Michael Vassar is Co-founder and Chief Science Officer of MetaMed Research, a medical consulting firm that conducts personalized medical research for clients. In this video interview, Vassar explains why the impetus for founding the company and dissects the many faults of modern medical research. Most notably, Vassar decries the fact that we have "essentially banned the sort of research which has given us all of our successes in medicine from the entire history of medicine." Hospitals are factories, says Vassar, in which thinkers are instructed not to think but to execute protocol. And that's the opposite of progress. You can't make important medical discoveries when you're just pushing buttons. Read more at BigThink.com: http://goo.gl/CqgZml Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Studies show that the average doctor’s visit involves 8 to 11 minutes of doctor-patient time. Meanwhile that medical intake interviews that doctors are taught to give in medical school should take an average of two to three hours. This is pretty typical of the system. Systematically people are taught to do something in medical school that centuries of scholarly and scientific discovery have shown should allow them to bring humanities knowledge to bear on a case. And systematically industrial processes are set up to go through the motions of doing something symbolic of that but which there is no reason to think will actually work. We have essentially banned the sort of research which has given us all of our successes in medicine from the entire history of medicine. Like there have been a few kind of decent cancer successes but there has never been a penicillin, there has never been a smallpox vaccine. There has never been a vitamin C for scurvy. If you look at the sort of research that to which we attribute practically all of the historical successes of science and especially of medicine, we see that there is virtually no funding for it and there is virtually no regulatory framework for doing it legally and for publishing it. The sort of research that we have invented in the post-World War II era is a sort of research that is designed to confirm and assert that we are doing research rather than designed to cure diseases. After we do the research no one reads it anyway and it’s well known that even if there was no fraud, given the standards that we’re doing somewhere around John Ioannidis published in the most cited paper in the history of PLOS, our Public Library of Science, something like 80 percent of all medical findings, 90 percent of cancer findings, 50 percent of the best medical findings considered highest quality and 25 percent of medical consensus would be false in the absence of any fraud based on the methodologies. And that’s not false in the sense of useless, that’s false in the sense of not true. In addition, there’s the uselessness of statistical rather than practical significance, et cetera. Then there is the, as I say, phenomena that generally no one reads the literature anyway because as bad as the literature is it’s still possible by digging through it in excruciating depth and actually thinking hard in an analytic way doing detective work with the weak clues that it provides, it’s possible to do enormously better than you could realistically expect to do. We have television shows about medical detectives. Dr. House who was inspired by Sherlock Holmes. But have you heard of the CSI effect? CSI is a television show about forensic detectives and the CSI effect is the policy of excluding people who watch CSI from juries because people who have a reasonable model of what forensic science is capable of but don’t realize that in realistic practice in the ordinary execution of the law this is never done will frequently acquit based on the absence of evidence at a standard that would be considered adequate on television. Benton Emblom, M.D., is a sports medicine orthopaedic surgeon at Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, AL. Dr. Emblom specializes in sports medicine and arthroscopic treatment of the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee. A summa cum laude graduate of the University of Alabama, Dr. Emblom earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry and mathematics. He received his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine and completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at UAB Hospital. He then completed a one-year orthopaedic sports medicine fellowship with Dr. James Andrews at the American Sports Medicine Institute. Following that, he completed additional training in hip arthroscopy with Dr. Thomas Byrd in Nashville, which provided focused training in arthroscopic and mini-open surgery for non-arthritic hip disorders. Dr. Emblom presents research and delivers instructional lectures at numerous orthopaedic and specialty related conferences. He has also authored research and book chapters on topics related to orthopaedics and sports medicine. Dr. Emblom currently performs clinical and biomechanical research at the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI). Dr. Emblom holds a special passion for the field of sports medicine because he participated in sports throughout his childhood. Pediatric sports injuries are of particular interest, including ACL injuries of the knee and throwing injuries to the elbow. One aspect of sports he admired was the goals that a team could accomplish together. Now, as a team physician for Samford University, the University of Alabama and Hoover High School, Dr. Emblom is again working on a team to accomplish a shared goal: to keep players safe and to return them to the field after an injury. Dr. Emblom's commonly performed arthroscopic and reconstructive procedures include: shoulder surgeries such as rotator cuff repair, instability and labral repair and AC joint reconstruction; elbow surgeries such as ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction (Tommy John), distal biceps tendon repair, arthroscopic loose body removal and tennis elbow release; knee surgeries such as ligament reconstruction (ACL, PCL, MCL, posterolateral corner), arthroscopic meniscus repair and patella instability (MPFL reconstruction); and hip surgeries such as non-arthritic hip preservation with labral repair and femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) correction, snapping hip release and athletic pubalgia, or sports hernia, repair. Mesenchymal stem cell augmentation has been a more recent addition to his surgical armamentarium. Dr. Emblom has received many awards and honors, including the Kurt Niemann, M.D. Outstanding Orthopaedic Chief Resident Award (2008), UASOM Dean's Achievement Award (2002), Alpha Omega Alpha (2001), APC Pathology Honor Society (2001), Russell-Roberts Medical Scholarship (2001), Newsome-Osment Medical Scholarship (2000), Long Medical Scholarship (1999), Peacock Teaching Fellowship (1999), J. Garber Gallbraith, M.D. Memorial