New York is a state in the Northeastern United States and is the United States' 27th-most extensive, fourth-most populous, and seventh-most densely populated state. New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border in the Atlantic Ocean with Rhode Island, east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the north and Ontario to the west and north. The state of New York, with an estimated 19.8 million residents in 2015, is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City, the state's most populous city and its economic hub.
With an estimated population of nearly 8.5 million in 2014, New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. The New York City Metropolitan Area is one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. New York City is a global city, exerting a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. The home of the United Nations Headquarters, New York City is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world, as well as the world's most economically powerful city. New York City makes up over 40% of the population of New York State. Two-thirds of the state's population lives in the New York City Metropolitan Area, and nearly 40% live on Long Island. Both the state and New York City were named for the 17th century Duke of York, future King James II of England. The next four most populous cities in the state are Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse, while the state capital is Albany.
30 Rockefeller Plaza is an American Art Deco skyscraper that forms the centerpiece of Rockefeller Center in midtown Manhattan, New York City, NY. The exterior signage was changed to reflect the building's new name, Comcast Building, on July 1, 2015, following the transfer of ownership to a corporate owner, Comcast. It was formerly called the RCA Building from 1933 to 1988, and later the GE Building from 1988 to 2015. Nicknames include The Slab and 30 Rock. The building is most famous for housing the NBC television network headquarters. At 850 feet (260 m) high, the 70-story building is the 14th tallest in New York City and the 39th tallest in the United States.
The building underwent a US$170 million floor-by-floor interior renovation in 2014. The renovation included new Comcast signage atop the building; new ground-level signage that reads Comcast Building; and, for the first time, the display of the iconic NBC Peacock logo on the building's exterior.
The building was completed in 1933 as part of the Rockefeller Center complex. The noted Art Deco architect Raymond Hood led a team of Rockefeller architects. It was named the RCA Building for its main tenant, the Radio Corporation of America, formed in 1919 by General Electric. It was the first building constructed with the elevators grouped in the central core. During construction, photographer Charles Clyde Ebbets took the famous photograph Lunch atop a Skyscraper on the 69th floor. National Broadcasting Company, had the red and blue networks housed in the new building, which was also nicknamed "Radio City". NBC was the first national radio network in the country and was started by R.C.A. in 1926.
WNBC, channel 4, is the East Coast and main flagship station of the NBC Television Network, located in New York City. WNBC is owned by the NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations group, and operates as part of a television duopoly with Linden, New Jersey-licensed Telemundo owned-and-operated station WNJU (channel 47); both are owned by Comcast subsidiary NBCUniversal, which also holds a minority stake in regional sports network SportsNet New York.
WNBC's studios are co-located with NBC's corporate headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in midtown Manhattan, and its transmitter is based at the Empire State Building. The station is the oldest fully licensed television station in continuous operation in the United States.
In the few areas of the eastern United States where an NBC station is not receivable over-the-air, WNBC is available on satellite via DirecTV and Dish Network (the latter carries the station as part of All American Direct's distant network package), which also provides coverage of the station to Latin American and Caribbean countries. It is also carried on certain cable providers in markets where an NBC affiliate is not available, on LiveTV and Dish Network. DirecTV also allows subscribers in the Los Angeles market to receive WNBC for an additional monthly fee.
Benjamin Franklin Grauer (June 2, 1908 – May 31, 1977) was a US radio and TV personality, following a career during the 1920s as a child actor in films and on Broadway. He began his career as a child in David Warfield's production of The Return of Peter Grimm. Among his early credits were roles in films directed by D.W. Griffith.
Grauer was born in Staten Island, New York. After graduating from Townsend Harris High School, he received his B.A. from the City College of New York in 1930. Grauer started in radio as an actor but soon became part of the broadcasting staff at the National Broadcasting Company. He was one of the four narrators, along with Burgess Meredith, of NBC's public affairs series The Big Story, which focused on courageous journalists.
In 1954, he married interior designer Melanie Kahane.
