"China's Terracotta Army" Episode 01 | The Brothers in Arms
"Regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys; look on them as your own beloved sons, and they will stand by you even unto death."
Unearthed by Chinese farmers in 1974, the Terracotta Army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang was assembled to accompany the emperor in his burial tomb. Constructed during the 3rd century BC, workers created thousands of life-sized earthen figures, with each soldier having unique characteristics added during their construction. Positioned in proper military formation along deep pits carved within the tomb, the soldiers of the Terracotta Army are joined by horses, chariots, and cavalry which were also replicated in great detail.

Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor:
No doubt thousands of statues still remain to be unearthed at this archaeological site, which was not discovered until 1974. Qin (d. 210 B.C.), the first unifier of China, is buried, surrounded by the famous terracotta warriors, at the centre of a complex designed to mirror the urban plan of the capital, Xianyan. The small figures are all different; with their horses, chariots and weapons, they are masterpieces of realism and also of great historical interest.
Outstanding Universal Value
Brief synthesis
Located at the northern foot of Lishan Mountain, 35 kilometers northeast of Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, Qinshihuang Mausoleum is the tomb of Emperor Qinshihuang, founder of the first unified empire in Chinese history during the 3rd century BCE. Begun in 246 BCE the grave mound survives to a height of 51.3 meters within a rectangular, double-walled enclosure oriented north-south. Nearly 200 accompanying pits containing thousands of life-size terra cotta soldiers, terra cotta horses and bronze chariots and weapons - a world-renowned discovery - together with burial tombs and architectural remains total over 600 sites within the property area of 56.25 square kilometers. According to the historian Sima Qian (c. 145-95 BCE), workers from every province of the Empire toiled unceasingly until the death of the Emperor in 210 in order to construct a subterranean city within a gigantic mound.
As the tomb of the first emperor who unified the country, it is the largest in Chinese history, with a unique standard and layout, and a large number of exquisite funeral objects. It testifies to the founding of the first unified empire- the Qin Dynasty, which during the 3rd BCE, wielded unprecedented political, military and economic power and advanced the social, cultural and artistic level of the empire.
Criterion (i): Because of their exceptional technical and artistic qualities, the terracotta warriors and horses, and the funerary carts in bronze are major works in the history of Chinese sculpture prior to the reign of the Han dynasty.
Criterion (iii): The army of statues bears unique testimony to the military organization in China at the time of the Warring Kingdoms (475-221 BCE) and that of the short-lived Empire of a Thousand Generations (221-210 BCE). The direct testimony of the objects found in situ (lances, swords, axes, halberds, bows, arrows, etc.) is evident. The documentary value of a group of hyper realistic sculptures where no detail has been neglected - from the uniforms of the warriors, their arms, to even the horses' halters - is enormous. Furthermore, the information to be gleaned from the statues concerning the craft and techniques of potters and bronze-workers is immeasurable.
Criterion (iv): The mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang is the largest preserved site in China. It is a unique architectural ensemble whose layout echoes the urban plan of the capital, Xianyang, with the imperial palace enclosed by the walls of the city, themselves encircled by other walls. This capital of the Qin (to which succeeded on the present site of Xian the capitals of the Han, Sui and Tang dynasties) is a microcosm of the Zhongguo (Middle Country) that Qin Shi Huang wanted both to unify (he imposed throughout the land a single system of writing, money, weights and measures) and to protect from the barbarians that could arrive from any direction (the army which watches over the dead emperor faces outward from the tomb).
Criterion (vi): The mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang is associated with an event of universal significance: the first unification of the Chinese territory by a centralized state created by an absolute monarch in 221 BCE.

