The Royal Gurkha Rifles Regiment leads the way in the final battle of Exercise Saber Strike in Latvia.
The Royal Gurkha Rifles (RGR) is a rifle regiment of the British Army, forming part of the Brigade of Gurkhas.
Unlike other regiments in the British army, soldiers are recruited from Nepal, which is neither a dependent territory of the United Kingdom nor a member of the Commonwealth.
The Gurkhas are a unique unit in the Army with a reputation of being amongst the finest and most feared soldiers in the world. The Victorians identified them as a "martial race", perceiving in them particularly masculine qualities of toughness.
Their motto is: Better to die than live a coward.

Probably the best known, and to their adversaries the most feared, body of fighting men in the British Army, Gurkhas were first recruited to serve the British Crown 200 years ago in 1815 and for all those years their signature weapon has remained the Kukri.

Gurkha (
/ˈɡɜrkə/ or /ˈɡʊərkə/; also spelled Gorkha or Ghurka; Hindi: गोर्खा "Gorkha" Nepali: गोर्खाली "Gorkhali") is an ethnic community from Nepal. Their name derives from the Hindu warrior-saint Guru Gorakhnath (8th century ).
Gorkhas are indigenous people mainly from mid-western and eastern Nepal. Well known for their history and their role in the unification of modern day Nepal (Gorkha Platoon, modern day Nepalese Army), the Brigade of Gurkhas (British Army), Gurkha Rifles (Indian Army). Gurkha units are closely associated with the khukuri, a forward-curving Nepalese knife of formidable fighting power. Former Chief of staff of the British Indian Army, Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, once famously said about Gurkhas: "If a man says he is not afraid of dying, he is either lying or is a Gurkha."
After the conflict with the British, Gurkhas have enjoyed considerable fame in various battlefields. The name originally referred to people from central Nepal, but ever since the conquest of Nepal by Gurkha kings, the word Gurkha is liberally applied to those who speak Nepali.

The Gurkhas: 200 Years of Service
For 200 years, the Gurkhas have served with the British Army. Their numbers currently stand at around three and a half thousand. While the UK has recently hosted ceremonies to mark the anniversary, soldiers from the 2nd Battalion Royal Gurkha Rifles have been in Latvia taking part in Exercise Saber Strike, which involves 6000 military personnel from 13 nations. -

Unlike other regiments in the British army, soldiers are recruited from Nepal, which is neither a dependent territory of the United Kingdom nor a member of the Commonwealth.
The Gurkhas are a unique unit in the Army with a reputation of being amongst the finest and most feared soldiers in the world. The Victorians identified them as a "martial race", perceiving in them particularly masculine qualities of toughness.

They still carry into battle their traditional weapon - an 18-inch long curved knife known as the kukri.
In times past, it was said that once a kukri was drawn in battle, it had to "taste blood" - if not, its owner had to cut himself before returning it to its sheath.
Now, the Gurkhas say, it is used mainly for cooking.
