La 2 de TVE presenta dentro de su serie “Imprescindibles”, el documental “Conchita Piquer”, que recupera el filme rodado por Lee DeForest en 1923 con una jovencísima Concha Piquer. La cinta demuestra, por tanto, que la cantante valenciana pudo ser la primera actriz del cine hablado universal. Canción, baile, e interpretación. Ninguna disciplina se resistía a Concha Piquer, cuyo arte cautivó a uno de los pioneros del cine cuando era apenas una niña. En 1923, con tan sólo 17 años, grabó una película de once minutos a las órdenes de Lee DeForest. Fue un hito cinematográfico, puesto que se rodó cuatro años antes de que se estrenara “El cantor de Jazz” (Alan Crosland, 1927), considerada la primera película hablada porque contenía números musicales y algunos diálogos. El olvido golpeó el trabajo anterior de DeForest, que los historiadores dejaron de lado. Sin embargo, la perspectiva histórica sí ha confirmado que Concha Piquer fue la primera que habló y cantó para la gran pantalla en castellano. El guionista del documental, Agustín Tena, encontró en la Biblioteca del Congreso de Washington esa pequeña joya cinematográfica, con recitados, un cuplé andaluz, un fado y una jota interpretados por la Piquer y exhibidos en el cine Rivoli de Nueva York en 1923. Los bailes y canciones fueron registrados en el sistema Phonofilm patentado por DeForest, el primer dispositivo que registraba simultáneamente la imagen y el sonido en el celuloide, como se ha seguido haciendo hasta nuestros días. El documental descubre esta breve película que acompaña de testimonios procedentes del mundo del arte. Entre ellos, el hijo de Manuel Penella, el compositor que acompañó a Concha Piquer en su triunfal aventura artística en Nueva York en los años 20; el historiador de cine Román Gubern, que escribió que la Piquer fue “si no la primera, una de las primeras artistas del cine hablado universal”; Luis Eduardo Aute; Miguel Poveda; Martirio; Manuel López Quiroga; Jaime Sisa; y Santiago Castelo. His book Homage to Catalonia (1938), an account of his experiences in the Spanish Civil War, is widely acclaimed, as are his numerous essays on politics, literature, language, and culture. In 2008, The Times ranked him second on a list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945 Nineteen Eighty-Four, sometimes published as 1984, is a dystopian novel by George Orwell published in 1949.The novel is set in Airstrip One , a province of the superstate Oceania in a world of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance, and public manipulation, dictated by a political system Ingsoc in the government's invented language, Newspeak) under the control of a privileged Inner Party elite that persecutes all individualism and independent thinking as "thoughtcrimes". The tyranny is epitomised by Big Brother, the quasi-divine Party leader who enjoys an intense cult of personality, but who may not even exist. The Party "seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power."The protagonist of the novel, Winston Smith, is a member of the Outer Party who works for the Ministry of Truth which is responsible for propaganda and historical revisionism. His job is to rewrite past newspaper articles so that the historical record always supports the current party line.Smith is a diligent and skillful worker, but he secretly hates the Party and dreams of rebellion against Big Brother. As literary political fiction and dystopian science-fiction, Nineteen Eighty-Four is a classic novel in content, plot, and style. Many of its terms and concepts, such as Big Brother, doublethink, thoughtcrime, Newspeak, Room 101, telescreen, have entered everyday use since its publication in 1949. Moreover, the publication of Nineteen Eighty-Four popularised the adjective Orwellian, which describes official deception, secret surveillance, and manipulation of recorded history by a totalitarian or authoritarian state.

Alan Crosland (August 10, 1894 – July 16, 1936) was an American stage actor and film director.
Born in New York City, New York to a well-to-do family, Alan Crosland attended Dartmouth College. After graduation he took a job as a writer with the New York Globe magazine. Interested in the theatre, he began acting on stage, appearing in several productions with Shakespearian actress Annie Russell.
Crosland began his career in the motion picture industry in 1912 at Edison Studios in The Bronx, New York, where he worked at various jobs for two years until he had learned the business sufficiently well to begin directing short films. By 1917 he was directing feature-length films and in 1920 directed Olive Thomas in The Flapper, one of her final films before her death in September of that year.
In 1925, Crosland was working for Jesse L. Lasky's film production company Famous Players-Lasky (later Paramount Pictures) when he was hired by Warner Bros. to work at their Hollywood studios. He had directed several silent films for Warner, including two with leading star John Barrymore, when he was chosen to direct Al Jolson in 1927's The Jazz Singer. The film would make him famous as the first of the new talkies that changed the course of motion pictures.

Thomas Alva Edison (February 11, 1847 – October 18, 1931) was an American inventor and businessman. He developed many devices that greatly influenced life around the world, including the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and a long-lasting, practical electric light bulb. Dubbed "The Wizard of Menlo Park" (now Edison, New Jersey) by a newspaper reporter, he was one of the first inventors to apply the principles of mass production and large-scale teamwork to the process of invention, and because of that, he is often credited with the creation of the first industrial research laboratory.
Edison is the fourth most prolific inventor in history, holding 1,093 US patents in his name, as well as many patents in the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. He is credited with numerous inventions that contributed to mass communication and, in particular, telecommunications. These included a stock ticker, a mechanical vote recorder, a battery for an electric car, electrical power, recorded music and motion pictures.

Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock, KBE (13 August 1899 – 29 April 1980) was an English film director and producer. He pioneered many techniques in the suspense and psychological thriller genres. After a successful career in British cinema in both silent films and early talkies, Hitchcock moved to Hollywood. On 19 April 1955, he became an American citizen while remaining a British subject.
Over a career spanning more than half a century, Hitchcock fashioned for himself a distinctive and recognisable directorial style. He pioneered the use of a camera made to move in a way that mimics a person's gaze, forcing viewers to engage in a form of voyeurism. He framed shots to maximise anxiety, fear, or empathy, and used innovative film editing. His stories frequently feature fugitives on the run from the law alongside "icy blonde" female characters. Many of Hitchcock's films have twist endings and thrilling plots featuring depictions of violence, murder, and crime, although many of the mysteries function as decoys or "MacGuffins" meant only to serve thematic elements in the film and the extremely complex psychological examinations of the characters. Hitchcock's films also borrow many themes from psychoanalysis and feature strong sexual undertones. Through his cameo appearances in his own films, interviews, film trailers, and the television program Alfred Hitchcock Presents, he became a cultural icon. Hitchocks reputation as a filmmaker is offset by claims that he engaged in obsessive and controlling behaviour towards many of his leading ladies, and that in some cases this extended to physical abuse and sexual harrassment.
