Today, it’s all about oil and gas. Four expert panelists to discuss the current situation in recently volatile oil and gas markets in several contexts. The panel of four includes: Marin Katusa, Chief Energy Investment Strategist at Casey Research; Daniel Alpert, Managing Partner at Westwood Capital; Rob Barnett, Senior Energy Economist at Bloomberg Government; and Philip Verleger, Owner & President of PKVerleger LLC. First, oil has been priced in dollars for decades. However, with the growing power of emerging markets, there is an undercurrent of discussion that dollar hegemony in oil markets might not last. Will countries like China, Russia and Brazil move away from the dollar. Our panelists weigh in. The price of oil has dropped precipitously, with Brent Crude falling over $30 in the last few months. Why is oil falling so drastically and so suddenly and when will the drop stop? The panelists comment on who the winners and losers are. The panelists tell us whether Iraq really matters in a world of excess capacity and what we should really be watching for in the Middle East. Finally, the panel also talks about the huge opportunity in natural gas. While transportation infrastructure is still heavily geared to oil, fuel switching opportunities are increasing. With natural gas resources plentiful and cheap, this fuel could be the alternative energy source of note, even more than wind or solar power. For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/66104/short-films/a-crude-extraction-hd.html Heavily polluted from 50 years of living with the oil industry, the Niger Delta is riddled with corruption, oil theft and sabotage. This investigation reveals why oil and the Delta's residents do not mix. Nigeria says it's losing 400,000 barrels of oil a day to criminal activity. "The military are the biggest players. There's nothing you can do without seeking their consent", says a local oil trader. Nnimmo Bassey of Oil Watch International agues that, "oil has been the major factor that has dislocated everything", but others believe it can still benefit the local people. India was the fourth-largest consumer of crude oil and petroleum products in the world in 2013, after the United States, China, and Japan. The country depends heavily on imported crude oil, mostly from the Middle East. The aim of the new government is to source as much domestic production as it can and further bid rounds to attract new investments. There have been significant successes in the past in India by ONGC, GSPC, Reliance and Cairn Energy in finding domestic oil and gas from conventional resources. What else can be done to help fuel India’s demand for new sources of energy? Dr Mike Watts led the exploration efforts of the London listed Cairn Energy PLC for over more than 20 years in South Asia and will share his experiences during this address. Speaker: Dr. Mike Watts, Deputy Chief Executive, Cairn Energy PLC

Rotary drilling is characterized as a method of drilling that employs a sharp, rotational drill bit to bite its way through the earth’s crust. One of the most effective and common methods of drilling, it is used in the construction, mining, and oil industries for its ability to cut through even the most challenging and hardest formations. The rotary drill rig consists of a prime mover, hoisting equipment, rotating equipment and circulation equipment, all of which perform tasks crucial to drilling a well or hole. With the help of pneumatics, hydraulics or an electric motor, high torque and rotation are transmitted from the prime mover to the drill, which sits on a mast above the hole. Rotary drilling was first used for drilling oil wells in 1901 when Captain Anthony Lucas and Patillo Higgins applied it to their Spindletop well in Texas. By 1925, the rotary drilling method was improved with the use of a diesel engine. The first attempt at rotary drilling involved a device that sent a stream of water down a hollow shaft of the drill to remove cuttings. This was in contrast to the cable drill, whereby the operation is interrupted and cuttings are removed singularly before the drilling can resume. The early rotary drill was originally used for drilling in softer formations in areas such as California and the Gulf Coast; but this changed with the production of roller and cone bits comprising steel alloy. This addition made rotary drilling suitable for harder formations, such as rock, and it was eventually used for boring deep holes and wells. Rotary drilling became valuable to the oil industry because it was able to produce holes of a smaller diameter than cable drilling. This became possible because a hole produced by a rotary drill was the same diameter at the lower end as it was at the top. Rotary drilling provided many improvements to drilling applications. The nature of the rotary drill proved important when oil well cements were being produced. The process of unloading continuous sacks of cement to construct a well required the drilling techniques of the rotary drill, which could accommodate these new materials. Early oil drilling applications that were completed with cable tools or churn drills were laden with problems, such as erupting oil fountains that resulted in fires and the loss of valuable oil. The issues that arose from the high pressure of oil wells were remedied with the use of rotary drilling.
