Russia (29:47.5) did manage to claim one of the two gold medals available on Sunday, racing to victory in the mixed relay. Composed of sitting skiers Natalia Kocherova and Alexey Bychenok with Elena Remizova and guide Maksim Pirogov, and Stanislav Chokhlaev with guide Evgenii Fatkhullin, Russia won the relay on the final lap, gaining a minute in time to capture the top spot on the podium. Ukraine (30:26.8), formed of Anatolii Kovalevskiy, guided by Oleksandr Mukshyn, and standing skiers Oleksandra Kononova and Liudmyla Liashenko, took silver after leading at the second and third splits. Norway's (30:38.9) team of sit-skier Mariann Marthinsen, standing athlete Nils-Erik Ulset and the duo of Eirik Bye with guide Kristian Myhre Hellerud, claimed bronze. Ulset, who skied the second leg of his team's race, was happy to return to the podium and close out his experience in Cable with a team medal. "We were hoping to be on the podium and everybody on the team did a good job," Ulset said. "You have more [classes] competing for the same medal today. It's something else when you compete [for] the same medals so that's fun." The final medals table shows Russia finishing with 24 gold, 16 silver and 15 bronze medals for a total of 55 medals overall. Russia’s visually impaired skiers took both men’s and women’s cross-country sprint titles at the 2015 IPC Nordic Skiing World Championships in Cable, Wisconsin, USA, on Wednesday (28 January). The men’s event was an all-Russian top three with Vladimir Udaltcov and guide Ruslan Bogachev winning gold whilst compatriots Oleg Ponomarev, guided by Andrei Romanov, took silver. Stanislav Chokhlaev and guide Evgenii Fatkhullin raced to bronze, their third medal of Cable 2015. Elena Remizova and guide Maksim Pirogov also cruised to gold in the women’s race, giving them their third medal. Silver was won by Ukraine’s Oksana Shyshkova and guide Lada Nesterenko, a feat Shyshkova was pleased with given the competition. “I have very strong competitors so as usual, the race was quite tough,” Shyshkova said through a translator. “I’m happy with the result and satisfied with my skiing.” Russia’s Iuliia Budaleeva, guided by Tatiana Maltseva, crossed the line in third to win bronze. After being held off the podium on Tuesday (27 January), Ukraine’s Maksym Yarovyi returned by winning gold in the men’s sitting. Russian Alexey Bychenok claimed silver and the USA’s Andrew Soule claimed his third medal in four races with bronze. Soule’s achievement was part of a two-medal performance for the host country as Oksana Masters was awarded an emotional bronze in the women’s sitting. “It is really rewarding to get on the podium,” Masters said. Germany’s Andrea Eskau powered herself to her second gold medal and Norwegian Mariann Marthinsen took silver to round out the podium in the women’s sitting. Ukraine’s Oleksandra Kononova continued her domination in the women’s standing, charging to an unbelievable fourth gold medal and 100 per cent record in cross-country and biathlon from Cable 2015. Kononova beat Sweden’s Paralympic champion Helene Ripa into silver, whilst Kononova’s teammate Luidmyla Liashenko took bronze. “It is a fight but in a good way,” Ripa said. “I think she [Kononova] is very happy today that she beat me and I think she had a very good race today and I am very happy to be second.” The men’s standing saw Russia take their third gold of the day courtesy of Vladislav Lekomtcev. France’s Benjamin Daviet took silver to once again find his way onto the podium. “It was a hard race,” Daviet said with the help of a translator. “Third medal in three days. It is very good.” Lekomtcev’s compatriot Rushan Minnegulov took bronze to round out the top three. Competition continues on Friday (30 January) with biathlon long distance events. Races start at 10am (CST) every day, with a rest day on 29 January. Live results will be available at the Cable 2015 website as well as a livestream. Low resolution pictures will be available at the IPC's Flickr account and high resolution versions are available on request via ipc.media@paralympic.org.
