El director de programación de la BBC, Sydney Newman, se encuentra desesperado porque sus shows no atrae al público más deseado - niños y adolescentes -. Decidido a impulsar un proyecto temerario, decide encargarle a su asistente Verity Lambert la producción de un programa de ciencia ficción, basada en una idea tan diferente como revolucionaria. Para ello asciende a Lambert al puesto de productora ejecutiva - algo único para su época -, y la chica pronto descubre que deberá lidiar tanto con la discriminación de sus pares masculinos como con las brutales limitaciones presupuestarias que le impone la emisora. Así es como entre Lambert y Newman terminan creando una tira llamada "Doctor Who", basada en las aventuras protagonizadas por un científico alienígena y su familia a lo largo de todo el universo y de todas las épocas. Y aunque el show estaba pensado como un espectáculo didáctico orientado a los más pequeños, no es sino hasta su segunda emisión - con la aparición de la despiadada raza alienígena de los Daleks - que el programa se convierte en un fenómeno inmensamente popular; pero pronto los productores se topan con un problema casi insalvable y es que su intérprete principal - el veterano actor de carácter William Hartnell - está afectado seriamente por la arterioesclerosis, razón por la cual sus perfomances se vuelven cada vez más inestables. Y ahora deberán decidir cómo manejar la continuidad de un show adorado por millones... los cuales ven a Hartnell como su único e irreemplazable protagonista.

In this episode host Matt Lieberman recaps the episode in which in 1966, William Hartnell (David Bradley) is in his dressing room at the BBC. He insults a stagehand who calls him to the set, where the delay caused by his absence is noticed. Bradley enters in costume, ready to film his last moments as the Doctor and stands in front of the TARDIS console. First gazing at the ceiling, he lowers his head and closes his eyes. In 1963, BBC executive Sydney Newman (Brian Cox) is asked to create a show that will fill a gap between Grandstand and Juke Box Jury. He has an idea for a science-fiction series called Doctor Who and calls his colleague Verity Lambert (Jessica Raine) to tell her. She is hesitant to join, but changes her mind when Newman promotes her to producer. Lambert and director Waris Hussein (Sacha Dhawan), meet up with William Hartnell to discuss how they envision him as the lead character in the show. Despite some trepidation, Hartnell accepts the role. During a rehearsal, Hartnell is dissatisfied that the TARDIS lacks an interior set. Newman then compliments Hartnell's acting ability to save his producer from a troublesome conversation. However, Newman has misgivings about Lambert's handling of her job. This inspires Lambert to become more assertive and she forces the set designer to finally create the TARDIS interior. He does so effortlessly, impressing Lambert. The recording of the pilot episode is beset with difficulties; Newman dislikes the result and orders a re-shoot. Following this, he is finally contented and schedules a transmission date. After the broadcast of the first episode, Lambert and Hussein are nervous, as it occurs the day after the assassination of John F. Kennedy and its potential audience is diminished. Newman summons Lambert and tells her of Controller of BBC1 Donald Baverstock's request to cancel the show, but Lambert emphasises her belief in it and asks him to repeat the first episode before the second is screened. For the next serial, Newman expresses his concern about the Daleks, referring to them as "bug-eyed monsters", which he refused to allow on the show since its creation. However, Lambert eventually convinces him. Following the transmission of the first Dalek story, Lambert realises its popularity when she spots children impersonating the creatures' catchphrase, "Exterminate". Newman is pleased to tell her that the programme achieved a viewership of 10 million and continued production is now assured. As most of the original cast and crew (including Hussein and Lambert) gradually move on to other projects, Hartnell's health declines, which leads to him forget lines and require scenes to be re-shot — something the BBC can ill-afford. Hartnell meets with Newman and asks for a reduced workload, but the decision has already been taken to replace him. Hartnell has grown to embrace playing the Doctor and struggles with his emotional attachment to the character. However, he reluctantly accepts the situation. As he later informs his wife, Heather (Lesley Manville), of the news he breaks into tears and says, "I don't want to go." Before his final scene, Hartnell shares a brief exchange with his successor, Patrick Troughton (Reece Shearsmith). As the cameras are about to record, Hartnell looks across the main console. He sees Matt Smith, who will play the same role nearly 50 years later, and who silently acknowledges Hartnell's legacy.. There to help Matt is co-host Megan Salinas. Here we are!
I saw this AWESOME special about the "birth" od "Doctor Who" and decided to make a tribute! I litteraly adored David Bradley, I mean, he was great in the role of Hurtnell! I ended in tears by the end of the movie...
Anyway, I thought doing a video which reflects both the joy and the sadness of people who worked on Doctor Who from the very beginning and then decided or have to leave, especially William Hurtnell and Verity Lambert.

