Harold Harvey (1874-1941)
Harold Charles Francis Harvey was born on 20 May 1874 in North Parade, Penzance, Cornwall, the eldest of eight children. His father was a bank clerk. Harvey trained in painting at the Penzance Art School under Norman Garstin, and attended the Academie Julian in Paris between 1894 and 1896.
Before the First World War (1914-18) his style was impressionistic and his works mostly depicted scenes of the local fishing and agricultural communities, such as ‘In the Whiting Ground’ (c1900, now in Penlee House at Penzance). His work matured from about 1905 with brighter colours, and simpler compositions.
He married Gertrude Bodinnar on 19 April 1911 at St Peter’s church, Newlyn, and they moved to Maen Cottage, high on Chywoone Hill overlooking Newlyn and Penzance. Gertrude herself became a painter, and took an active part in applied arts, particularly concerning fabrics. They had no children.
He exhibited at the Newlyn Gallery and major provincial galleries, and had his first London show in 1913. From 1914 he created a long series of interior views, often set in his own home, and featuring his wife, friends and local people. These scenes are often painted in a crisper style than previously, and several include small still-lives of tableware. He was exempted from military service, presumably for reasons of health.
In the 1920s he achieved the full development of his ability and command of different subjects. Using a clearly-defined style of depiction he continued the series of interior views (eg ‘The Critics’ (1922) now at Birmingham), but he also created many notable outdoor scenes (eg ‘Girl on a Cliff’ (1926, now at Penleee House in Penzance) with either a landscape or seaside setting. He also began painting works with a religious theme. He achieved public recognition, and was selected to take part in the Venice Biennale of 1924. During the 1920s he ran a school of painting with his friend Ernest Procter (1886 – 1935).
Harvey’s last decade displayed all the remarkable abilities he had developed, and the wide range of his subject matter which included interiors, portraits, landscapes, religious themes, and the industrial landscape of Cornwall. In 1938 he featured in an article in Picture Post about the artistic colony at Newlyn. He continued painting up to his death on 19 May 1941.

Cornwall, UK, is a unique place often with its own way of doing things. In this video we travel the county to flavour the Christmas celebrations including Tom Bowcock's Eve in Mousehole, traditional Cornish carols with brass bands and choirs, poetry from Sir John Betjeman, the Cotehele Garland and the Crib at Truro cathedral.
We also see the Christmas lights in Leedstown, Hayle, Camborne, Launceston, Fowey, Newlyn, Mousehole, St Ives, Penzance, Helston, Redruth, St Austell, Mylor, Angarrack (Cornwall's finest!) and Truro.
We also pause to reflect on the Penlee Lifeboat Disaster and have a quick glimpse of the Mike Moyle Memorial Swim in Bude.
With 320 miles of coastline Cornwall does not get snow very often (but with the lanes and hills we feel its impact when it does!), so we also take a look at some stunning still photographs of Cornwall under a blanket of white (not that Christmas 2014 was a white Christmas, but we can dream!).
So warm a mince pie, give it a dollop of clotted cream, grab a mug of your favourite and pull up an armchair for the next 42 minutes and enjoy a traditional Cornish Christmas.

Long before there were rocks Aboriginal rock artists painted the dreamtime, the Aboriginal story of the beginning of the world. There are large numbers of these paintings under the ground of Kakadu National Park, which is actually owned by the Aboriginal people.
The ancient art of the Aboriginal people is like a history book and a guide to everyday life. Long ago, Aboriginal people believed that the paintings had special power. Nowadays, Aboriginal art is also getting more and more famous. They are the oldest art records of human civilization in the world.
The Aboriginal people have most likely lived in what is now Australia for at least forty thousand, possibly a hundred thousand years. This means that they are the oldest continuous human culture on Earth.
This video and printable is designed for teachers and for ESL learners and homeschoolers.

A campsite dramatically located right on the edge of the country, on the Atlantic coast of Cornwall.
Situated on the Land’s End Penninsula, within a few miles of both the north and south coasts of Cornwall, is where you’ll find our pretty Sennon Cove Club campsite. Although a couple of miles north of Sennon Cove, the campsite does enjoy sea views over the cove from some pitches.
Gwynver Beach is a 25 minute walk from the campsite. The beach at Sennen is a 45 minute walk away from the campsite. From there, the energetic can walk over the coastal path to Land’s End, another 90 minutes away. Land’s End is England’s most westerly point and, as well as spectacular scenery, there are many family attractions including a 4D film experience and the Monsters of the Deep exhibition. Back in Sennon Cove you can learn to surf.
Our tranquil campsite has 72 pitches and all the facilities you need - a small play area for the kids, and a playing field for ball games; a small shop selling the basics, a laundry with washing machine and dryer with an iron and ironing board also available and an indoor washing up area.
The south coast of the peninsular offers Gwenver and Porthcurno, also the Telegraph Museum and the Minack cliff top theatre and Penzance with its historic harbour areas. Also, pretty out-of-the-way fishing coves, including Penberth, Mousehole and Newlyn, with its fish festival at the end of August.
North from the campsite, a pretty but very narrow, windy road leads through St. Just and Pendeen. There are some excellent walks around the old mine workings near to Botallack and the Geevor Mine, for those with an interest in this part of Cornwall's industrial past. Further afield, via Zennor, the pretty, but very busy, fishing port of St Ives with its Tate Gallery of modern art is worth a visit
Access and SatNav Advice
The site entrance is situated on the B3306, approximately 200 yards off the A30. Towing units should avoid going into Sennon Cove as turning is difficult.

As amateur swimmers prepare for the trailblazing open-water mass marathon that is the 10km swim down the river Dart, pioneers of outdoor swimming are reflecting on how far they have come.
With more than 170 events each year, open-water swimming has become a pursuit enjoyed by tens of thousands in the UK. This September, 1,600 men and women will take part in the river Dart swim in Devon – double the number of participants in the Outdoor Swimming Society’s 2014 event. Across the UK, record numbers of swimmers have joined every event in the 2015 season.
“The first mass open-water swim we organised was in 2006 – a mile swim round Windermere,” said Kate Rew, founder of the Outdoor Swimming Society, which celebrates its 10th anniversary next year. “We went round an island and stopped there for hot chocolate. Today, with people swimming much greater distances, one mile doesn’t seem very much, but, at the time, these people felt like brave pioneers. Now the numbers of people taking part are in the tens of thousands.”
