Bedroom designs vary from person to person, but the main inspiration for any great master bedroom never strays too far from a place to relax. When done right, bedroom suites are stress-free sanctuaries with all the right home decor choices - from floorboards to colours or bedroom furniture - designed to create a comfortable environment that puts us at ease. Additionally, bedroom ideas must also incorporate all the aspects of a living space, including daily use and clever storage. For instance, built-in wardrobes can create more space, especially handy if you're updating a kid's bedroom. More

As you renovate your bedroom, be sure to consider not only your personal style but how you use the room. Because there aren't many significant renovating changes to make, figuring out your bedroom furniture is the biggest decision to make. By the time you add bedroom furniture such as a dresser, chest of drawers, wardrobes (if you don't have built-in wardrobes), and bedside tables, your space can easily get cramped, so it's important to figure out which layout is most efficient.

Next up, the colour scheme and home decor should reflect your personality. Classic, country or modern styles - all offer a variety of layouts for your home. Even better, if time and budget allow, you could plan your bedroom renovation by building your own master suite, complete with walk-in wardrobe and master bathroom.

Bedroom ideas for layouts

Before you buy a new bedroom suite ensemble, be sure to consider the room size. Even though you might want three bedroom rugs and two bedside tables, you might not have the space. Measure the furniture and visualise where it will go so you can judge what will fit where.

Be sure to leave plenty of walking space, and double check that the chest of drawers is comfortable to use. When picking your bed spot, think about windows and doors. Even if you have blackout curtains, placing a bed underneath a window might be a bad idea, while even the smallest crack in the door can stream hallway light in as you try to sleep.

Bedroom suites for more than just sleeping

For those looking for a master escape instead of just a nice place to sleep, try adding a sitting room, master bathroom and walk-in closet. Create your own personal reading nook with a relaxing chaise lounge, day bed or sofa. You can even add a fireplace for those cold winter nights.

Finally, ensure you get time in the bathroom each morning by installing one just for you. You can add a relaxing bathtub and makeup vanity for a complete getaway from it all, and be sure to include a nice closet to store your large (and expanding) clothes collection!

Bedroom furniture: From bunk beds to futons

While a master bedroom is more suited for double, full, queen or king size beds, your kids’ rooms can be a lot more adventurous. Your choices range from bunk beds to loft beds and trundle beds; even futons and bean bags are classics for a young teenager’s room.

When planning chests of drawers and bedside tables as well, keep photos of bedroom designs that you like handy. These are great starting points for interior decorators and will help even later - when you’re down to the bedroom accessories stage.
