The two men pulled up in a vehicle and shot a Garland ISD officer. The men were fatally shot by Garland police, and their bodies remain on the street outside the events center. The security officer's wounds were not believed to be life-threatening, but he had been hospitalized. No one was being allowed to leave the facility, where an art show centering on caricatures of Muhammad was being held. Nearby businesses, including a Walmart and Sam's Club, were evacuated. Authorities extended a perimeter 2,000 feet around the Culwell Center, and they were investigating a vehicle within that zone. Reports of the incident began to develop shortly before 7 p.m., when the event had been scheduled to conclude. A speaker had finished his presentation shortly after 6:30 p.m. Throughout the event, there had been no notable protests, despite its controversial nature. Opponents had said the American Freedom Defense Initiative's Muhammad Art Exhibit and Contest on Sunday would be an attack on Islam. But its organizers said they were simply exercising their right of expression. The New York-based American Freedom Defense Initiative was hosting a contest that would award $10,000 for the best cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad at the venue. Caricatures of the Islamic prophet are considered offensive by many Muslims. The American Freedom Defense Initiative paid an additional $10,000 upfront for 40 officers to work security at the event. The group's president, Pamela Gellar, called it "the high cost of freedom." The event was the center of controversy since Garland ISD agreed to rent out the Culwell Center. The decision to book the event came a little more than a week after Islamic militants in France killed 12 people at satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. The organizers said they were exercising their freedom of expression. The district's decision drew criticism from critics and Islamic groups who said the event was an attack on Islam. School Board President Rick Lambert rebuffed the criticism of the district, saying "the Culwell Center is available for rental as long as you comply with the law." Garland had dueling protests during a "Stand With the Prophet in Honor and Respect" in January. Some protesters called for peace and understanding, while the other group argued that Muslims' beliefs posed a threat to the American way of life. Security had to be boosted then, too, but Gellar said it was more than was needed. "When the Italian Coast Guard first got a call Saturday night from a fishing boat alerting it to a large vessel carrying migrants in the Mediterranean between the Libyan coast and the Italian island of Lampedusa, it radioed the nearest commercial ship, a Portuguese freighter called the King Jacob, to go help. What happened when the King Jacob, nearly 500 feet long, approached the multitiered migrant vessel early on Sunday morning is not precisely clear. But an account provided Tuesday by prosecutors in Sicily, based on interviews with survivors, said the captain of the migrant ship, seeing the approaching King Jacob, made “wrong maneuvers” and collided with it. The migrants then crowded to one side of their boat after the collision, causing it to capsize. Investigators are just beginning to debrief the few survivors of the wreck: 28 men out of the estimated 850 people who packed onto the migrant vessel. But they have arrested its captain, identified on Tuesday by prosecutors as Mohammed Ali Malek, 27, a Tunisian, on suspicion of multiple homicide." Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News Members of Iraq’s Yazidis sect follow an ancient religion, which incorporates elements of Islam and indigenous beliefs. After the Islamic State overran parts of northern Iraq, tens of thousands of Yazidis were forced into the Sinjar mountain range, where Islamic State militants — who consider the Yazidi devil worshippers — surrounded them. President Obama claimed on August 14 that the US military intervention in Iraq broke the siege of the trapped Yazidi civilians in the Sinjar mountains. But the Yazidi themselves disagree. Instead, they are adamant that they owe their rescue from the surrounding Islamic State militants to the Syrian Kurdish fighters of the People's Protection Units (YPG). The YPG has been fighting the Islamic State longer and harder than any other group in Syria, and pushed a narrow escape route deep through Islamic State territory to rescue the Yazidis. VICE News travelled through the desert corridor to ascertain the true story of the Yazidis’ last minute escape from the Islamic State. Boko Haram Nigerian army frees another 234 women and children For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS Another 234 women and children have been rescued from Boko Haram militants in Nigeria, the military has announced. It