Alphonse Marie Louis de Prat de Lamartine (21 October 1790 – 28 February 1869) was a French writer, poet and politician who was instrumental in the foundation of the Second Republic.
Lamartine was born in Mâcon, Burgundy on 21 October 1790. His family was part of the French provincial nobility, and he spent his youth at the family estate. Lamartine is famous for his partly autobiographical poem, "Le Lac" ("The Lake"), which describes in retrospect the fervent love shared by a couple from the point of view of the bereaved man. Lamartine was masterly in his use of French poetic forms. Raised a devout Catholic, Lamartine became a pantheist, writing Jocelyn and La Chute d'un ange. He wrote Histoire des Girondins in 1847 in praise of the Girondists.
He worked for the French embassy in Italy from 1825 to 1828. In 1829, he was elected a member of the Académie française. He was elected a 'député' in 1833, and was briefly in charge of the government during the turbulence of 1848. He was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 24 February 1848 to 11 May 1848. Due to his great age, Jacques-Charles Dupont de l'Eure, Chairman of the Provisional Government, effectively delegated many of his duties to Lamartine. He was then a member of the Executive Commission, the political body which served as France's joint Head of State.

Nous sommes en 1818 et le grand amour du poète Alphonse De Lamartine vient de décéder des suites d'une maladie. Désemparé, le poète se réfugie alors dans la maison natale de son père à Milly en Bourgogne où il écrit son plus beau poème : L’isolement. Plot: French colonists in Africa, several months behind in the news, find themselves at war with their German neighbors. Deciding that they must do their proper duty and fight the Germans, they promptly conscript the local native population. I give the Keynote Address: "The Medium of the Book, 50 Years after Understanding Media," at Baylor Libraries 2014 Symposium, 50 Years after McLuhan, Baylor University, Waco, TX, September 25, 2014. Abstract: A half century after the publication of McLuhan’s Understanding Media seems like a good time to examine the recent evolution of the book itself as a medium. In Understanding Media, McLuhan quotes the French poet Alphonse de Lamartine’s circa 1830 observation that “the book arrives too late”. Today, in a revolution as important as the introduction of Gutenberg’s press, books can arrive instantly anywhere in the world, via Kindles and other ebooks. Σκοπός τους είναι να ενημερώσουν εκπαιδευτικούς Μέσης Εκπαίδευσης, καθηγητές φροντιστηρίων, άνεργους καθηγητές, σχολικούς συμβούλους αλλά και το ευρύτερο κοινό, για τις μεθόδους και τα πορίσματα της επιστημονικής τους έρευνας.

Cette entreprise a pourtant décidé de se pourvoir en Cassation pour tenter de faire annuler le jugement de la Cour d'Appel ! Cet acharnement orchestré contre notre camarade est la suite logique organisée par Valeo pour affaiblir un militant syndical de la CGT. Mais, nous ne lâcherons rien. The Arabs who now claim to be natives of the Holy Land have migrated to Palestine and invaded the land after 1917, from neighboring Arab countries, predominantly from areas now known as Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq.
Where wes this "Palestinian people" ?
In 1835 Alphonse de Lamartine wrote: "Outside the city of Jerusalem, we saw no living object, heard no living sound. . .a complete eternal silence reigns in the town, in the highways, in the country."
In 1844, William Thackeray writes about the road from Jaffa to Jerusalem: "Now the district is quite deserted, and you ride among what seem to be so many petrified waterfalls. We saw no animals moving among the stony brakes; scarcely even a dozen little birds in the whole course of the ride."
In 1857, the British consul in Palestine, James Finn, reported: "The country is in a considerable degree empty of inhabitants and therefore its greatest need is that of a body of population."
In 1866, W.M. Thomson writes: "How melancholy is this utter desolation. Not a house, not a trace of inhabitants, not even shepherds, to relieve the dull monotony ... Much of the country through which we have been rambling for a week appears never to have been inhabited, or even cultivated; and there are other parts, you say, still more barren."
In 1867, Mark Twain - Samuel Clemens, the famous author of "Huckleberry Finn" and "Tom Sawyer", toured the Holy Land. This is how he described the land: "There is not a solitary village throughout its whole extent - not for thirty miles in either direction. There are two or three small clusters of Bedouin tents, but not a single permanent habitation. One may ride ten miles, hereabouts, and not see ten human beings."
In 1874, Reverend Samuel Manning wrote: "But where were the inhabitants? This fertile plain, which might support an immense population, is almost a solitude.... Day by day we were to learn afresh the lesson now forced upon us, that the denunciations of ancient prophecy have been fulfilled to the very letter -- "the land is left void and desolate and without inhabitants." (Jeremiah, ch.44 v.22)
And the Arab invasion :
The British Hope-Simpson Commission recommended, in 1930, "Prevention of illicit immigration" to stop the illegal Arab immigration from neighboring Arab countries.
The British Governor of the Sinai (1922-36) reported in the Palestine Royal Commission Report: "This illegal immigration was not only going on from the Sinai, but also from Transjordan and Syria."
The governor of the Syrian district of Hauran, Tewfik Bey El Hurani, admitted in 1934 that in a single period of only a few months over 30,000 Syrians from Houran had moved to Palestine.
British Prime Minister Winston Churchill noted the Arab influx. Churchill, a veteran of the early years of the British mandate in the Holy Land, noted in 1939 that "far from being persecuted, the Arabs have crowded into the country and multiplied till their population has increased more than even all world Jewry could lift up the Jewish population."
In March 1977, Zahir Muhsein, an executive member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), said in an interview to the Dutch newspaper Trouw: "The 'Palestinian people' does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel."
Walid Shoebat, a former PLO terrorist acknowledged the lie he was fighting for: "Why is it that on June 4th 1967 I was a Jordanian and overnight I became a Palestinian? ... we considered ourselves Jordanian until the Jews returned to Jerusalem. Then all of the sudden we were Palestinians. They removed the star from the Jordanian flag and all at once we had a Palestinian flag."

