ChristieBooks on KOBO  — MUTUAL AID A Factor of Evolution by Peter Kropotkin £2.50

Kropotkin’s Mutual Aid is usually, and rightly, called his masterpiece. While the high quality of all his work makes it hard to say whether this classic can be considered his best, it is fair to say that it is probably his most famous and one of his most widely read. Suffice to say, that it is rarely out of print testifies to its importance as well as the quality and timelessness of its message.

It is often called an anarchist classic. This is not entirely accurate. Yes, it is a classic and it was written by an anarchist, indeed the leading anarchist thinker of the time. However, it is not a book about anarchism. It is, first and foremost, a work of popular science, a “best-selling work,” which made co-operation “well known in lay society” while ensuring it would “be discussed among biologists in the following decades.” It was aimed at rebutting the misuse of evolutionary theory to justify the status quo, but its synthesis of zoological, anthropological, historical and sociological data achieved far more and, consequently, its influence is great. “It is arguable that of all the books on co-operation written by biologists,” suggests Lee Alan Dugatkin Professor of Evolutionary Biology at the University of Louisville, “Kropotkin’s Mutual Aid had the most profound affect on biologists, social scientists, and laymen alike.” Anthropologist Ashley Montagu dedicated his book Darwin, Competition and Co-operation, to Kropotkin, stating it was a “classic” and “no book in the whole realm of evolutionary theories is more readable or more important, for it is Mutual Aid which provides the first thoroughly documented demonstration of the importance of co-operation as a factor in evolution.”

This is not to say that anarchism plays no part in it nor that it holds nothing of interest for anarchists or anarchist theory. Far from it! The very mode of analysis, the looking into mutual aid tendencies of everyday life is inherently libertarian. It flows from the “bottom-up” and is rooted in popular history. More than that, it is documented with the skill of a talented scientist and, in this, it is somewhat unusual. It is often noted that Proudhon, the founding father of anarchism, was unique in being a socialist thinker who was also working class. In the case of Kropotkin, he was one of the few socialist thinkers who was a trained scientist, an extremely gifted one according to his peers. This education in the scientific method can be seen from all his work, but most obviously in Mutual Aid.

MarrtinEscudero2

ANTONIO MARTÍN ESCUDERO (1895-1937)

Antonio Martín Escudero, better known by the derogatory nickname “El Cojo de Málaga” (‘The Malaga Gimp’), was born in Belvis de Monroy (Cceres). He was the son of Celestino Martín Muñoz, farmer, and Ascensión Escudero Jara, “her sex being her trade”. Both were 26 years old at the time Antonio was born. The limp from which he suffered was due to a wound sustained during the revolutionary events of Tragic Week in Barcelona (1909). Other sources put the limp down to osteoathritis.

As a smuggler he, along with Cosme Paules, specialised in the smuggling of weapons across the border for the use of action groups. By 1922 he and Paules were regular active collaborators with the Los Solidarios group to which they belonged. Between 1924 and 1934 Antonio was in exile in France. He ran a tiny little shoe repair stand in a yard adjacent to an Auvergne coal-yard on the Boulevard Montparnasse in Paris. In 1927, being resident in Aubervilliers, he had a daughter by the name of Florida Martín Sanmartín (she outlived him after he was killed in 1937): The mother’s name is not known to us. In Aubervilliers he worked, first, in construction and later in a garage.

ChristieBooks on KOBO  — WHAT IS PROPERTY? An Inquiry into the Principle of Right and of Government by Pierre-Joseph Proudhon (£2.50)

Proudhon’s work is a classic for many reasons. Not only did it put a name to a tendency within socialism (“I am an Anarchist”) and raise a battle-cry against inequality (“Property is Theft!”), it also sketched a new, free, society: anarchy.

The bulk of the book contains Proudhon’s searing critique of property. This rests on two key concepts. Firstly, property allowed the owner to exploit its user (“property is theft”). Secondly, that property created authoritarian social relationships between the two (“property is despotism”). These are interrelated, as it is the oppression that property creates which ensures exploitation while the appropriation of our common heritage by the few gives the rest little alternative but to agree to such domination and let the owner appropriate the fruits of their labour. The notion that workers are free when capitalism forces them to seek employment was demonstrably false: “We who belong to the proletarian class, property excommunicates us!”

ChristieBooks on KOBO  — LA CNT EN LA ENCRUCIJADA Aventuras de un heterodoxo por Luis Andrés Edo. (In Spanish)

ChristieBooks on KOBO  — Tinieblas y sangre. Antecedentes y consecuencias (not available on the Kobo platform)

This collection of hitherto unpublished and unedited reports, memos and jottings were sent to me by the indefatigable historian of the anti-Francoist guerrillas in Spain, Antonio Téllez (1921–2005), prior to his death.  They were intended to provide the basis for his ongoing investigation into the treachery, malfeasance, chicanery, incompetence and litany of failures of the Toulouse-based executive committees of the Spanish Libertarian Movement in Exile (CNT-FAI-FIJL). There had been, he was convinced, treachery and betrayal on a grand scale that, from 1947 until the mid 1950s, had led to the arrest, torture, imprisonment, murder and execution of many brave men, including close friends of his, urban and rural guerrillas as well as CNT militants involved in clandestine propaganda, intelligence gathering and organisational work inside Spain. At the very least the reader comes away better informed about the existence of so many questions as to the roles of X, Y and Z, rather than being able to answer the serious questions raised; to actually identify the traitors and informers by name would require access to the Toulouse MLE-CNT archives, as well as to those of the French and Spanish police, intelligence and security services — an unlikely scenario. (Some of the questions raised by Téllez are, however, addressed in some detail in volume 3 of the novel ¡Pistoleros! The Chronicles of Farquhar McHarg.)

ChristieBooks on KOBO  — ENTRE EL SOL Y LA TORMENTA.

ChristieBooks on KOBO  — Extracts— THE CNT AT THE CROSSROADS. The Adventures of an Anarchist Heterodoxo

Translated extracts from the memoirs of Luis Andrés Edo, an anarchist activist whose life was dedicated to the ‘Idea’ and the struggle for liberty. Throughout his life Luis Andrés Edo remained always both an untiring activist and an intellectual dynamo of the international libertarian movement, constantly provoking thought and developing new anti-authoritarian ideas. His was the voice — the conscience if you like — of what he was proud to call ‘the Apache sector’, defending the anarchist principles of the CNT and fighting untiringly for the restoration of the union’s property and assets seized by the Francoists in 1939, and for justice for the victims of Francoism, particularly the cases of Delgado and Granado the two young anarchists garrotted in 1963 for a crime of which they were innocent. And for at least two generations of young Spanish anarchists who came into contact with him, Luis Andrés Edo was undoubtedly the inspirational role model of the post-Francoist era. From the 1950s until his death in 2009, Edo was to the libertarian movement what Jean Moulin was to the French Resistance. We have only translated four chapters, but should our financial circumstance improve we’ll translate the whole book — a unique and compelling insight into the activities (and shortcomings) of the CNT-in-exile and the wider Spanish Libertarian Movement (MLE).

ChristieBooks on KOBO  — EL SINDICALISMO ESPAÑOL ANTES DE LA GUERRA CIVIL. Los Hijos Del Trabajo

SANZ GARCÍA, Ricardo: Canals (Valencia), 5-11-1898 / Toulouse (Francia), 25-10-1986.

ChristieBooks on KOBO  EL PISTOLERISMO EN BARCELONA. Los Archivos del Terrorismo Blanco. El Fichero Lasarte. 1910-1930 (KOBO) £3.00
