The UK boasts the largest creative industry sector in the world in terms of GDP. Just over 790,000 people work in "creative careers" in everything from advertising, craft, cultural heritage, design, gaming, literature, music, performing and the visual arts. Many people in the sector work in small agencies, small businesses or independently. They work in creating, curating, designing, making, selling, teaching and advising. The variety of cultural centres that offer employment is staggering: from galleries, arts centres to publishing houses, textile agencies the list is endless, because the UK has a dynamic and growing sector. It is a great source of young ideas, which are creating a global industry.
What each job entails depends on the area of specialism and so it is difficult to specify individual responsibilities and skills. In general, designer-makers, artists, writers are encouraged to continue in their development and training throughout their careers. There are many private and government bodies such as the Arts Council that can offer support. Overall, to work in an industry, which may only offer part-time or freelance work, needs resilience and perseverance. The type of personality that can work well and confidently in an independent capacity can work well in the Arts and Creative industries.
