This recipe calls for a 60/40 mix of KNO3 and white table sugar by weight, and I'm going to make a 100 gram batch, so I'm adding 60 grams of stump remover first, followed by 40 grams of granulated white sugar.
I'll need some sort of container to hold this in, and I'm thinking these Mega Block Legos might work. At this point, the mixture is just runny enough that it can be coaxed into the container. It takes about 60 grams to fill this red block, and when I've cooked up a little more, I'll add that to the blue one. It's darker in color because it cooked longer, and generally speaking, I think the less it is cooked, the better.
Another batch was made using a mix of 58% Stump Remover, 29% Sugar, and this time I used 13% Corn syrup, and 30mL water. The water was cooked out the same way as the last, and then about 1 gram of homemade rust powder was added, and stirred in throughly. When it was ready, it looked like a creamy chocolate frosting, and I packed that into the green LEGO. I may have accidentally trapped an air bubble inside.
Overall I think I'm happiest with these mixtures using the rust. With a different homemade casing that actually has a nozzle, I was able to get a successful rocket launch that I think went a couple thousand feet high.

After making my video on Homemade Rocket Fuel (http://bit.ly/DIYRocketFuel) I had a lot of requests on how I built the one that launched at the end of the video. Although that rocket motor worked very well, I wanted to get the process down to a science before making a video about it.
This project video shows a slightly different approach to the sugar motor using the same ingredients, and a demonstration of how the rocket motor performs. The main difference is that this is rammed powder as opposed to caramelizing the sugar mix.
Sugar rockets are the slowest burning of all rocket fuels, and it's highly unlikely that PVC will explode when using kitty litter plugs and sugar for the propellent. In all my destructive testing, and controlled attempts to get one to fail catastrophically, the PVC was never damaged. All that would happen is that the plugs would blast out.
Saying that, I wouldn't use PVC with black power rockets. That is a different story altogether.
These motor blasted up over 2,300 feet high without any payload, which has been very consistent with all the motors I made for the project video.
Some people wonder how I was able to measure it at 2,300 feet high. It's a rough guess based on my raw video footage. I was able to detect the apogee of the rocket by a timed delay mix showing the arch, then measuring the time from apogee to impact. It was just about 12 seconds exactly, and I entered that into a gravity calculator for falling objects (http://www.gravitycalc.com/) and got a result of 706 meters, which is 2,316 ft.
Although the project video shows step-by-step how to build the motors, I would caution anyone wanting to make one to take precautions. These are not toys. They can light things on fire, and fall down on peoples heads, which I imagine could cause serious injury.
You may need permits, or only be able to launch these on special experimental launch days with local rocketry clubs.
My launch was out in the middle of the dessert, miles and miles away from any people, property and anything flammable. Safety precautions were in place in case anything went wrong.
Having said that, I’m very proud of how these little motors perform, and amazed at how cheaply they can be made.

There are a few ways to use chemistry to power a rocket, but all involved an oxider and a fuel. And with no oxygen in space, what’s the best solution? Professor Andrea Sella from University College London discusses the solid state boosters of the space shuttle, the cryogenic liquid approach used in the 1970s, and demonstrates to dramatic effect the power that hypergolic reactions can provide.
Hypergolic mixtures spontaneously ignite, remove the need for a spark in space, and give a huge relative reaction. Andrea combines nitrogen dioxide and dimethylhydrazine to demonstrate how just a tiny amount of these substances can pack a powerful punch.

A quick tutorial on how to make Rocket Candy (aka R-Candy). There are dozens of different ways to make R-Candy. Having experimented many of them, we have come up with a method that has produced the best results for us. Please feel free to play around with our method to find a recipe that works best for you!
PLEASE NOTE: Cooking utensils used to make rocket fuel are not really suitable for use with food. It's best to just buy a cheap pan and grinder and dedicate them to fuel.

SUCROSE - Table Sugar: This can be purchased just about anywhere.
POTASSIUM NITRATE - Saltpeter or Stump Remover: Potassium Nitrate can be purchased in some hardware stores in the gardening sections. However, it is typically much more cost effective to purchase online. You want to get granulated potassium nitrate (not blocks).

HOW TO SET OFF YOUR ROCKET CANDY
You must not use a match or a lighter to light the fuel directly!!!! The fuel burns violently, and will almost certainly burn your hand. Always use fuses or electric igniters.

http://www.DancingScientist.com Aired prime time on Discovery Channel Canada on the showDaily Planet. This was my Halloween segment! I decided to compare the energy in sugar with the energy in artificial sweeter packets. A packet of Splenda actually has 3 calories, but in the USA if something has less than 5 calories it is rounded to zero. The calories in splenda come from the filler which is dextrose (AKA sugar). You ca nmake rocket fuel from it because splenda is 99% sugar. The reason it works is because the splenda sweetener is 100x sweeter than sugar so even though it has 3 calories, the equivalent "sweetness" from cane sugar is about 30 calories.

Rocket propellant is mass that is stored in some form of propellant tank, prior to being used as the propulsive mass that is ejected from a rocket engine in the form of a fluid jet to produce thrust. A fuel propellant is often burned with an oxidizer propellant to produce large volumes of very hot gas. These gases expand and push on a nozzle, which accelerates them until they rush out of the back of the rocket at extremely high speed, creating thrust. Sometimes the propellant is not burned, but can be externally heated for more performance. For smaller attitude control thrusters, a compressed gas escapes the spacecraft through a propelling nozzle.
Chemical rocket propellants are most commonly used, which undergo exothermic chemical reactions to produce hot gas used by a rocket for propulsive purposes.
In ion propulsion, the propellant is made of electrically charged atoms (ions), which are electromagnetically pushed out of the back of the spacecraft. Magnetically accelerated ion drives are not usually considered to be rockets however, but a similar class of thrusters use electrical heating and magnetic nozzles.

