An excerpt from a discussion with Darrell Calkins expanding on Martin Buber's concept of I and Thou. CobaltSaffron Retreat 2014. www.CobaltSaffron.com
Session 3 - Being Truly Present I quoted the Jewish Philosopher Martin Buber who said that all real living is meeting. Do you agree with this? Buber also said “When two people relate to each other authentically and humanly, God is the electricity that surges between them.” What is your response to this? Have you experienced this? How does this fit with your experience of God? I also sent people out in groups of two, to answer two questions in no more than and no less than five words. 1. What is your dream for your life? 2. What do you need to let go of that is holding you back from living your life? I could’ve asked any number of questions, the point was to truly connect. What was that experience like? Discuss what it is like to be restricted to an exact number of words. Why do you think that exercise was given? (there isn’t a right answer, but to help us use an economy of words so our words matter; to use fewer words is to really hear the other person; to be able to get to the heart of what we mean when we talk.) The story of Moses and the burning bush is the first time God has spoken in 400 years. He didn’t choose a building, he didn’t choose eloquence, he didn’t choose words. He chose desolation, a stutterer, and a plain old bush. He told Moses to come no closer, but to take off his sandals. Have you felt the need to “take off your sandals?” If you can, take your shoes off now and walk around outside on the grass, and notice what happens. Come back and discuss the experience.

Huffington Post 2014-11-10Martin Buber (Hebrew: מרטין בובר; February 8, 1878 – June 13, 1965) was an Austrian-born Jewish philosopher best known for his philosophy of dialogue, a form of religious existentialism centered on the distinction between the I-Thou relationship and the I-It relationship. Born in Vienna, Buber came from a family of observant Jews, but broke with Jewish custom to pursue secular studies in philosophy. In 1902, Buber became the editor of the weekly Die Welt, the central organ of the Zionist movement, although he later withdrew from organizational work in Zionism. In 1923 Buber wrote his famous essay on existence, Ich und Du (later translated into English as I and Thou), and in 1925 he began translating the Hebrew Bible into the German language.
In 1930 Buber became an honorary professor at the University of Frankfurt am Main, and resigned in protest from his professorship immediately after Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933. He then founded the Central Office for Jewish Adult Education, which became an increasingly important body as the German government forbade Jews to attend public education. In 1938, Buber left Germany and settled in Jerusalem, Palestine, receiving a professorship at Hebrew University and lecturing in anthropology and introductory sociology.