Texas A&M; University is deeply ingrained in the oil industry. Over the past several decades, Aggies have made their mark in rich oil fields all over the world – both on and offshore. Engineers, scientists, business leaders and pioneers have all utilized their Aggie education and core values to help make the oil industry what it is today. Oil War, 2005 - Nigeria is one of many developing countries to have discovered oil, and as is often the case, the rich get richer, and the poor suffer more than just loss of income. For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/18595/short-films/oil-war.html The kidnapping of four oil workers in the Niger Delta threatens to wreck havoc on the world's already red hot oil market. We bring back two pertinent reports on Nigeria's oil wars. Includes extensive interviews with militia leader, Asari. Nigeria's lucrative oil reserves may have enriched its politicians but they've brought little but misery to ordinary people. Now, a rebel group is fighting for a share of the profits. "I need help. I need help," begs a woman, clutching her young children in despair. Her home has just been demolished to create luxury housing for foreign oil workers. "The oil boom has turned into the oil doom!" laments Pastor Lekia. Across the Niger Delta, there's growing resentment at the oil industry. "Corruption pervades the whole place, starting with the way contracts are awarded," complains lawyer Ledum Mittee. "There seems to be some sort of collusion between the oil companies and those in power." But militia leader Asari Dokubo has vowed to sever that link. He's fighting to seize control of the oil and give it back to the people. "We own the oil!" he proclaims. "The thieves are the people in Abuja." And across Nigeria, young men are flocking to his call. Last September, he spooked the international markets and forced the price of oil to $50 a barrel by threatening to attack foreign oil companies. The government was forced to agree a truce but he's threatened to rearm unless oil companies leave. Nigerians no longer expect help from their own government. It's militia leaders like Asari who are winning their trust. Produced by ABC Australia. Peak oil, an event based on M. King Hubbert's theory, is the point in time when the maximum rate of extraction of petroleum is reached, after which the rate of production is expected to enter terminal decline. Peak oil theory is based on the observed rise, peak, (sometimes rapid) fall, and depletion of aggregate production rate in oil fields over time. Mostly due to the development of new production techniques and the exploitation of unconventional supplies, Hubbert's original predictions for world production proved premature.[2]Hubbert's original prediction that US Peak Oil would be in about 1970 was accurate, as US average annual production peaked in 1970 at 9.6 million barrels per day;[3] however, after a decade’s long decline, US production rebounded hitting 9.2 million barrels per day in early 2015.[4] Peak oil is often confused with oil depletion; peak oil is the point of maximum production, while depletion refers to a period of falling reserves and supply. Some observers, such as petroleum industry experts Kenneth S. Deffeyes and Matthew Simmons, predict negative global economy implications following a post-peak production decline and oil price increase because of the high dependence of most modern industrial transport, agricultural, and industrial systems on the low cost and high availability of oil. Predictions vary greatly as to what exactly these negative effects would be. Optimistic[2] estimations of peak production forecast the global decline will begin after 2020, and assume major investments in alternatives will occur before a crisis, without requiring major changes in the lifestyle of heavily oil-consuming nations. These models show the price of oil at first escalating and then retreating as other types of fuel and energy sources are used. Pessimistic predictions of future oil production made after 2007 stated either that the peak had already occurred, that oil production was on the cusp of the peak, or that it would occur shortly. The wide use of fossil fuels has been one of the most important stimuli of economic growth and prosperity since the industrial revolution, allowing humans to participate in takedown, or the consumption of energy at a greater rate than it is being replaced. Some believe that when oil production decreases, human culture, and modern technological society will be forced to change drastically. The impact of peak oil will depend heavily on the rate of decline and the development and adoption of effective alternatives. If alternatives are not forthcoming, the products produced with oil (including fertilizers, detergents, solvents, adhesives, and most plastics) would become scarce and expensive. In 2005, the United States Department of Energy published a report titled Peaking of World Oil Production: Impacts, Mitigation, & Risk Management.[132] Known as the Hirsch report, it stated, "The peaking of world oil production presents the U.S. and the world with an unprecedented risk management problem. As peaking is approached, liquid fuel prices and price volatility will increase dramatically, and, without timely mitigation, the economic, social, and political costs will be unprecedented. Viable mitigation options exist on both the supply and demand sides, but to have substantial impact, they must be initiated more than a decade in advance of peaking." Some of the information was updated in 2007. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_oil