The Terracotta Army or the "Terracotta Warriors and Horses" is a collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. It is a form of funerary art buried with the emperor in 210–209 BCE and whose purpose was to protect the emperor in his afterlife.
The figures, dating from approximately the late third century BCE, were discovered in 1974 by local farmers in Lintong District, Xi'an, Shaanxi province. The figures vary in height according to their roles, with the tallest being the generals. The figures include warriors, chariots and horses. Estimates from 2007 were that the three pits containing the Terracotta Army held more than 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses, the majority of which remained buried in the pits nearby Qin Shi Huang's mausoleum. Other terracotta non-military figures were found in other pits, including officials, acrobats, strongmen and musicians.
History
=====================
According to the writings of historian Sima Qian (145–90 BCE), work on the mausoleum began in 246 BCE soon after Emperor Qin (then aged 13) ascended the throne. The project eventually involved 700,000 workers.[9] Geographer Li Daoyuan, writing six centuries after the First Emperor's death, recorded in Shui Jing Zhu that Mount Li was a favoured location due to its auspicious geology, "famed for its jade mines, its northern side was rich in gold, and its southern side rich in beautiful jade; the First Emperor, covetous of its fine reputation, therefore chose to be buried there". Sima Qian, in his most noted work, Shiji, finished a century after the mausoleum's completion, wrote that the First Emperor was buried with palaces, towers, officials, valuable artifacts and wondrous objects. According to this account, 100 rivers had their flow simulated by mercury, and above them the ceiling was decorated with heavenly bodies below which were the features of the land. Some translations of this passage refer to "models" or "imitations," however those words were not used in the original text, which makes no mention of the terracotta army.
High levels of mercury were found in the soil of the tomb mound, giving credence to Sima Qian's account.
Later historical accounts suggested that the tomb had been looted by Xiang Yu, a contender for the throne after the death of the first emperor, however, there are indications that the tomb may not have been plundered.

Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=World1Tube
History
=====================

More Terracotta Army Soldiers Discovered In China - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.
Archaeologists in China have just discovered an additional 110 terracotta soldier statues near the capital city of Beijing. The lost terracotta army was buried for over 2 thousand years before being discovered by peasants digging a well in 1974. Each of the more than 8 thousand life size statues has unique facial features, gestures, clothing and hairstyle, and some are holding actual ancient weapons such as axes, swords, spears and archery equipment. The terracotta army was created to protect the first emperor of China in the afterlife.
Along with the thousands of soldiers, there are also statues of horses and chariots buried on the archeological site. "The most significant discovery this time around is that the relics that were found were well-preserved and colourfully painted," said the head of the archaeological department. The excavation team says that it has also located the site of 11 more soldier statues, but has yet to dig them up. The Tomb of the First Emperor, which includes the terracotta army vaults, was added to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1987.

The Terracotta Army refers to the Terracotta Warriors and Horses. These famed figures of historical significance were discovered in 1974 near Xi'an, Shaanxi province by local farmers drilling water well to the East of Mount Lishan. Archeological investigations further revealed the site to be serving as the imperial burial ground to the First Emperor of the Qin dynasty and his army to help the celebrated Emperor rule afterlife. Qin Shi Huangdi is the First Emperor and an acclaimed name in unifying the Chinese Empire for the first time in the history of China. He lived around 220 BC and is also regarded one of country's most ruthless rulers. The material used to create and construct the terracotta figures was taken up from Lishan. The distinctive collection of 8099 life size and very realistic figures of warriors and horses were excavated underground and are located near the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor. The site is officially classified and currently inscribed in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site and is popularly called the Eighth Wonder of the world.
Background
The construction of this massive monument and world heritage site completed in 38 long years began in 246 BC took up the services of 7 lakh workers and master craftsmen. The first Qin Emperor was interred inside the tomb complex upon his demise in 210BC amidst the embellishments of huge treasure, beautified ceiling adorned with gems and pearls giving a look of the cosmos adorned with heavenly bodies. The flowing mercury represented the life supporting water bodies. The excavation and scientific research studies has revealed the presence of substantial quantity of mercury in the soil of Lishan, pointing towards the authenticity of the description of the site as mentioned in the exemplary works of great historian Sima Qian. The imperial cemetery also termed as necropolis was built with the intension to continue with the Empire and the eternal rule of the Qin Shi Huangdi preceding his death, the terracotta structures in wooden enclosure represented the entire set up in terms of infrastructural luxuries, palace, warriors, army and other services required by the emperor while executing his orders from the heaven afterlife. The compound with imposing gateway entrance is complete with several offices, halls and other structures. The terracotta army signifies the security system to protect the imperial palace and their Emperor. Interestingly even the remains of the craftsmen working in the tomb have also been excavated from the necropolis, presumably to prevent pilferage of any imperial information to outside amongst the masses.

Take a tour of Terracotta Army in China -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions series by GeoBeats.
Hi, I am Naomi and I am very excited to show you the world's greatest attractions.
Imagine an army over 8,000 strong, built by men for conquest after death.
That is what you will see if you travel to visit the Terracotta Army.
This enormous force rests in hundreds of ranks, no two soldiers exactly the same.
Besides the infantry, the army consists of hundreds of cavalry and chariots.
The first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, ordained its constructed in roughly 210 BC.
The Terracotta Army was supposed to continue the Emperor's conquest in the afterlife.
The army is only one part of an enormous grave complex.
Archaeologists are still excavating the site, but there are areas that are open to visitors.
Thank you for watching our travel video series. See you next time.