I decided to compare the energy in sugar with the energy in artificial sweeter packets. A packet of Splenda actually has 3 calories, but in the USA if something has less than 5 calories it is rounded to zero. The calories in splenda come from the filler which is dextrose (AKA sugar). You ca nmake rocket fuel from it because splenda is 99% sugar. The reason it works is because the splenda sweetener is 100x sweeter than sugar so even though it has 3 calories, the equivalent "sweetness" from cane sugar is about 30 calories.

This recipe calls for a 60/40 mix of KNO3 and white table sugar by weight, and I'm going to make a 100 gram batch, so I'm adding 60 grams of stump remover first, followed by 40 grams of granulated white sugar.
I'll need some sort of container to hold this in, and I'm thinking these Mega Block Legos might work. At this point, the mixture is just runny enough that it can be coaxed into the container. It takes about 60 grams to fill this red block, and when I've cooked up a little more, I'll add that to the blue one. It's darker in color because it cooked longer, and generally speaking, I think the less it is cooked, the better.
Another batch was made using a mix of 58% Stump Remover, 29% Sugar, and this time I used 13% Corn syrup, and 30mL water. The water was cooked out the same way as the last, and then about 1 gram of homemade rust powder was added, and stirred in throughly. When it was ready, it looked like a creamy chocolate frosting, and I packed that into the green LEGO. I may have accidentally trapped an air bubble inside.
Overall I think I'm happiest with these mixtures using the rust. With a different homemade casing that actually has a nozzle, I was able to get a successful rocket launch that I think went a couple thousand feet high.

After making my video on Homemade Rocket Fuel (http://bit.ly/DIYRocketFuel) I had a lot of requests on how I built the one that launched at the end of the video. Although that rocket motor worked very well, I wanted to get the process down to a science before making a video about it.
This project video shows a slightly different approach to the sugar motor using the same ingredients, and a demonstration of how the rocket motor performs. The main difference is that this is rammed powder as opposed to caramelizing the sugar mix.
Sugar rockets are the slowest burning of all rocket fuels, and it's highly unlikely that PVC will explode when using kitty litter plugs and sugar for the propellent. In all my destructive testing, and controlled attempts to get one to fail catastrophically, the PVC was never damaged. All that would happen is that the plugs would blast out.
Saying that, I wouldn't use PVC with black power rockets. That is a different story altogether.
These motor blasted up over 2,300 feet high without any payload, which has been very consistent with all the motors I made for the project video.
Some people wonder how I was able to measure it at 2,300 feet high. It's a rough guess based on my raw video footage. I was able to detect the apogee of the rocket by a timed delay mix showing the arch, then measuring the time from apogee to impact. It was just about 12 seconds exactly, and I entered that into a gravity calculator for falling objects (http://www.gravitycalc.com/) and got a result of 706 meters, which is 2,316 ft.
Although the project video shows step-by-step how to build the motors, I would caution anyone wanting to make one to take precautions. These are not toys. They can light things on fire, and fall down on peoples heads, which I imagine could cause serious injury.
You may need permits, or only be able to launch these on special experimental launch days with local rocketry clubs.
My launch was out in the middle of the dessert, miles and miles away from any people, property and anything flammable. Safety precautions were in place in case anything went wrong.
Having said that, I’m very proud of how these little motors perform, and amazed at how cheaply they can be made.

There are a few ways to use chemistry to power a rocket, but all involved an oxider and a fuel. And with no oxygen in space, what’s the best solution? Professor Andrea Sella from University College London discusses the solid state boosters of the space shuttle, the cryogenic liquid approach used in the 1970s, and demonstrates to dramatic effect the power that hypergolic reactions can provide.
Hypergolic mixtures spontaneously ignite, remove the need for a spark in space, and give a huge relative reaction. Andrea combines nitrogen dioxide and dimethylhydrazine to demonstrate how just a tiny amount of these substances can pack a powerful punch.

PLEASE NOTE: Cooking utensils used to make rocket fuel are not really suitable for use with food. It's best to just buy a cheap pan and grinder and dedicate them to fuel.
WHERE TO BUY THE INGREDIENTS
In general, almost everything here can be found on eBay, however it is also possible to purchase some of the ingredients locally.
SUCROSE - Table Sugar: This can be purchased just about anywhere.
POTASSIUM NITRATE - Saltpeter or Stump Remover: Potassium Nitrate can be purchased in some hardware stores in the gardening sections. However, it is typically much more cost effective to purchase online. You want to get granulated potassium nitrate (not blocks).

I decided to compare the energy in sugar with the energy in artificial sweeter packets. A packet of Splenda actually has 3 calories, but in the USA if something has less than 5 calories it is rounded to zero. The calories in splenda come from the filler which is dextrose (AKA sugar). You ca nmake rocket fuel from it because splenda is 99% sugar. The reason it works is because the splenda sweetener is 100x sweeter than sugar so even though it has 3 calories, the equivalent "sweetness" from cane sugar is about 30 calories.