http://tinyurl.com/jkp1w3eio7 The Secure Infinity Series 2MW generator set, with prime power for the offshore oil and gas industry. Robust design, superior quality containerised turbine generators for an infinite number of features and application engineering combinations. Background A global oil and gas exploration company needed additional power on one of their oil platforms in the Middle East. The challenge The main electrical power supply to this platform is provided via a 33kV subsea cable link of over 40Km. The requirement was to install two new generators of 2MVA (approx.) each, to cater the additional power requirement of full production needed to meet their contractual production agreements. The Solution Dale Power Solutions provided two bespoke secure infinity generator sets, each providing a continuous output of 2500kVA, 2000kW at 0.8 power factor, 6600Volts, three phase, 60HZ at 1800rpm. During this project, Dale Power Solutions faced several key challenges in order to install the two diesel generators on the oil rig. The first was the size of the container. We had to engineer a way to install the generator sets on the oil rig, under tight space constraints (maximum dimensions 13500mm L x 2438mm W x 5660mm H). Our solution was to mount the radiator and fuel tank externally on the roof of the generator, ensuring that we met our customers exacting requirements. The second challenge we had to overcome was the weight of the units. The platform crane which would be lifting the generators into place had strict weight limits. To resolve this dilemma we decided to remove the fuel tank and radiators from the roof of the generator thereby reducing the net weight to 36000KG so that we complied with the weight parameters. Once the generators were maneuvered into place on the oil rig, our engineers re-fitted the fuel tank and radiators. Prior to the installation and commission of the secure infinity diesel generators, a full Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) was carried out at our test facility witnessed by a team of engineers from the client. These tests included functional testing, load test runs, regulation, governing and synchronizing to fully demonstrate the system in accordance with project requirements. The three main messages On this project Dale Power Solutions exceeded the customers requirements by: Delivering maximum uptime Being the single source supplier and providing peace of mind Providing two bespoke generator sets, unique to their requirements ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dale Power Solutions are firmly established as one of the UK’s leading providers of secure power service and solutions. Cutting the National Ambient Air Quality Standard for ozone from 75 parts per billion to a 65-to-70 ppb range is unnecessary, premature, and badly mistaken. That was the message witnesses from the US oil and gas industry and other businesses strongly conveyed . . .
How can we expand the solar industry to stop the climate emergency? By developing cooperation between the PV manufactures in the US, Japan, Germany, China & Korea. If all manufactures cooperate to build more innovative panels we can build the solar economy to shut down the oil industry. Yes, companies will still compete to pioneer new technological innovations, but our world goal must be to save the planet. New ideas are what makes the solar field so exciting today. By cooperating to expand the amount of solar installed on homes, we can all help each other. We need to agree it is win, win, win for all 5 nations if we can install more solar on more private homes. Decentralization must be our key goal, to give more power to private home owners. If we develop policies that encourage banks and governments to lend more $$$ money to home owners, to buy more new solar powered homes, each with 100 solar panels, we can drive home builders to hire more young carpenters. This will give more old home owners money to buy new solar powered homes, with 100 solar panels, and so sell, or remodel their old homes. We want the home market to become more dynamic. This will drive the shift towards solar and give each city, and so each nation, more solar energy so they can shut down all coal, oil, nukes & gas. Shut down King CONG. If we compare the top 5 solar nations: US, Germany, Japan, Korea & China, we see that the sense of urgency is highest in China & Japan. This dynamic pioneering spirit in China is driving the Chinese solar industry to become the best in the world. China now makes the most advanced thin film solar panels in the world, of the highest quality. That is why most people prefer to buy thin film panels & solar powered cars from China. The US, and especially California needs to up its game face. Get back into the game. Grab some urgency. California is a state that has huge solar potential, but because they do not have a solar policy that emphasizes the need for a decentralized roof top home solar generation system, California is floundering. We have a lack of leadership in solar policy innovation. And a lack of solar technological innovation. Policy. We need to require our utilities to pay $0.49 kwh to solar homes that sell energy onto our grid. This is a Solar Payment Policy ( SPP). We need to double the number of home based roof top solar systems, owned by the home owner, so the owner gets the lions share of the money from solar. We must make investing in solar more attractive to the home owner. This requires making the whole system of buying solar simpler and “One Stop” at the city level. A young person should be able to go to a bank, then to