Award (1998), Phi Beta Kappa (1998), University of Alabama National Alumni Association Most Outstanding Senior (1998), American Institute of Chemists Award (1998), Outstanding Chemistry Student Award (1997), Gamma Sigma Epsilon Honorary, President (1996), Outstanding Freshman Chemistry Student Award (1995). Dr. Emblom and his wife Anna have two sets of twins: fraternal girls, Ella and Camille, and identical boys, Lawton and Haston. In his spare time, he enjoys hunting, fishing, flying and spending time outdoors with his family. NFL stars to donate brains for medical research. Two American Football stars say they will donate their brains for medical research after their deaths. New York Giants punter Steve Weatherford and former Seattle Seahawks receiver Sidney Rice want to support studies into brain injuries. Many former players in the sport suffer degenerative brain disease. "There are a lot of issues that stem from brain injuries and it's not just professional athletes. This affects everybody," Weatherford said. Rice won the Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks last year before retiring - at the age of 27 - over fears for his long-term health after absorbing so many blows to the head. Both he and Weatherford said they hoped their commitment could persuade others to support research into brain injuries. Around 4,500 former players are suing the National Football League (NFL) over head injuries suffered during their careers. They are close to a settlement worth around $1bn (£655m). "A lot of my team-mates and a lot of close friends have dealt with concussions and the depression that comes with that," said Weatherford. The pair made a joint announcement to coincide with Brain Injury Awareness Month in the US. Rice estimates he suffered between 15 and 20 concussions playing American Football from the age of eight. "I had my fair share of fun in the NFL," he said. "Unfortunately, I wasn't educated enough on what concussions can lead to. The brain studies by the doctors will be huge to help, maybe prevent."

Amy Goodman on East Timor, U.S. Foreign Policy, Alternative Medicine & Health Care (1999) In 1991, covering the East Timor independence movement, Goodman and fellow journalist Allan Nairn reported that they were badly beaten by Indonesian soldiers after witnessing a mass killing of Timorese demonstrators in what became known as the Santa Cruz Massacre. Alternative medicine is any practice that is put forward as having the healing effects of medicine but is not based on evidence gathered using the scientific method.[1] It consists of a wide range of health care practices, products and therapies,[2] using alternative medical diagnoses and treatments which typically have not been included in the degree courses of established medical schools or used in conventional medicine. Examples of alternative medicine include homeopathy, naturopathy, chiropractic, energy medicine and acupuncture. Complementary medicine is alternative medicine used together with conventional medical treatment in a belief, not proven by using scientific methods, that it complements the treatment.[n 1][1][4][5] CAM is the abbreviation for Complementary and alternative medicine.[6][7] Integrative medicine (or integrative health) is the combination of the practices and methods of alternative medicine with conventional medicine.[8] The term alternative medicine is used in information issued by public bodies in the Commonwealth of Australia[9] the United Kingdom[10] and the United States of America.[11] Regulation and licensing of alternative medicine and health care providers varies from country to country, and state to state. Among critics, a journalist was quoted in 2003 as having said There is really no such thing as alternative medicine, just medicine that works and medicine that doesn't. [12] A study published in 1998 indicates that a majority of alternative medicine use was in conjunction with standard medical treatments.[151] Approximately 4.4 percent of those studied used alternative medicine as a replacement for conventional medicine. The research found that those having used alternative medicine tended to have higher education or report poorer health status. Dissatisfaction with conventional medicine was not a meaningful factor in the choice, but rather the majority of alternative medicine users appear to be doing so largely because they find these healthcare alternatives to be more congruent with their own values, beliefs, and philosophical orientations toward health and life. In particular, subjects reported a holistic orientation to health, a transformational experience that changed their worldview, identification with a number of groups committed to environmentalism, feminism, psychology, and/or spirituality and personal growth, or that they were suffering from a variety of common and minor ailments -- notable ones being anxiety, back problems, and chronic pain. Authors have speculated on the socio-cultural and psychological reasons for the appeal of alternative medicines among that minority using them in lieu of conventional medicine. There are several socio-cultural reasons for the interest in these treatments centered on the low level of scientific literacy among the public at large and a concomitant increase in antiscientific attitudes and new age mysticism.[204] Related to this are vigorous marketing[207] of extravagant claims by the alternative medical community combined with inadequate media scrutiny and attacks on critics.
NFL stars to donate brains for medical research Two American Football stars say they will donate their brains for medical research after their deaths.
The loss of tropical rainforests is a huge blow for the thousands of species that call them home - but it's also a huge blow in the fight to save our planet from the greatest threat it has ever faced. Tampa Bay Online 2015-03-27Biomedical research (or experimental medicine), in general simply known as medical research, is the basic research, applied research, or translational research conducted to aid and support the body of knowledge in the field of medicine. Medical research can be divided into two general categories: the evaluation of new treatments for both safety and efficacy in what are termed clinical trials, and all other research that contributes to the development of new treatments. The latter is termed preclinical research if its goal is specifically to elaborate knowledge for the development of new therapeutic strategies. A new paradigm to biomedical research is being termed translational research, which focuses on iterative feedback loops between the basic and clinical research domains to accelerate knowledge translation from the bedside to the bench, and back again. Medical research may involve doing research on public health, biochemistry, clinical research, microbiology, physiology, oncology, surgery and research on many other non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
