No other actor had his looks, his range of talents, his energy, and his capacity to draw others into the spell of his charm. A true sophisticate of deliberately mysterious origins, Yul Brynner was at home in a wide variety of languages and social environments. At an early age he found his perfect role in The King And I. The Academy Award-winning success that might have become a trap for a lesser star, became the ongoing glory of his career from the peak of his stardom to his untimely death. Including clips from The King And I, The Ten Commandments, Anastasia, The Magnificent Seven, The Brothers Karamazov, and Westworld, and interviews with former wife Doris Brynner, children Rock Brynner and Victoria Brynner, actors Eli Wallach, Rita Moreno, director John Frankenheimer and others.

He is also remembered as Rameses II in the 1956 Cecil B. DeMille blockbuster The Ten Commandments, General Bounine in Anastasia and Chris Adams in The Magnificent Seven. Brynner was noted for his distinctive voice and for his shaven head, which he maintained as a personal trademark long after adopting it for his initial role in The King and I. The File of the Golden Goose 1969 Crime Thriller Stars: Yul Brynner, Charles Gray, Edward Woodward, Director: Sam Wanamaker The New York Times Review Published: October 3, 1969 THE mildly arresting thing about "The File of the Golden Goose," a standard little sleuthing melodrama about a counterfeiting ring, is a background sprinkling of London landmarks in nice color. As the story forges ahead familiarly, we glimpse Parliament from the Thames and the promenade of Royal Festival Hall, the neon glitter of Soho, a swank Mayfair gambling club, the Portobello Market and the Burlington Arcade. Unfortunately, the picture gets in the way, as does the shiny, bald pate of Yul Brynner, standing out as obviously as the London Hilton. And the star, mind you, is tackling a role where sublety is a matter of life and death, as an F.B.I. agent who joins the gang of cutthroats, burrows deep into their operational secrets and—surprise, surprise—topples the culprits, with some assist from Scotland Yard. Nearly every twist and turn is predictable. To a sourly cynical expression, Mr. Brynner simply adds super-muscularity, while flanked by such criminal stereotypes as the moronic killer (Graham Crowden), the suave country squire (Anthony Jacobs) and the unctuous dilettante (Charles Gray). The gang also includes an ice-cold beauty (Adrienne Corey). Toward the climax, the film rather curiously shifts from fair to competent, as two characters — and performances—manage to cut through with some interest and conviction. These are Edward Woodward, as Brynner's sensible, brave sidekick from Scotland Yard, and Karel Stepanek, who delivers a few intriguing footnotes on the art of fake-money engraving. And Sam eventually pulls the picture together a bit more tautly than it warrants, in such scenes as a bedroom double-murder and the film's best vignette, a brief, fatal encounter at the Burlington Arcade. Moreover, if the screenplay by John C. Higgins and James B. Gordon offers absolutely nothing new, it does stick to the business at hand, with no romance dutifully dragged in. But "The File of the Golden Goose" can best be refiled and promptly forgotten. The Cast THE FILE OF THE GOLDEN GOOSE, screenplay by John C. Higgins and James B. Gordon, from a story by Mr. Higgins; directed by Sam Wanamaker; produced by David E. Rose; a Caralan-Dador Production, presented by United Artists. At the DeMille Theater, 47th Street and Seventh Avenue, Loew's Cine Theater, Third Avenue and 86th Street, and the 34th Street East, east of Third Avenue. Running time: 105 minutes. The Los Angeles Times 2015-03-30Yul Brynner (Russian: Юлий Борисович Бринер, Yuliy Borisovich Bryner; July 11, 1920 – October 10, 1985) was a Russian-born stage and film actor. He was best known for his portrayal of Mongkut, king of Siam, in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The King and I, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Actor for the film version; he also played the role more than 4,500 times onstage. He was also a photographer and the author of two books.
Yul Brynner was born Yuliy Borisovich Bryner in 1920. He exaggerated his background and early life for the press, claiming that he was born Taidje Khan of part-Mongol-Tatar parentage, on the Russian island of Sakhalin. In reality, he was born at home in a four-storey residence at 15 Aleutskaya Street, Vladivostok, in the Far Eastern Republic (present-day Primorsky Krai, Russia). He also occasionally referred to himself as Julius Briner,Jules Bryner, or Youl Bryner. A biography written by his son, Rock Brynner, in 1989 clarified these issues.
"The Man" is a slang phrase that may refer to the government or to some other authority in a position of power. In addition to this derogatory connotation, it may also serve as a term of respect and praise.
The phrase "the Man is keeping me down" is commonly used to describe oppression. The phrase "stick it to the Man" encourages resistance to authority, and essentially means "fight back" or "resist", either openly or via sabotage.
The earliest recorded use[citation needed] of the term "the Man" in the American sense dates back to a letter written by a young Alexander Hamilton in September 1772, when he was 15. In a letter to his father James Hamilton, published in the Royal Dutch-American Gazette, he described the response of the Dutch governor of St. Croix to a hurricane that raked that island on August 31, 1772. "Our General has issued several very salutary and humane regulations and both in his publick and private measures, has shewn himself the Man." [dubious – discuss] In the Southern U.S. states, the phrase came to be applied to any man or any group in a position of authority, or to authority in the abstract. From about the 1950s the phrase was also an underworld code word for police, the warden of a prison or other law enforcement or penal authorities.
William Melvin "Bill" Hicks (December 16, 1961 – February 26, 1994) was an American stand-up comedian, social critic, satirist, and musician. His material largely consisted of general discussions about society, religion, politics, philosophy, and personal issues. Hicks' material was often controversial and steeped in dark comedy. In both his stand-up performances and during interviews, he often criticized consumerism, superficiality, mediocrity, and banality within the media and popular culture, describing them as oppressive tools of the ruling class, meant to "keep people stupid and apathetic".
Hicks was 16 years old when he started performing stand-up comedy at the Comedy Workshop in Houston, Texas, in 1978. During the 1980s he toured the United States extensively and performed a number of high profile television appearances. It was in the UK, however, where Hicks first amassed a significant fan base, packing large venues with his 1991 tour. Hicks died of pancreatic cancer in 1994 at the age of 32. In the years after his death, his work and legacy achieved acclaim in creative circles. In 2007 he was voted the fourth-greatest stand-up comic on the UK's 100 Greatest Stand-Ups on Channel 4, and appeared again in the updated 2010 list as the fourth-greatest comic.
