The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) and the United States Missile Defense Agency (MDA) announced the successful completion of an Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) intercept flight test, in cooperation with the US Navy, off the coast of Kauai in Hawaii. The event marked the fourth time that a JMSDF ship has engaged a ballistic missile target, including three successful intercepts, with the sea-based midcourse engagement capability provided by Aegis BMD. The JFTM-4 test event verified the newest engagement capability of the Japan Aegis BMD configuration of the recently upgraded Japanese destroyer, JS KIRISHIMA. At approximately 5:06 pm (HST), 12:06 pm Tokyo time on Oct. 29, 2010, a separating 1000 km class ballistic missile target was launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility at Barking Sands, Kauai, Hawaii. JS KIRISHIMA crew members detected and tracked the target. The Aegis Weapon System then developed a fire control solution and launched a Standard Missile -3 (SM-3) Block IA missile. Approximately three minutes later, the SM-3 successfully intercepted the target approximately 100 miles above the Pacific Ocean. On 20 Feb 2008 HST, the USS Lake Erie (CG-70) fired a modified tactical Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) missile at the malfunctioned spy satellite USA 193. The impact occurred at about 150 miles above the Pacific Ocean and at an impact velocity of around 22000 mph. Air Force Lt. Gen. Henry "Trey" Obering, director of the Missile Defense Agency, announced today that an interceptor missile launched from the US Navy Aegis cruiser USS Lake Erie successfully intercepted and destroyed a short-range target missile launched from the Hawaiian island of Kauai. This is the fifth successful intercept in six tests. This test marked the first use of an operationally configured Standard Missile 3 interceptor, and is designed to intercept and destroy short to intermediate range ballistic missiles. The Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense is an integral part of the Ballistic Missile Defense System now being developed, tested and fielded by the Missile Defense Agency as part of a "layered" missile defense designed to intercept and destroy ballistic missiles of all ranges—short, medium, intermediate and long-range—during any phase of their flight. The mission was completed by the cruiser USS Lake Erie (CG 70), using the tactically-certified Aegis BMD shipboard weapon system, modified for a terminal capability, and the modified SM-2 Blk IV. This is the 35th successful terminal and midcourse defense intercept in 43 tests since 2001. The test involved an Aegis cruiser modified to detect, control and engage a ballistic missile target with a modified Standard Missile - 2 (SM-2) Block IV. The Pearl Harbor-based Aegis cruiser USS Lake Erie (CG 70) conducted the mission against a short-range target missile launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility, Barking Sands, Kauai, Hawaii. It was the first sea-based intercept of a ballistic missile in its terminal phase. The modified Aegis Weapon System and the modified SM-2 Block IV provided the firing ship the capability to guide the missile to achieve either; 1) a direct body to body hit between the interceptor and the threat or, 2) a near-direct hit where the high pressure, heat and fragments are placed on the threat by a blast fragmentation warhead. Flight Mission-3 (FM-3) involved the firing of a developmental Standard Missile 3 (SM-3) from the Aegis cruiser USS Lake Erie to intercept an Aries ballistic missile target launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. The target was launched at 9:23 pm (EDT). The USS Lake Erie, equipped with Aegis Lightweight Exo-Atmospheric Projectile Intercept (ALI) computer programs and equipment, developed a fire control solution without any external sensor inputs. About six minutes after the Aries was launched, USS Lake Erie s Aegis Weapon System launched an SM-3. Approximately two minutes after the SM-3 launch, the missile s kinetic warhead acquired, tracked, and diverted into the target, demonstrating the SMD ALI system s capability to hit the ballistic missile target in the exo-atmosphere. The primary objective of this test was to demonstrate the ALI system capability to hit the ballistic missile target. During this event, entitled Stellar Avenger, the Aegis BMD-equipped ship, USS Hopper (DDG 70), detected, tracked, fired and guided a Standard Missile -3 (SM-3) Block (Blk) IA to intercept a sub-scale short