Going Hydroponic: Part 4 - Starting Seed in Perlite
Since I'm growing hydroponically, I need a sustainable, re-usable method of starting seed. So, this is my first attempt at seed-starting and thought I'd use the very material it'll grow the plants in....perlite. Using a rayon wick (from mop head) to deliver water and nutrient to the seeds, I was successful at germination and growth. Now, I know, from past experience, that I can use this setup anywhere the bottom of the rayon wick touches water. This gives me some flexibility in setup and location of the net cup, and of course, spurs more ideas I'll share later.- published: 07 Apr 2014

Starting Seeds Under Vermiculite / Perlite
Starting Seeds Under Vermiculite / Perlite
I've been starting almost all my seeds under Vermiculite / Perlite this year and I'm so impressed with their performance and germination rate that I wanted to share it with you all! Blake Kirby - http://goo.gl/5itERx Misspairo - http://goo.gl/uBXE58 I think I may have heard of others Starting Seeds Under Vermiculite / Perlite in the past...but honestly, I'm not sure. What I can tell you, is that I've had about 97% germination with the seeds (all varieties) that I covered with Vermiculite / Perlite and a lesser germination rate in those that I covered with my potting soil. By the time I get done with spring planting season, I'll have a pretty good grasp on whether on not this method is something that I'm going to continue, but I'm almost certain I will. I'm so impressed by this that I'm probably going to do a side-by-side comparison and let you know the results. :) So far, I believe that Starting Seeds Under Vermiculite / Perlite is the way to go! Perlite Filter Media vs. D.E. (Diatomaceous earth) Filter Media
WEBSITE: http://www.swimmingpoollearning.com/ YouTube Video Index -- A list of all of my videos: http://poolmandave.blogspot.com/2014/03/swimming-pool-tips-reviews-how-to-video.html Mrdgvb1 Social Media Links: Google +: https://plus.google.com/+MrDgvb1/posts Blogger: http://poolmandave.blogspot.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Youtube-Mrdgvb1/381257741926763?ref=hl So what is Perlite and how can it be used as a substitute for D.E.? This is from the Perlite Website: Perlite is not a trade name but a generic term for naturally occurring siliceous rock. The distinguishing feature which sets perlite apart from other volcanic glasses is that when heated to a suitable point in its softening range, it expands from four to twenty times its original volume. This expansion is due to the presence of two to six percent combined water in the crude perlite rock. When quickly heated to above 1600°F (871°C), the crude rock pops in a manner similar to popcorn as the combined water vaporizes and creates countless tiny bubbles which account for the amazing light weight and other exceptional physical properties of expanded perlite. This expansion process also creates one of perlite's most distinguishing characteristics: its white color. While the crude rock may range from transparent light gray to glossy black, the color of expanded perlite ranges from snowy white to grayish white. Expanded perlite can be manufactured to weigh as little as 2 pounds per cubic foot making it adaptable for numerous applications. So does it work as well as D.E.? From what I can tell from the test pool the answer so far is yes. A follow-up video is to come in five months where I give monthly updates and show cleaning the Perlite in this filter. For your specific DE filter type and how to clean see my playlist here: D.E. NFT Strawberry root growth Update, Coco Coir vs perlite for rooting the verdict is in!
Hello Everyone :) In this video I'll show you the rooting progress on the NFT Strawberries. I'll also show the difference between the plants root structure in the Coco Coir and the root structure of the plants rooted in Pearlite. As far as I'm concerned it's no contest between the Coco and the pearlite at least at this point. Enjoy your day and be good to each other :) Brock- published: 12 Oct 2013