BBC TV adaptation of P G Wodehouse's novel "Heavy Weather" from the Blandings series.
As far as I know this film never made it to DVD and is currently unavailable, so I thought I may share it here.
Peter O'Toole as Clarence, Lord Emsworth, Richard Briers as Galahad Threepwood, Judy Parfitt as Lady Constance, Sarah Badel as Lady Julia, Roy Hudd as Beach the butler, Ronald Fraser as Sir Gregory Parsloe and Richard Johnson as Lord Tilbury, the recently ennobled George "Stinker" Pyke. Pilbeam was played by David Bamber who became widely known around the same time as Mr. Collins in the BBC's adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Other members of the cast included Rebecca Lacey as Sue Brown, Benjamin Soames as Ronnie Fish and Samuel West as Monty Bodkin.
The screenplay was written by Douglas Livingstone. The director was Jack Gold and the producers, Verity Lambert and David Shanks.

BBC TV adaptation of P G Wodehouse's novel "Heavy Weather" from the Blandings series. As far as I know this film never made it to DVD and is currently unavailable, so I thought I may share it here. Peter O'Toole as Clarence, Lord Emsworth, Richard Briers as Galahad Threepwood, Judy Parfitt as Lady Constance, Sarah Badel as Lady Julia, Roy Hudd as Beach the butler, Ronald Fraser as Sir Gregory Parsloe and Richard Johnson as Lord Tilbury, the recently ennobled George "Stinker" Pyke. Pilbeam was played by David Bamber who became widely known around the same time as Mr. Collins in the BBC's adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Other members of the cast included Rebecca Lacey as Sue Brown, Benjamin Soames as Ronnie Fish and Samuel West as Monty Bodkin. The screenplay was written by Douglas Livingstone. Verity Ann Lambert, OBE (27 November 1935 – 22 November 2007) was an English television and film producer. She is best known as the founding producer of the science-fiction series Doctor Who, a programme which has become a part of British popular culture, and for her association with Thames Television. Her many credits include Adam Adamant Lives!, The Naked Civil Servant, Rock Follies, Minder, Widows, G.B.H., Jonathan Creek and Love Soup.
Lambert began working in television in the 1950s, and continued to work as a producer until the year she died. After leaving the BBC in 1969, she worked for other television companies, notably Thames Television and its Euston Films offshoot in the 1970s and 80s. She also worked in the film industry, for Thorn EMI Screen Entertainment, and from 1985 ran her own production company, Cinema Verity.
The British Film Institute's Screenonline website describes Lambert as "one of those producers who can often create a fascinating small screen universe from a slim script and half-a-dozen congenial players."

Monty Python (sometimes known as The Pythons) was a British surreal comedy group who created Monty Python's Flying Circus, a British television comedy sketch show that first aired on the BBC on 5 October 1969. Forty-five episodes were made over four series. The Python phenomenon developed from the television series into something larger in scope and impact, spawning touring stage shows, films, numerous albums, several books and a stage musical as well as launching the members to individual stardom. The group's influence on comedy has been compared to The Beatles' influence on music.
The television series, broadcast by the BBC from 1969 to 1974, was conceived, written and performed by members Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin. Loosely structured as a sketch show, but with an innovative stream-of-consciousness approach (aided by Gilliam's animation), it pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable in style and content. A self-contained comedy team responsible for both writing and performing their work, the Pythons' creative control allowed them to experiment with form and content, discarding rules of television comedy. Their influence on British comedy has been apparent for years, while in North America it has coloured the work of cult performers from the early editions of Saturday Night Live through to more recent absurdist trends in television comedy. "Pythonesque" has entered the English lexicon as a result.
