France (French: [fʁɑ̃s]), officially the French Republic (French: République française [ʁepyblik fʁɑ̃sɛz]), is a sovereign state comprising territory in western Europe and several overseas regions and territories. The European part of France, called metropolitan France, extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. France spans 643,801 square kilometres (248,573 sq mi) and has a total population of 66.6 million. It is a unitary semi-presidential republic with the capital in Paris, the country's largest city and main cultural and commercial centre. The Constitution of France establishes the state as secular and democratic, with its sovereignty derived from the people.
During the Iron Age, what is now Metropolitan France was inhabited by the Gauls, a Celtic people. The Gauls were conquered in 51 BC by the Roman Empire, which held Gaul until 486. The Gallo-Romans faced raids and migration from the Germanic Franks, who dominated the region for hundreds of years, eventually creating the medieval Kingdom of France. France emerged as a major European power in the Late Middle Ages, with its victory in the Hundred Years' War (1337 to 1453) strengthening French state-building and paving the way for a future centralized absolute monarchy. During the Renaissance, France experienced a vast cultural development and established the beginning of a global colonial empire. The 16th century was dominated by religious civil wars between Catholics and Protestants (Huguenots).
French may refer to:
Foreign legion or Foreign Legion is a title which has been used by a small number of military units composed of foreign volunteers.
It usually refers to the French Foreign Legion, part of the French Army, established in 1831.
It can also refer to:
French Guiana (pronounced /ɡiːˈɑːnə/ or /ɡiːˈænə/, French: Guyane française; French pronunciation: [ɡɥijan fʁɑ̃sɛz]), officially called Guiana (French: Guyane), is an overseas department and region of France, located on the north Atlantic coast of South America in the Guyanas. It borders Brazil to the east and south, and Suriname to the west. Its 83,534 km2 (32,253 sq mi) area has a very low population density of only 3 inhabitants per km2, with half of its 250,109 inhabitants in 2013 living in the metropolitan area of Cayenne, its capital. By land area, it is the second largest region of France and the largest outermost region within the European Union.
The area was originally inhabited by Native Americans. It was colonised by Frenchmen and other Europeans, who introduced African slaves and later Asian labourers and Hmong refugees from Laos.
The official language is French, while each ethnic community has its own language, of which French Guianese Creole is the most widely spoken.
A territory is a term for types of administrative division, usually an area that is under the jurisdiction of a state. In most countries' terminology, such as the United States and Nigeria, it refers to an organized division of an area that is under control of a country but not formally developed into, or incorporated into, a political unit of that country of equal status to other political units such as states or provinces. In international politics, the term is used particularly in reference to a non-sovereign geographic area which has come under the authority of another government; which has not been granted the powers of self-government normally devolved to secondary territorial divisions; or both.
Common types of territory include:

U.S. employers and their employees are turning to medical tourism from feeling the pain of rising healthcare costs and complicated provisions surrounding the Affordable Care Act. Jack Norton, a human resources manager at Blue Lake Rancheria, heard a cry loud and clear, saving $12,000 in healthcare expenses for his employee in the process. Bruce Ryan, a construction manager at the Casino and Hotel run by the Blue Lake Rancheria tribe in Northern California, needed surgery for a debilitating and painful rotator cuff injury. His employer gave him the option to travel six hours to Stanford Medical Center or across the continent instead. Both employer and employee are resting quite comfortably with the decision.

Dunhuang is located in the southwest of Gansu. The ancient Silk Road passed here after Gansu Corridor. During the Sui and Tang dynasties, Dunhuang art reached its prime. Musée Guimet France treasured hundreds of precious cultural relics from Dunhuang. The most impressive among these is Buddhist painting. With Chinese society becoming more stable, Dunhuang's protection had taken on the status of an important national project. In 1943, the Dunhuang Art Institute was established and Chang Shuhong, an overseas student from Paris, was appointed to the job of preserving the site, a goal to which he remained devoted throughout his life.

When you plan a trip to Nice, France, you’re in good company: This city has been a tourist destination since at least the 18th century. The European aristocracy often spent their winters in the pleasant climate, with a sunset walk on the shoreline being the highlight of each day. You can walk in their footsteps—literally—with a stroll down the Promenade des Anglais, which roughly translates to Walkway of the English. On a tour of Nice, you’ll enjoy the mixture of French and Italian culture that permeates the city’s architecture, public art, and yes, the food. Bon appetit! The residents of Nice love the outdoors, and you will, too, as you explore the Place Massena—the city’s main square, where you can enjoy a snack at a café or do some shopping in its many boutiques. Any Nice sightseeing ...
In this program, we follow in the footsteps of 19th-century aristocrats along Nice's Promenade des Anglais. Then we listen to the graceful reshuffling of personal fortunes at the casino in fairy-tale Monaco, and visit the picturesque artist hangouts of Chagall, Matisse, and Picasso. © 2004 Rick Steves' Europe
The second in a series of 3 ski-travel episodes (Ep1: Kashmir - A Skier's Journey / Ep3: Freshfield Icefield - A Skier's Journey), skiers Chad Sayers and Tobin Seagel continue their worldly winter journey arriving in La Grave, France - home to the Téléphérique La Grave-La Meije, a quirky yet stalwart cable car that transports skiers to 3200m, high in the Southern French Alps. Here, the terrain is wild, unmarked, and unpatrolled - a stripped down, raw version of big mountain skiing. With 2km of vertical drop, a simple ski run journeys through a labyrinth of glaciers, couloirs, and forest glades. Local freerider Bruno Florit, and UIAGM mountain guide Joe Vallone share how unique and special La Grave is, but also reveal the respect a skier must have for the mountain when in search of such de...

The Canadian province of Quebéc is a traditional wintersports destination. However, it is during the warm summers that its elegant capital, Quebéc City, really comes to life. Visit Quebéc City to get a taste of France in a familiar North American setting. The walled Upper Town, with all its towers and grand buildings, is just as charming as the historic Lower Town. A funicular and the so-called L'Escalier Casse-Cou (Breakneck Stairs) connects the two parts of the heritage-listed city center. The Musée de la Civilisation near the waterfront showcases the history of Quebéc, from the First Nations to modern times. The city sprung up around the Notre Dame basilica at Place Royale. Dufferin Terrace is a long promenade with views of the St. Lawrence River. It is overlooked by the landmark Chât...

The UTMB® (Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc) is a 170 km/105 mile race circumventing the Alps, crossing into 3 countries with over 33,000 ft of elevation gain. The CCC® (Chamonix-Courmayeur-Champex) is a 101 km race starting in Courmayeur, Italy and also finishing in Chamonix, France. This race has over 20,000 ft of positive elevation change. Both events are considering one of the toughest at its respective distances. American men have not typically fared well there. As such, Nike athletes David Laney (UTMB), Tim Tollefson (CCC) and Zach Miller (CCC) set out to prove that American men can compete and compete well in the imposing European mo...