I give the Keynote Address: "The Medium of the Book, 50 Years after Understanding Media," at Baylor Libraries 2014 Symposium, 50 Years after McLuhan, Baylor University, Waco, TX, September 25, 2014. Abstract: A half century after the publication of McLuhan’s Understanding Media seems like a good time to examine the recent evolution of the book itself as a medium. In Understanding Media, McLuhan quotes the French poet Alphonse de Lamartine’s circa 1830 observation that “the book arrives too late”. Today, in a revolution as important as the introduction of Gutenberg’s press, books can arrive instantly anywhere in the world, via Kindles and other ebooks. But the most significant part of this development may pertain not to readers but authors, who can now can publish books without a publisher and within an hour or less after the book has been written. The advantages and disadvantages of this bypassing of the traditional gatekeeper for authors and the world at large will be explored -- they are mostly advantages -- as well as the decline of gatekeeping in other media. Current conflicts, such as the dispute between Amazon and the traditional publisher Hachette will be examined. Connections between the evolution of the book and other facets of writing on the Web will be traced, including the capacity of readers to communicate directly and easily with authors, in modes akin to the “intelligent writing” that Socrates yearned for in the Phaedrus. Mon cœur, lassé de tout, même de l’espérance,
N’ira plus de ses vœux importuner le sort ;
Prêtez-moi seulement, vallon de mon enfance,
Un asile d’un jour pour attendre la mort.
Voici l’étroit sentier de l’obscure vallée :
Du flanc de ces coteaux pendent des bois épais
Qui, courbant sur mon front leur ombre entremêlée,
Me couvrent tout entier de silence et de paix.
Là, deux ruisseaux cachés sous des ponts de verdure
Tracent en serpentant les contours du vallon ;
Ils mêlent un moment leur onde et leur murmure,
Et non loin de leur source ils se perdent sans nom.
La source de mes jours comme eux s’est écoulée,

Et seule, tu descends le sentier des tombeaux.
Mais la nature est là qui t’invite et qui t’aime ;
Plonge-toi dans son sein qu’elle t’ouvre toujours ;
Quand tout change pour toi, la nature est la même,
Et le même soleil se lève sur tes jours.
De lumière et d’ombrage elle t’entoure encore ;
Détache ton amour des faux biens que tu perds ;
Adore ici l’écho qu’adorait Pythagore,
Prête avec lui l’oreille aux célestes concerts.
Suis le jour dans le ciel, suis l’ombre sur la terre,
Dans les plaines de l’air vole avec l’aquilon,
Avec le doux rayon de l’astre du mystère
Glisse à travers les bois dans l’ombre du vallon.
Dieu, pour le concevoir, a fait l’intelligence ;
Sous la nature enfin découvre son auteur !

Mon cœur, lassé de tout, même de l’espérance,
N’ira plus de ses vœux importuner le sort ;
Prêtez-moi seulement, vallon de mon enfance,
Un asile d’un jour pour attendre la mort.
Voici l’étroit sentier de l’obscure vallée :
Du flanc de ces coteaux pendent des bois épais
Qui, courbant sur mon front leur ombre entremêlée,
Me couvrent tout entier de silence et de paix.
Là, deux ruisseaux cachés sous des ponts de verdure
Tracent en serpentant les contours du vallon ;
Ils mêlent un moment leur onde et leur murmure,
Et non loin de leur source ils se perdent sans nom.
La source de mes jours comme eux s’est écoulée,
Elle a passé sans bruit, sans nom et sans retour :
Mais leur onde est limpide, et mon âme troublée
N’aura pas réfléchi les clartés d’un beau jour.
La fraîcheur de leurs lits, l’ombre qui les couronne,
M’enchaînent tout le jour sur les bords des ruisseaux ;
Comme un enfant bercé par un chant monotone,
Mon âme s’assoupit au murmure des eaux.
Ah ! c’est là qu’entouré d’un rempart de verdure,
D’un horizon borné qui suffit à mes yeux,
J’aime à fixer mes pas, et, seul dans la nature,
À n’entendre que l’onde, à ne voir que les cieux.
J’ai trop vu, trop senti, trop aimé dans ma vie,
Je viens chercher vivant le calme du Léthé ;
Beaux lieux, soyez pour moi ces bords où l’on oublie
L’oubli seul désormais est ma félicité.
Mon cœur est en repos, mon âme est en silence !
Le bruit lointain du monde expire en arrivant,
Comme un son éloigné qu’affaiblit la distance,
À l’oreille incertaine apporté par le vent.
D’ici je vois la vie, à travers un nuage,
S’évanouir pour moi dans l’ombre du passé ;