said the operation took place on Thursday in the vast Sambisa forest - a militant hideout - in the north-east of the country. It was not immediately clear if any of more than 200 girls abducted from a school in Chibok in April 2014 were among those freed. Nearly 300 women and children were freed by the army earlier this week. In a tweet, the Nigerian military wrote: "FLASH: Another set of 234 women and children were rescued through the Kawuri and Konduga end of the #Sambisa Forest on Thursday." It said the freed hostages were being screened to establish their identities. The military earlier said it had destroyed 13 camps belonging to the Islamist insurgents in the Sambisa forest, which surrounds a reserve in Borno. Thousands have been killed in northern Nigeria since Boko Haram began its insurgency in 2009 to create an Islamic state. In February, Nigeria's military, backed by troops from neighbouring countries, launched a major offensive against the Islamist fighters. Jon Stewart did a masterful job of tying the irrationality of Red State Kansas’ laws with its actual reality, a bonafide welfare state. Kansas Governor Sam Brownback is one of the most vociferous Right Wing ideologues that pushes his governing principles irrespective of outcome. He almost lost his reelection for governor. Sadly, apathy in Kansas and just about everywhere else in the country allowed those that are destroying the fabric of the nation to retain power. Jon Stewart began his skit with a Kansas gun law. He likely did this to illustrate the nature of the destructive thought process among the current crop of Kansas lawmakers. Kansas Governor Sam Brownback signed a new law that removed the eight hour training and any permit requirement for carrying a concealed weapon. It is the Wild Wild West. Jon Stewart stated an irony. “The same state that believes eight hours of gun training is too much for its gun owners,” Jon Stewart said. “requires a thousand hours of training for its professional aesthetisticians.” Why did they do this? Lawmakers said removing training may actually improve training. Maybe those politicians should be sent to doctors based on their new training tenets. Stewart points out that even gun owners have come out against the bill. However politicians said they rather err on the side of freedom. Jon Stewart was just warming up. He pointed out that when Sam Brownback came into office he cut taxes and regulations. Brownback said he had faith that Kansans know how to spend their dollars better than government. Stewart pointed out that that freedom was extended only to some. After-all, Kansas just passed knew laws expanding restrictions on those who receive assistance, the poor. Brownback micro-manages how they should best spend their money. Of course they can still buy guns. But anything less than utmost necessities are not allowed. Jon Stewart points out that Kansas is a poorly run state with institutions that are on a cutting spiral and thus providing less services to its citizens. Kansas is actually on the dole. They are a welfare state. For every dollar they send to the federal government, they get back one dollar and twenty-nine cents. He suggested that maybe the federal government should consider applying restrictions to the state of Kansas’ expenditures just like Kansas has put restrictions on its own citizens receiving assistance. You see, otherwise Kansas would really fit the definition of the Welfare Queen.

Garland ISD Officer Injured, 2 Dead in Shooting Outside Culwell Center in Garland
(Dallas Morning News) Two gunmen opened fire Sunday evening outside a contest for cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad at Garland ISD\'s Curtis Culwell Center, police said.

The two men pulled up in a vehicle and shot a Garland ISD officer. The men were fatally shot by Garland police, and their bodies remain on the street outside the events center.

The security officer\'s wounds were not believed to be life-threatening, but he had been hospitalized.

No one was being allowed to leave the facility, where an art show centering on caricatures of Muhammad was being held. Nearby businesses, including a Walmart and Sam\'s Club, were evacuated.

Opponents had said the American Freedom Defense Initiative\'s Muhammad Art Exhibit and Contest on Sunday would be an attack on Islam.

The group\'s president, Pamela Gellar, called it \

Members of Iraq’s Yazidis sect follow an ancient religion, which incorporates elements of Islam and indigenous beliefs.

Instead, they are adamant that they owe their rescue from the surrounding Islamic State militants to the Syrian Kurdish fighters of the People\'s Protection Units (YPG).

Another 234 women and children have been rescued from Boko Haram militants in Nigeria, the military has announced.
In a tweet, the Nigerian military wrote: \
