The Little-Known Bowling Alley at McMurdo Station in Antarctica

Back in 1961, the U.S. Navy built a bowling alley at McMurdo Station, a United States research center in Antarctica. The two-lane alley featured a Brunswick manual pinset system, which required pinsetters to clear fallen pins and place new pins by hand. The world’s southernmost bowling alley served the station’s scientists and staff for nearly 50 years. It was dismantled in 2009 due to decades of wear on the alley and the alley building.

A Sculptural Pipe Organ Shaped Like a Hand in a Modernist French Alpine Church

The late 1960s modernist church Notre-Dame des Neiges (“Our Lady of the Snow”) in the French alpine town of Alpe d’Huez is home to a beautiful pipe organ in the form of a hand. The organ was built by German organ builder Detlef Kleuker and the sculptural enclosure was designed by the church’s architect, Jean Marol. The organ was completed in 1978. As organist Xaver Varnus demonstrates, the organ sounds quite beautiful as well.

Expandable Toys Rise to Life as Ethereal Sea Creatures in Lush Music Video for ‘Bryn Marina’ by Sound of Ceres

Filmmaker David Jude Harris has created a wonderfully ethereal video for the song “Bryn Marina” by the band Sound of Ceres. Harris achieved the lush underwater scene using coral-like expandable toys that rose to life with the introduction of fluid.

Bryn Marina is a journey through time and space- a story of how the human intersects with the universe and the relationship they share. Over a year in the making, the Bryn Marina video was filmed in time-lapse using still cameras and macro lenses to capture children’s “grow in water” toys as they slowly sprouted and came to life.

‘Drone Aviary’, A Short Film That Explores the Idea of Drones as Protagonists

“Drone Aviary” is a short film by “collaborative design practice” Superflux that explores the idea of drones as protagonists with their own unique perspectives. It showcases a number of different drones performing a number of different tasks while they quietly and not-so-quietly record their surroundings.

It explores a world where the ‘network’ begins to gain physical autonomy. Drones become protagonists, moving through the city, making decisions about the world and influencing our lives in often opaque yet profound ways.

The short film is part of a larger project–The Drone Aviary Project–that investigates “the social, political and cultural potential of drone technology as it enters civil space.”