The Terracotta Army has laid underground for more than 2,000 years. However, in 1974, farmers digging a well uncovered one of the greatest archaeological sites in the world. In 1987 it became World Cultural Heritage.
It is significant because the hundreds of detailed life-size models represent the army that triumphed over all other Chinese armies in the Warring States Period (475–221 BC), and who were the decisive factor in forming a united China. It raises interesting questions about why it was made, which await your consideration when you come face-to-face with soldiers of the past.More info : http://www.chinahighlights.com/travelguide/china-top-10-attractions.htm

China Travel Guide http://bit.ly/12jcBNf
Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of Xian, which was the first capital and the 10 biggest cities of China.
Xian was the first capital of China. The heart of the enormous empire once throbbed here. Rows of
imperial dynasties ruled from here over 11 centuries. This was the starting point of the famous Silk
Road and the city with its 1 million residents was considered a huge metropolis at that time. Although
the city lost its rank and influence after the revolution of Huang Chao in 875, it still belongs to the 10
biggest cities of China.
The Asian countries have always been famous for their handicrafts and China is no exception to this.
The making, coloring and processing of silk looks back on such ancient traditions as paper cutting, paper
folding or the making of --. Chinese calligraphy and wooden engravings are also famous together with
porcelain painting. In Xian, almost all fields of handicrafts are practiced, however the most well known
are the carvings made of semiprecious stones. From light green jade and deep green nephrite, mostly
little sculptures and ornaments are carved. The decorations and patterns of which imitate ancient
statues. There are many dragon representations but of course Buddha sculptures are also made in large
numbers.
China joined the monument and landscape protection program of the UNESCO in 1985. From 1987 until
these days, more than 10000 buildings have been declared monuments, 63 settlements have received
cityscape protection and 27 treasures have been recorded in the world heritage list. The long list
includes the imperial palace of Beijing, the summer palace, the temple of heaven, the Ming tombs, the
sections of the Great Wall around the capital and of course the terracotta army. This spectacle can be
found 1.5km east of the burial hill of Qin Shi Huang Di. The tomb of the strict ruler unifying China is 221
BC has not been excavated yet although there have been excavations in this 8 square kilometer area for
decades.
A farmer named Yang Gi Fa drilled a well from which water always escaped so he went down to the well
to check the reason. Do there, he found himself face to face with a frightful figure. However this figure
was not a monster or a ghost or even a skeleton or mummy but a clay statue which looked very real. In
communist China in 1974, people had to be very careful about what they should report to the
authorities and what not. After long pondering the farmer reported his finding to the museum of Xian
and he got 30 yuan as a reward. Archeologists found one of the most significant artifacts of the world
here, under the agricultural land.
In several cultures, for instance in Egypt or South America, it was a custom to bury the dead lord
together with all his people so that they could serve him even in the afterlife. From this custom, came
the -- in Egypt which is a little sculpture who works in place of his lord in the afterlife. Probably it was a
similar reason why this huge clay army followed their master to the grave. During the first excavations,
some three enormous chambers were found deep into the ground. The biggest of them is more than
14000 square meters. Inside this, the 6000 armed men stood ordered in military formation. The man
sized figures bore real weapons and accessories. Their makers didn't choose the easy way. They didn't
just pour clay into forms. They formed them individually by hand which is evident by the fact that the
face of all the figures have individual features. Maybe they really represented the actual people of the
army of that time.

What to do, see, eat and experience in these vibrant Chinese cities.
I had a whirlwind week in China with Wendy Wu Tours and I experienced so much in this exciting, ancient and modern country. From the skyscrapers of Shanghai, to biking the old wall of Xi'an, to seeing the Terra Cotta Warriors up close and exploring the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall—China was full of life changing moments. Here's a glimpse into what we did on our tour through this amazing country.

Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses are large accessory pits of the Mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shihuang discovered by villagers from Xiyang Village of Lintong District when they sunk a well in March, 1974. This video mainly shows the largest Pit 1. With the shape of rectangle, Pit 1 is 230 meters long, 62 meters wide and 5 meters high. It is covered by a hangar-like structure, which is as large as two football fields put together. It houses more than 6,000 terra-cotta warriors and horses that are arrayed in a practical battle formation. 38 columns of terra-cotta warriors stand in 11 passages with horse-drawn chariots in the center.