city hall and then to the installer, on-line, all in one day. Three contracts. The city needs a policy that requires the Utility to pay the home owner a premium for 20-30 years. This will create a decentralized solar economy based on People and cities. This will put more political power in the hands of home owners. And make it easier for young people to buy new solar homes with 100 panels on the roof. The best policy change California could make would be to adopt a SPP. Governor Brown may not have a deep enough understanding of policy to adopt a SPP. Consequently, the People of Berkeley need to step up and assume their role as leaders of California, by adopting a SPP. It will take this decentralization, city by city approach to lift California, and so the world, into a solar economy. Solar Justice Team meets every Sunday. Obama EPA Chief Can’t Say Whether Climate Models Were False Or Not White House Takes Aim at Methane Emissions: 3 Key Takeaways Oil drilling sites such as the one seen above in North Dakota often flare off the natural gas that comes up with the crude. That gas is one of several industry sources of methane that the Obama administration is aiming to reduce with new rules this year. Tackling a huge climate issue, the Obama administration Wednesday announced long-awaited measures to slash U.S. emissions of methane—a potent greenhouse gas—from the oil and gas industry. Setting an "ambitious" goal, the White House is aiming for a 40 to 45 percent cut from 2012 levels in the next ten years. Releases of heat-trapping methane, the main component of natural gas, are rife in the booming oil and gas industry. Leaky equipment and the intentional flaring of "waste" gas at oil sites have been a side effect of the breakneck production that has made the U.S. the world's largest gas producer. The new target, according to the White House, will save enough natural gas in 2025 to heat more than two million homes for a year. The U.S. proposal comes in advance of another round of United Nations-led climate talks later this year in Paris that aim to finalize a new global accord to slow global warming. Countries are expected, in the next few months, to announce their commitments. The Natural Resources Defense Council called the plan "an important start," but NRDC and other environmental groups were critical of the focus on new oil and gas sites, rather than existing ones. "While addressing new sources is a critical step," said the group Earthjustice in a statement, "the Obama Administration must take stronger action to clean up existing sources."

How Will Iran Influence America's Future? Oil and Gates Trade Routes - Robert Baer (2008) Iran is an energy superpower and the Petroleum industry in Iran plays an important part in it. In 2004 Iran produced 5.1 percent of the world's total crude oil (3.9 million barrels (620,000 m3) per day), which generated revenues of US$25 billion to US$30 billion and was the country's primary source of foreign currency. At 2006 levels of production, oil proceeds represented about 18.7 percent of gross domestic product (GDP). However, the importance of the hydrocarbon sector to Iran's economy has been far greater. The oil and gas industry has been the engine of economic growth, directly affecting public development projects, the government's annual budget, and most foreign exchange sources. In FY 2009, for example, the sector accounted for 60 percent of total government revenues and 80 percent of the total annual value of both exports and foreign currency earnings. Oil and gas revenues are affected by the value of crude oil on the international market. It has been estimated that at the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) quota level (December 2004), a one-dollar change in the price of crude oil on the international market would alter Iran's oil revenues by US$1 billion. In 2012, Iran, which exports around 1.5 million barrels of crude oil a day, was the second-largest exporter among the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. In the same year, officials in Iran estimate that Iran's annual oil and gas revenues could reach $250 billion by 2015. Iran plans to invest a total of $500 billion in the oil sector before 2025. U~T San Diego 2015-04-05The petroleum industry includes the global processes of exploration, extraction, refining, transporting (often by oil tankers and pipelines), and marketing petroleum products. The largest volume products of the industry are fuel oil and gasoline (petrol). Petroleum (oil) is also the raw material for many chemical products, including pharmaceuticals, solvents, fertilizers, pesticides, and plastics. The industry is usually divided into three major components: upstream, midstream and downstream. Midstream operations are usually included in the downstream category.
Petroleum is vital to many industries, and is of importance to the maintenance of industrial civilization in its current configuration, and thus is a critical concern for many nations. Oil accounts for a large percentage of the world’s energy consumption, ranging from as low of 32% for Europe and Asia, up to a high of 53% for the Middle East.
Other geographic regions’ consumption patterns are as follows: South and Central America (44%), Africa (41%), and North America (40%). The world consumes 30 billion barrels (4.8 km³) of oil per year, with developed nations being the largest consumers. The United States consumed 25% of the oil produced in 2007. The production, distribution, refining, and retailing of petroleum taken as a whole represents the world's largest industry in terms of dollar value.
