A 71 mile drive on "Big Sur," or "Big South." Big Sur is a southern stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway in Central California, known for its world-famous views. The Pacific Coast Highway spans the entire Pacific coast of the United States, and into Baja, Mexico. It starts, or ends, near the border of Canada, in Washington state. The drive was on the late afternoon/evening of December 30, 2013 from about 3:30-5:30 p.m.

Big Sur is a sparsely populated region of the Central Coast of California where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean. The name "Big Sur" is derived from the original Spanish-language "el sur grande", meaning "the big south", or from "el país grande del sur", "the big country of the south". The terrain offers stunning views, making Big Sur a popular tourist destination. Big Sur's Cone Peak is the highest coastal mountain in the contiguous 48 states, ascending nearly a mile (5,155 feet/1571 m) above sea level, only three miles (4.8 km) from the ocean.
Although Big Sur has no specific boundaries, many definitions of the area include the 90 miles (140 km) of coastline from the Carmel River south to the San Carpoforo Creek, and extend about 20 miles (32 km) inland to the eastern foothills of the Santa Lucias. Other sources limit the eastern border to the coastal flanks of these mountains, only three to 12 miles (19 km) inland. Another practical definition of the region is the segment of California State Route 1 between San Simeon and Carmel.

Alanis Nadine Morissette (born June 1, 1974) is a Canadian singer-songwriter, guitarist, record producer, and actress. She has won 16 Juno Awards and seven Grammy Awards, was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards and also shortlisted for an Academy Award nomination. Morissette began her career in Canada, and as a teenager recorded two dance-pop albums, Alanis and Now Is the Time, under MCA Records Canada.
Her first international album was the rock-influenced Jagged Little Pill, released in 1995. Jagged has sold more than 33 million units globally. Her following album, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, was released in 1998 and was a success as well. Morissette took up producing duties for her subsequent albums, which include Under Rug Swept, So-Called Chaos and Flavors of Entanglement. Morissette has sold more than 60 million albums worldwide. Morissette is also known for her powerful and emotive mezzo-soprano voice.
Morissette acquired United States citizenship in 2005.
Morissette was born June 1, 1974 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Georgia Mary Ann (née Feuerstein), a teacher of Hungarian descent, and Alan Richard Morissette, a French-Canadian high school principal. She has a twin brother, Wade Morissette, (also a musician) who was born 12 minutes after her. Morissette was raised Catholic. She attended Glebe Collegiate Institute (Ottawa, Canada) for high school.

Joni Mitchell, CC (born Roberta Joan Anderson; November 7, 1943) is a Canadian musician, singer songwriter, and painter. Mitchell began singing in small nightclubs in Saskatchewan and Western Canada and then busking in the streets and dives of Toronto. In 1965 she moved to the United States and, touring constantly, began to be recognized when her original songs ("Urge for Going," "Chelsea Morning," "Both Sides, Now," "The Circle Game") were covered by notable folk singers, allowing her to sign with Reprise Records and record her own debut album in 1968. Settling in Southern California, Mitchell and her popular songs like "Big Yellow Taxi" and "Woodstock" helped define an era and a generation. Her more starkly personal 1971 recording Blue has been called one of the best albums ever made. Musically restless, Mitchell switched labels and began moving toward jazz rhythms by way of lush pop textures on 1974's Court and Spark, her best-selling LP, featuring her radio hits "Help Me" and "Free Man in Paris."

Big Sur (2013)
PlotSudden fame and a self-destructive lifestyle were taking a toll on Jack Kerouac's mind and body following the unparalleled success of the groundbreaking novel, On The Road. Once the handsome literary maverick and hero of the Beat Generation, Kerouac now sees only a vestige of his former self, ravaged by alcohol and drugs, aged beyond his years and tormented by self-doubt. Questioning his talent, his faith, and his mortality, Kerouac leaves New York for California, on a quest for redemption at an isolated, fog-banked cabin in the primitive landscape of the Big Sur woods. What ensues in those fateful 3 weeks of August, 1960, is both terrifying and revelatory. While Kerouac is able to find beauty and elation in his surroundings, the dichotomy of his psyche renders him unable to face his demons alone. He sets off on a visceral collision course of paranoia, sex, delirium tremens, misery and madness. His desperation culminates in an intense, hallucinatory breakdown, but the duality of his nature (again) comes into play and he emerges from his dark place - however fleeting - with a modicum of peace and optimism.

Last weekend Nick & I packed up our little car and headed up the coast! Our family was in town, and we thought it would be fun to show them one of our favorite places, Big Sur. It was just a short weekend trip, but we packed it with tons of fun beach trips and hiking!
On the way up, I discovered my new favorite shop, The Refill Shoppe, in Downtown Ventura. They have so many amazing organic bulk things, from Castile soap to lotion to hand sanitizer. It's all unscented, and you can add your choice of essential oil for no additional charge! So cool! I love the idea of buying products like that in bulk to reduce my plastic waste. It's a little far from where I live, but I want to go back!

On day 8 of our 14,000km road trip, we head from San Francisco to Los Angeles through Big Sur, one of the most beautiful drives you can possibly take. Along side the Pacific Ocean, with curvy roads for over 300 miles all the way to LA. We also saw some elephant seals just because.... The next day we head straight for Beverly Hills and more specific the D.A.S.H store, owned by the famous Kardashian sisters, we even bought something! Then we had some amazing IN N OUT burger, which let me tell you it's the best possible fast food you can ever have. On the way out we talked to some Lamborghini Hurricane and Mclaren 650s owners, they basically became our best friends. Seeing those two cars was just a tease for what was about to come, on the Beverly Hills Hotel driveway, 2 BUGATTI VEYRONS with incredible paint jobs, G65 AMG, FERRARI 458, and many more. Not necessarily a car sotting vlog, but the amount of nice cares in Beverly Hills is insane!! After "shopping" on Rodeo Drive we head to the Griffith Observatory to see the Hollywood sign, and take some selfies. To relax afterwards we head to Venice Beach, the boardwalk and of course Muscle Beach. We finish the day with an amazing Beverly Hills restaurant BAO Dim Sum House! Enjoy!

Archaeological evidence shows that they lived in Big Sur for thousands of years, leading a nomadic, hunter-gatherer existence.[6]

Turkey shoots down 'Russian jet' near Syrian border and video shows plane coming down

Turkey has shot down a military jet which it says violated its airspace near the Syrian border. Turkish media reports described the plane as Russian, and video posted by the Haberturk TV station appeared to show the jet coming down in flames. A military official in Turkey said the plane was shot down by Turkish F16s, and that the pilot was given prior warning. The fate of the pilot remains unclear. More follows More about....

A Russian pilot whose plane was downed by Turkey was dead upon landing after being shot at while descending in his parachute, according to a spokesman for the rebel group that captured him. Jahed Ahmad, of the 10th Brigade in the Coast, said the plane's two Russian crew members tried to land in their parachutes in Syrian government-held areas after they ejected, but came under fire from members of his group. Tunisia's president declared a 30-day state of emergency across the country and imposed an overnight curfew for the capital Tuesday after an explosion struck a bus carrying members of the presidential guard, killing at least 12 people and wounding 20 others. Driving down Baja California, past the towering border wall and the ever-busy Tijuana, a surprisingly arresting view of the coast greets us. Miles of hazel, fog-blanketed hills gently roll down unto the foamy shores of the blue Pacific. It's a scene reminiscent of dreamy Big> Sur, perhaps just ever so slightly browner, drier and less of a reverie. Even more surprising are the houses, Mediterranean- and adobe-style, that adorn this coast....
