Nigeria: Explosions at the Great Mosque of Kano kills a staggering 200 worshippers

Terrorists sprayed fleeing Muslim worshippers with bullets as they fled the Great Mosque in Kano, following a multiple suicide bombing attack at Friday prayers, slaughtering up to 200 people and injuring countless others. The mosque, in northern Nigeria's largest city, which was targeted by the group is situated next to the Emir of Kano's palace in the city. This may provide a motivation for the attack as he serves as an authority figure against radical Islam. Earlier this month, the Emir, Sanusi Lamido, gave his support to vigilantes fighting against the terror group and called on more people to defend against their attacks, saying they should "acquire what they need" to protect themselves. Lamido regularly prays at the Central Mosque in Kano but is currently in Saudi Arabia, according to local media. One worshipper, Aminu Abdullahi, told the agency: "Bombs exploded, one after the other, in the premises of the Grand Mosque seconds after the prayers had started." Attackers kill 81 in suicide attack at crowded mosque in Nigeria’s Kano

A mosque in Kano, Nigeria, was attacked by suicide bombers and gunmen, who killed at least 81 people and injured over 100 others just as Friday prayers were about to commence. No group has claimed responsibility, but the coordinated attack bore the hallmarks of Boko Haram militants. The mosque adjacent to the palace of the emir of Kano was crowded with worshipers on Friday afternoon when a car tried to drive through the crowd and penetrate one of the mosque’s gates. Worshipers stopped the car which then exploded before reaching the gate. Two more suicide blasts erupted in quick succession amid the crowds inside the mosque’s perimeter wall. Witnesses reported seeing children trampled as people scrambled to escape the area. Several gunmen then opened fire on people as they fled. Angry crowds overwhelmed at least four of the gunmen and killed them on the spot. Young men, angry at the failure by police to prevent the attack, vandalized police cars and damaged government buildings. When police arrived at the mosque after what witnesses described as a long delay, they were prevented from entering the mosque by angry crowds. Police later gained entry after using teargas to clear the entrance to the mosque. Kano is the biggest city in northern Nigeria, and has been repeatedly targeted by Boko Haram militants. The mosque which was attacked is presided over by the emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, who, earlier in November, called on the people of northern Nigeria to defend themselves against Boko Haram. The emir, who was Governor of Nigeria’s Central Bank until earlier this year, was abroad when the attack took place.

Algeria airliner missing on Sahara route from Burkina Faso

Algeria's national airline, Air Algerie, says it has lost contact with one of its planes flying from Burkina Faso. Contact was lost about 50 minutes after take-off from Ouagadougou, the airline is quoted by Algeria's state news agency as saying. The passenger airliner, last seen at 0155 GMT, was bound for the Algerian capital Algiers, it added. Flight AH 5017 had 110 passengers and six crew on board, officials said. "In keeping with procedures, Air Algerie has launched its emergency plan," Air Algerie officials, quoted by APS news agency, said. The plane is chartered from Spanish airline Swiftair. In a statement (in Spanish), Swiftair said that the aircraft was an MD83 and that they were unable to establish contact with the plane. The plane was originally scheduled to land at 0510 local time, it said. Flight AH 5017 flies the Ouagadougou-Algiers route four times a week, AFP news agency reported. The Kabara Tafsir is usually recited during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan of every year, at the palace of the Emir of Kano, Nigeria. The Qur'anic text is read by Sheikh Muhammad Hadi Gwani, while Sheikh Qaribullah Nasir Kabara translates into Hausa language. The Kabara Tafsir of Kano, northern Nigeria, is based on the Tafsir al-Jalalayn, a classical Sunni tafsir of the Qur'an, composed first by Jalal ad-Din al-Mahalli in 1459 and then completed by his student Jalal ad-Din as-Suyuti in 1505, thus its name, which means "Tafsir of the two Jalals". It is recognized as one of the most popular exegeses of the Qur'an today due to its simple style and its conciseness: It being only one volume in length. Buba Misawa, Ph.D., is a professor of political science at Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, PA. He received a B.Sc. (Honors) degree from Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria (1981), and a Masters of Public and International Affairs (MPIA) from the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, University of Pittsburgh (1985), and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Pittsburgh (1992). Dr. Misawa served as a visiting assistant professor in the Department of Africana Studies at the University of Pittsburgh (1992-1994). He was appointed assistant professor of political science at Washington and Jefferson College in 1995. He continued to serve as an Adjunct Professor of Political Science in the Department of Africana Studies, University of Pittsburgh until 2008. He was also a visiting professor at the Saint Mary's University (Canada) Extension Program, Banjul, Gambia in 1999. Prior to attending graduate school in the United States, Misawa taught at the University of Maiduguri, Nigeria (1982-83). In addition to his graduate degrees, Professor Misawa holds a certificate in International Security from the University of Pittsburgh. His research interests include Nigerian foreign policy; conflicts and West African security; and US foreign policy towards Africa. Misawa has published on Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Middle East and Africa, African Chieftaincy, and the Dafur conflict in the Sudan. He is currently working on a book: The dimensions of African Security Problems; and co-author of another book (Forthcoming, December 2014): The Making of a Chief Servant: The Biography of the Talban Minna and Governor of Niger State, Nigeria. Professor Misawa is the recipient of many distinguished research honors such as: The International Public Service Award, Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA), University of Pittsburgh, 2009 (an Award given to GSPIA Alumni); the Rotary International Scholarship for University Teachers (1999); the Fulbright-Hays Summer Travel Grant for research (to Ghana, 2003 & 2007); the Washington and Jefferson College’s President’s Entrepreneurial Fund for Summer Research (2005); and the University of Maiduguri Overseas Study Fellowship (1983-1987). He has been a consultant to the University of the Gambia in numerous ways since its founding. Misawa was a member of the International panel that set up the University of the Gambia (UTG) in 2000. Professor Misawa has completed numerous study trips to The Gambia and Senegal with students from Washington & Jefferson College, the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, and Juniata College, since 2001.

Nigeria 2015 Elections Buhari Buried Jonathan in Kano The All Progressive Congress presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari has posted a comfortable lead over his closet rival, and sitting President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in about 7 local government areas announced by INEC Sunday afternoon. The results announced by INEC Returning officer, Professor Mohammed Hamisu shows that the former Dictator won in all councils with wider margin. The breakdown as announced by the former Vice Chancellor of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi indicated that in Albasu local government area: APC scored 34,000 votes, while PDP pulled 3,047 votes. In Kibiya, APC posted 23,000 votes, while PDP scored 4,999votes. Also in Gabasawa council area, the APC received 31,000 votes, while the PDP pulled 8, 840 votes. The INEC further announced that in Bagwai local council, the APC scored 3 8 , 750 votes against PDP 8,159 votes. In Kunchi council, the APC scored 24,542 votes as against PDP 2,921 votes. In Tsanyawa local government area, APC pulled 32,662 votes, to PDP 4,819 votes. Gaya local council, the APC pulled 38,085 votes to PDP 1, 888 votes.
