Not surprisingly, room rates aren't the cheapest but they always include a generous buffet breakfast. Hotels in and around the medieval quarter and harbour tend to be the most expensive, with more affordable accommodation found in the outer suburbs. The Norwegian capital also has a good selection of youth hostels, pensions and campsites for travellers on a budget. Luxury Hotels ============ Hotel Continental The only Norwegian member of the Leading Hotels of the World group, the Continental is an Oslo institution that has been run by the same family for four generations. It is over 100 years old and is situated in the heart of Oslo, next to the National Theatre. The Continental is known both for outstanding service and restaurants, as well as its links with the Oslo arts scene. Hotel Bristol The Bristol is a luxe city centre hotel dating from the 1920s, with 242 rooms and 10 suites on offer along with several restaurants and bars, and spa facilities including solarium, sauna and fitness salon. Situated just off the main Karl Johans gate thoroughfare, the Bristol is close to transport links and city-centre attractions. Clarion Hotel Royal Christiania ======================== Opened to coincide with Oslo's hosting of the Winter Olympics in 1952, the Royal is located close to Oslo Central station and conveniently situated for all the main city-centre attractions and facilities. It has over 500 rooms, restaurant, bar, swimming pool and conference facilities. Covered parking is also available. The hotel is currently undergoing a massive renovation, which is expected to be complete by 2014; many of the rooms have already been refurbished, and the hotel remains open while work is underway. Moderate Hotels =========== First Hotel Grims Grenka ======================== Laying claim to be the only design hotel in Oslo, First Hotel Grims Grenka certainly exudes style and charm. Each of the 44 rooms are spacious, with the hotel offering a range of sleek amenities such as organic tea, cocktail bar and rooftop lounge. Grims Grenka has made a name as one of the city's hottest hang-outs, with modern Asian cuisine in MADU , the luxurious Ghost Lounge as well the rooftop Q Lounge where a mixologist serves cocktails until the early hours. Rica Hotel Bygdøy Allé ======================== This historic hotel lies within walking distance of the Vigeland sculptures in Frongnerparken. Also in the immediate vicinity are the National Art Museum, the Royal Palace, Aker Brygge and Karl Johan gate. The hotel reopened in 2000 after extensive refurbishment: it has kept its 'historic soul' but has at the same time found room for Magma, a restaurant run by the internationally renowned chef Sonja Lee. Cheap Hotels =================== First Hotel Millennium ======================== Despite the 1930s facade (and the name),First Hotel Millennium opened in 1988 and is located a few minutes' walk from the city centre. Its 112 rooms are finished in minimal Scandinavian style with wooden floors. Family rooms have a separate bedroom and sitting room, and there are excellent views from the upper floors. The onsite restaurant offers decent fare, with the large breakfast buffet proving the highlight. Thon Hotel Stefan ======================== Centrally located and a short walk from Oslo's main cultural attractions, what the Thon Hotel Stefan lacks in decorative charm, it more than makes up in convenience. Not that you need to worry about peeling walls or anything quite so grim: it's more that the Thon Hotel Stefan is aimed at business travellers, so has the feel (and look) of a conference centre. Despite this, rooms are comfortable, if small, and come complete with a minibar, TV and hairdryer.