range ballistic missile. The target was launched from the Kauai Test Facility, co-located on the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF), Barking Sands, Kauai. It was the 19th successful intercept in 23 at-sea firings, for the Aegis BMD Program, including the February 2008 destruction of the malfunctioning satellite above the earth's atmosphere. Stellar Avenger was part of the continual evaluation of the certified and fielded Aegis BMD system at-sea today. At approximately 5:40 pm (HST), 11:40 pm (EDT), a target was launched from PMRF. Three US Navy Aegis BMD-equipped ships, the cruiser, USS Lake Erie (CG 70) and destroyers USS Hopper (DDG 70) and USS O'Kane (DDG 77) detected and tracked the target with their SPY radars. Each developed fire control solutions. At 5:42 pm (HST), 11:42 pm (EDT) the crew of USS Hopper fired one SM-3 Blk IA missile. Air Force Lieutenant General Henry "Trey" Obering III announced that the US Missile Defense Agency (MDA), in cooperation with the Japan Defense Agency and the US Navy, today successfully completed a cooperative flight test mission. This flight test mission, entitled Joint Control Test Vehicle-1 (JCTV-1), demonstrated the performance of an SM-3 missile that has been modified with a Japan-designed advanced nosecone and the Aegis BMD Weapon System. In previous Aegis BMD flight test missions, the SM-3 missile maneuvered to eject the nosecone before deploying the kinetic warhead to intercept the target. With the modified configuration, the nosecone opens like a clamshell without any missile maneuvers. At approximately 10:45 am (HST), 3:45 pm (EST) a simulated target was entered into the Aegis BMD Weapon System onboard the USS Lake Erie (CG 70). Based on the simulated target, the ship developed a fire control solution. At approximately 10:47 am (HST), 3:47 pm (EST), the Lake Erie's crew launched the modified SM-3. The Aegis BMD Weapon System guided the SM-3 through its first, second, and third stages. At 10:48 am (HST), 3:48 pm (EST), after completion of the third stage's burn, the advanced design nosecone was deployed at approximately 55 miles above the Pacific Ocean and 60 miles northwest of Kauai. The Missile Defense Agency and the US Navy announced today a successful flight test in the continuing development of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense element of the Ballistic Missile Defense System. Flight Mission-4 (FM-4) involved the firing of a developmental Standard Missile 3 (SM-3) from the Aegis ballistic missile defense cruiser USS LAKE ERIE (CG-70) to engage a ballistic missile target launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. The target was launched at 2:30 pm (HST)/ 7:30 pm (EST). The USS LAKE ERIE equipped with Aegis BMD computer programs and equipment, developed a fire control solution without any external sensor inputs. Within two minutes after target launch, USS LAKE ERIEÕs Aegis Weapon System fired the SM-3 guided missile. Approximately two minutes later, the missileÕs Kinetic Warhead acquired, tracked, and diverted into the target, demonstrating the Aegis BMD systemÕs capability to engage the ballistic missile target in the ascent phase. This was the third consecutive target intercept flight, demonstrating Aegis BMD system robustness. Lieutenant General Henry "Trey" Obering, Missile Defense Agency (MDA) director, announced the successful completion today of the latest Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense "hit to kill" intercept flight test. Conducted jointly with the US Navy, the test involved the simultaneous engagements of a ballistic missile "unitary" target (meaning that the target warhead and booster remain attached) and a surrogate hostile air target. This marked the eighth successful intercept in ten flight tests for the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) Program. The Aegis BMD system is the maritime component of the MDA's Ballistic Missile Defense System, and is designed to intercept and destroy short to intermediate-range ballistic missiles. This test also marked the 27th successful hit to kill intercept in tests since 2001. The mission was completed by the Aegis BMD cruiser USS Lake Erie (CG 70), using the Aegis BMD's shipboard weapon system; the Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IA, against the ballistic missile target; and the Standard Missile-2 (SM-2) Block IIIA, against the surrogate hostile air target. The test demonstrated the USS Lake Erie's ability to engage a ballistic missile threat and defend itself from attack at the same time.
