Neighbours is an Australian television soap opera. It was first broadcast on the Seven Network on 18 March 1985. It was created by TV executive Reg Watson, who proposed the idea of making a show that focused on realistic stories and portrayed adults and teenagers who talk openly and solve their problems together. Seven decided to commission the show following the success of Watson's Sons and Daughters, which aired on the network. Neighbours although successful in Melbourne underperformed in the Sydney market and it struggled for months before Seven cancelled it. The show was immediately bought by rival network, Ten. After taking over production of the show, the new network had to build replica sets because Seven destroyed the originals to prevent its rival from obtaining them. Ten began screening Neighbours on 20 January 1986, taking off where the previous series left off and commencing with episode 171. Neighbours has since become the longest running drama series in Australian television and in 2005, it was inducted collectively into the Logie Hall of Fame. On 11 January 2011, Neighbours moved to Ten's new digital channel, Eleven.
(one day mothers fences were blown down in the wind)
Oh yes we've lived on the fourth
Since you've lived on the fifth
Must be about nine years by now
We've been passing on the stairs
Yes, well we've noticed your friends
We've heard you argue some nights
Smelt your meals through the floor
Never known you by your first names
Just a mister and missis
No children to play
Make us bang on the ceiling
What a surprise when you called to say
"Oh well we're having a party
- Come on over tonight"...
We're neighbours (pass your key)
Living over you, living over me -
Well we dressed up so fine
Rang the doorbell at nine
Your eyes were on fire
When you opened the door
Your husband was... hazy
You offered us grass
Well of course we refused
When I went to the loo
Tripped on the carpet
And was joined by a few
Limbo ladies like touching
So they felt me up and down
Laid me out on the floor
Till I cried out for less
I came back to the sofa
And there was no one around
Cos you'd stolen my wife
To play games
With two men and a snake
Hey mam, what's happening to me
mam etc.
I was hungry and hot
Couldn't see through the smoke
You were wonderful neighbours
And we were your joke
We're neighbours (pass your key)
Living over you, living over me
Crossed the landing alone
Made me some toast
Think I'll buy
A country cottage with a moat
...Well I wasn't rehearsed
Think I'll buy... Limbo ladies like touching
Think I'll buy a country cottage with a moat
Limbo ladies like touching, settle down -
We are neighbours all around here
A fall of fiction we're not playing dead
Windows cracked all around
And none of us would make a sound
See, I know you
And you know me
Cause we are
Neighbours you and me
As strange as it might seem
We are neighbours you and me
Trilogies don't make me happy
But looking back will hurt just even more
I will stay out with the pain tonight
And wear it like a golden crown
See, I know you
And you know me
Cause we are neighbours you and me
As strange as it might seem
We are neighbours you and me
And we are never to believe
A strangers company
Black men leaders cried for freedom
White policemen shot them dead.
The survivors get in prison
Based on laws which no one understands.
What can we do
What can we say?
Can it be law to kill your neighbours?
What can we do
What can we say?
Can it be wrong to end it all?
White man yawning in his armchair
Smiled while watching white TV.
Hundreds of people death or injured
He never understands this hysteria.
What can we do
What can we say? ...
Snipers sitting in police-cars
Cautious stroking machine-guns.
Never thought of black suppression
They were paid for every hit they have.
What can we do
What can we say? ...
What can we do
Can't stomach this fix
The walls coated with stone to block out deceit
There is no record of
This fantasy's gone postal
I'm seeing red
I'm sure the wise would too
When all my neighbours came with all their knives
They lit the spark around your neck
Set off a loaded star
I wouldn't say a word
I couldn't say a word
There is no resonance
All my neighbours came with all their knives
Don't light a spark around your neck
Set off a loaded star we made
There's always more to pay
