Sir Joseph Norman Lockyer, FRS (17 May 1836 – 16 August 1920), known simply as Norman Lockyer, was an English scientist and astronomer. Along with the French scientist Pierre Janssen he is credited with discovering the gas helium. Lockyer also is remembered for being the founder and first editor of the influential journal Nature.
Lockyer was born in Rugby, Warwickshire. After a conventional schooling supplemented by travel in Switzerland and France, he worked for some years as a civil servant in the British War office. He settled in Wimbledon, South London after marrying Winifred James. He was a keen amateur astronomer with a particular interest in the Sun. In 1885 he became the world's first professor of astronomical physics at the Royal College of Science, South Kensington, now part of Imperial College. At the college, the Solar Physics Observatory was built for him and here he directed research until 1913.
In the 1860s Lockyer became fascinated by electromagnetic spectroscopy as an analytical tool for determining the composition of heavenly bodies. He conducted his research from his new home in West Hampstead, with a 6¼ inch telescope which he had already used in Wimbledon.

On location at our local historical observatory The Norman Lockyer Observatory Salcombe Hill Sidmouth. Tesing the Zi8, Martin and myself are setting up and videoing. I realised after filming that the wide feild lens that I had bought was loose in the thread so the video seems to wobble a bit also the vignetting is more noticeable. Near the end I show jupiter live on the big screen in the lecture theatre which is being sent remotely from my laptop in the grounds using remote acess software, we use this when the weather is rather bitter and also on public open evenings we can display live deep space images as they are being taken. Youtube seems to have messed with a bit of the video during upload hence the grey screens!!...

"Three Coins in the Fountain" is a popular song which received the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1954. The melody was written by Jule Styne, the lyrics by Sammy Cahn. It was written for the romance film, Three Coins in the Fountain and refers to the act of throwing a coin into the Trevi Fountain in Rome while making a wish. Each of the film's three stars performs this act. Cahn and Jule Styne were asked to write the song to fit the movie but were unable to either see the film or read the script. They completed the song in an hour and had produced a demonstration record withFrank Sinatra by the following day. The song was subsequently used in the film soundtrack but in the rush Twentieth Century Fox neglected to sign a contract with the composers, allowing them to claim complete...