Grauer's greatest fame lies in his legendary 40-year career in radio. In 1930, the 22-year-old Benjamin Franklin Grauer joined the staff at NBC. He quickly rose through the ranks to become a senior commentator and reporter. He was the designated announcer for the popular 1940s Walter Winchell's Jergens Journal. Perhaps, most importantly, he was selected by Arturo Toscanini to become the voice of the NBC Symphony Orchestra. Grauer took over as announcer in late 1942, and remained until the orchestra was disbanded in June 1954. Toscanini said he was his favorite announcer.
Channel 4 is a British public-service television broadcaster that began transmission on 2 November 1982. Although largely commercially self-funded, it is ultimately publicly owned; originally a subsidiary of the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA), the station is now owned and operated by Channel Four Television Corporation, a public body established in 1990, coming into operation in 1993. With the conversion of the Wenvoe transmitter group in Wales to digital on 31 March 2010, Channel 4 became a UK-wide TV channel for the first time.
The channel was established to provide a fourth television service to the United Kingdom in addition to the television licence-funded BBC's two services and the single commercial broadcasting network, ITV.
Before Channel 4 and S4C, Britain had three terrestrial television services: BBC1, BBC2, and ITV. The Broadcasting Act 1980 began the process of adding a fourth, and Channel 4, along with its Welsh counterpart, was formally created by an Act of Parliament in 1982. After some months of test broadcasts, it began scheduled transmissions on 2 November 1982.

A very few large American cities also had TV before and during World War II. This set sold for $295 starting in April of 1939; which was about half the price of a new 6-cylinder automobile. This rare short clip was recorded when someone pointed a small cine camera at a TV screen in New York. There is no sound although there would have originally been. The show has been tentatively identified as a live broadcast of a play called "The Streets Of New York" from 1938 or 39. Cast unknown. For more on TV's lost decade see my film & TV blog at; http://thesilverscreensurfer.blogspot.ca/2014/07/televisions-forgotten-first-decade.html
The history of television comprises the work of numerous engineers and inventors in several countries over many decades. The first practical demonstrations of television, however, were developed using electromechanical methods to scan, transmit, and reproduce an image. As electronic camera and display tubes were perfected, electromechanical television gave way to all-electronic systems in nearly all applications. This video is targeted to blind users. I took an awesome and very informative nine hour walking tour of New York City with New York Tour1 (www.newyorktour1.com) and our fantastic guide Bobby. It was 94 degrees with almost 100% humidity but that didn't stop us from having a great time in The Big Apple. This video is Part 1 and covers Midtown Manhattan including Times Square, the Diamond District, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, Top of the Rock (with views of Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, and Freedom Tower), Radio City Music Hall, Bryant Park, New York Public Library, Grand Central Station, and the underground subway. Kaise Piya Se Main Kahoon Mujhe Kitna Pyaar Hai
Kaise Piya Se Main Kahoon Mujhe Kitna Pyaar Hai
Aankhon Ko Intezaar Hai Dil Beqeraar Hai
Hoga Milan Apna Mujhe Aitbaar Hai
Hoga Milan Apna Mujhe Aitbaar Hai
Aankhon Ko Intezaar Hai Dil Beqeraar Hai
Kaise Piya Se Main Kahoon Mujhe
Aayenge Jab Woh Saamne
Baahon Mein Main Bhar Loongi
Aayenge Jab Woh Saamne
Baahon Mein Main Bhar Loongi
Maanoongi Unki Baat Ko
Unse Zid Na Karoongi
Chhaane Lagi Hain Madhoshiyaan
Hai, Kya Khumaar Hai
Chhaane Lagi Hain Madhoshiyaan
Hai, Kya Khumaar Hai
Aankhon Ko Intezaar Hai Dil Beqeraar Hai
Kaise Piya Se Main Kahoon Mujhe
Unke Ghar Mein Umer Bhar Rani Banke Rahoongi Main

Har Khushi Doongi Unhe
Unka Dukh Bhi Sahoongi Main
Dil Diya Unko Unhi Pe Jaanisaar Hai
