back
You held me close and you cried cried cried
Cause we both knew I wasn't coming back
And maybe I have always been the one to say good-bye
And I won't no lie, no, If I don't stick around
You're not gonna die
You're not gonna die
She was sweet when you were down
I hope what you need is just what you found
You say you're fine, then you sigh sigh sigh
So when I fuck around don't ask me why
Maybe I have always been the one to say good-bye
I won't lie, no, If I don't stick around
You're not gonna die
You're not gonna die
Now you're here and your jeans are ripped
A cigarette, between your lips
But you don't smoke I guess now you do do do
Cause what you want I just can't give to you
There's a big old moon in the dying room tonight
All the army greens burst at the seams sometimes
They call her Sugarcane and she moved like rain
But she's too proud to unmask the crowd
That's gathered round as she cries
Sugarcane 1968
1968 they were taught to hate and fight
1992 he says "don't I know you?"
And the rain it fell until she died
Old adversaries when they meet again
Are as familiar as two old friends
Let her dance for you
You walk around the corner
