[TRANSCRIPT] In the long term, one goal of the EU is the economic, social and infrastructural alignment of all regions, thus improving the lives of all Europeans. The economic prosperity is measured by the GDP. However, it is not very meaningful, because it only considers Member States as a whole. For an effective structural policy, it is important that calculations concerning to the economic strength of Europe are regarded as a sum of calculations of the economic strength of many regions. Instead of focusing the GDP of the States, more detailed geographical areas are considered. Therefore, the EU countries have to publish the data for their own regions, which must be collected in the same manner. By harmonizing the measurement methodology, the data and, thus, the regions are compareable. The result is the regional GDP of all regions. Measures of economic policy, which are also promoted and supported, are recommended to regions of different economic strength. On the basis of regional data, EU leaders and regional managers can practice an efficient regional policy in close cooperation. For this purpose, the EU provides various Structural Funds. And the results speak for themselves. They include: 600,000 new jobs 78,000 supported start-ups and 26,000 road kilometers Funded projects can also be found in your region, maybe even right outside your door! [TRANSCRIPT] Somewhere someone is always talking about inflation. One main task of Eurostat which relates to inflation is the calculation of the harmonized index of consumer prices. A price index is an indicator of the development of prices for selected products, for example, a cup of coffee. At Eurostat Peter observes how the prices for products change over time. Here the price level is measured, i.e. the number of units of a currency you have to pay for one unit of a product. An increasing price level is called inflation, which manifests itself in a positive rate of inflation and decreasing purchasing power. If Peter pays 1 Euro for a cup of coffee today, but 2 Euros after one year, the inflation rate for coffee is 100%. The purchasing power has been halved. He now has to pay the double amount of money for the same amount of coffee. Every state calculates the change in the price level for itself in the CPI. On the European level, however a standardization and harmonization for this measuring is required. To calculate the HICP of Europe, all national HICPs of the Member States are required. Eurostat monitors the compliance with the rules for determining the national HICPs and, on this basis, calculates the HICP for Europe. Information about and the comparability of inflation rates are essential for the design of different policy fields, especially for monetary and economic policy. [TRANSCRIPT] This is Peter, perhaps you know him? Peter works for the welfare of his family and, incidentally, also for 500 million inhabitants of Europe - and one of them is you! Peter works for Eurostat, the European Statistical Office, one of the main institutions of the European Union. And Peter loves coffee in all its variations, like all Europeans love coffee. An important task Peter has, is the calculation of the gross domestic product, GDP, for regions. The GDP is a measure of the economic performance and forms the total value of all goods produced and services rendered in a certain period. The GDP thus constitutes a measure of economic performance, economic growth and material prosperity. A further object of Peter at Eurostat is the calculation of the harmonized index of consumer prices, HICP, for measuring the rate of inflation in Europe. A central concept in this context is the basket of goods, which is a collection of products and services that are most frequently requested. A third task of Eurostat is the calculation of purchasing power parities, PPP. Only through PPP, the previously mentioned aspects are measurable in a realistic way. All three concepts are interdependent and can only work together. Without them, any policy-making at European level would not be feasible. [TRANSCRIPT] If we are interested in growth, we mean to improve our standard of living. Every state calculates the GDP in its own currency. So, can they be compared to each other? The GDP in a national currency cannot simply be changed into Euro at the relevant exchange rate in an expedient way, because the exchange rates are subject to strong fluctuations and the purchasing power is different in each country. If you want to compare countries, the said aspects need to be corrected. The principle is simple: The data are calculated using the same prices for all countries. The PPP here are price relatives that show how many units of foreign currency are needed to purchase a product which is available for one unit of the domestic currency in a country. A PPP of 2 for a cup of coffee in the USA compared to Germany means that you can purchase the same quantity in the USA for two dollars, like in Germany for one euro. This way, the PPP does not only possible to convert into a single currency, but also to correct the effects of the exchange rates and adjust the differences in the price level of the countries. Due the particularity of a single currency in the euro zone, Eurostat has set an artificial currency as the standard, the so-called Purchasing Power Standard PPS. PPP can be used for comparisons of economic prosperity, which are relevant in different fields of policy. The allocation of funding from the Structural and Cohesion Funds of the EU would be impossible without these comparisons. Thus, the calculation of PPP and its use has a direct impact on the everyday life and work of every European - including you. Eurostat - Your key to European statistics!