The Ukrainian duo of Oleksandra Kononova and Ihor Reptyukh captured long distance biathlon golds at the 2015 IPC Nordic Skiing World Championships in Cable, Wisconsin, USA, on Friday (30 January). Paralympic champion Kononova (38:21.4) stormed to victory over 12.5km, putting herself on top of the podium for an incredible fifth time in both cross-country and biathlon women’s standing events. “[They] are two different sports so the preparation is different,” Kononova said. “Before this biathlon [race] I was trying to calm down, to get the thoughts in order and prepare mentally for this race.” Compatriot Liudmyla Liashenko (39:10.3) claimed silver. Finland’s Maija Jarvela (41:34.6) missed just one target on the day to take bronze. Reptuykh (39:23.9) shot clean in the men’s 15km standing event to make it a double gold for Ukraine. Russian Vladislav Lekomtcev (39:28.7) had his bid for a third biathlon gold medal at Cable 2015 dashed as he took silver. France’s Benjamin Daviet (39:42.0) shot perfectly to finish with the bronze. Lekmotcev’s teammate Alexey Bychenok (46:31.2) returned to the top of the podium in the men’s sitting thanks to his sharp shooting. The USA's Andrew Soule (46:56.9) also came away perfect from the range, giving him silver for his fourth medal of Cable 2015. “I don’t think I really came in here with any really expectations of specific place or performances,” Soule said. “It was important to make sure I got all hits. There were only three cleans out here today and hitting a target in this long individual event is incredibly important.” Russian Grigory Murygin (47:15.4) missed one shot on his third trip to the range, forcing him into bronze. Russia charged to another podium sweep in the women’s event, with Marta Zaynullina (45:31.4) claiming her first gold to beat Paralympic champion teammate Svetlana Konovalova (45:51.8). Natalia Kocherova (45:53.0) took bronze to earn her first medal of the competition. Nikolay Polukhin (41:17.8) and guide Andrey Tokarev claimed their third gold medal for Russia in the men’s. Fellow countrymen Stanislav Chokhlaev (41:35.3), guided by Evgenii Fatkhullin, took the silver. Ukraine’s Iurii Utkin (44:00.7) and guide Vitalii Kazakov completed the podium. Russian Iuliia Budaleeva (40:29.0), guided by Tatiana Maltseva, claimed the women’s gold for the third straight biathlon race. They were joined on the podium by compatriot Elena Remizova (42.26.9) and guide Maksim Pirogov, who fought their way to silver. Ukraine’s Olga Prylutska (42:31.1), guided by Borys Babar, took bronze to round out the podium. The competition continues on Saturday (31 January) with the middle distance cross-country races. Races start at 10:00 (CST) every day. Live results will be available at the Cable 2015 website as well as a livestream. There has been a change to the schedule as a result of very cold temperatures predicted for Sunday. The cross-country middle distance will now take place on Saturday (31 January) and the cross-country relay will round-off the 2015 World Championships on Sunday (1 February). Low resolution pictures will be available at the IPC's Flickr account and high resolution versions are available on request via ipc.media@paralympic.org.
The USA’s Andrew Soule continued his race into the record books at the 2015 IPC Nordic Skiing World Championships in Cable, Wisconsin, USA, on Saturday (31 January), winning silver in the men’s middle distance cross-country sitting. The medal was Soule’s third silver and fifth medal overall of the competition, a new record for a US skier at an IPC Nordic Skiing Worlds. Soule was understandably happy with the performance, crediting the past year of training to achieving his results on home soil. “Everything has come together with all of our plans,” Soule said. Russia’s Aleksandr Davidovich (27:45.3) finished ahead of Soule, whilst his compatriot Alexey Bychenok (28:18.9) took bronze to increase his medal haul to five at the end of the individual events. Germany’s Andrea Eskau (16:02.3) raced to some history of her own in the women’s sitting, taking gold to sweep the three cross country races, though she credited her competitors for pushing her. “It was close, all races, but in the end I have the luck to win,” Eskau said. Oksana Masters (16:07.5) claimed silver as her second medal of the week and Norwegian Mariann Marthinsen (16:12.3) took bronze. Ukraine’s Oleksandra Kononova (15:53.0) continued her run of excellent form to win all six women’s standing events across biathlon and cross-country. Fellow countrywoman Liudmyla Liashenko (16:29.9) took silver. Swedish skier Helene Ripa (17:02.8) took bronze to round out her individual competition with two medals. “This race was much more tougher for me,” Ripa said. “I had in my mind [Kononova] could be tired after all those races, but I still know that she’s very hard to beat. Russian Vladislav Lekomtcev (25:41.4) reclaimed the top spot on the podium in the men’s standing. Teammate Ruslan Minnegulov (25:56.2) won silver. Ukraine’s Ihor Reptyukh (26:13.2) claimed bronze to round out the podium. Stanislav Chokhlaev (26:15.2), guided by Evgenii Fatkhullin, led the third straight sweep Russian of the men’s visually impaired podium. Nikolay Polukhin (26:47.4) and guide Andrey Tokarev took silver while the team of Vladimir Udaltcov (27:23.4), guided by Ruslan Bogachev, won bronze. Speaking through a translator, Polukhin said he was happy for Chokhlaev, adding he felt that he “overachieved” in the individual races. “I was planning to compete in biathlon events this week and was planning to do well in the middle distance,” Polukhin continued. Russia retained the top spot in the women’s visually impaired as Elena Remizova (16:00.4), guided by Maksim Priogov, took gold ahead of compatriot Iuliia Budaleeva (16:25.3) and guide Tatiana Maltseva. Ukraine’s Oksana Shyshkova (17:40.3) and guide Lada Nesterenko held on for the bronze medal. The competition concludes on Sunday (1 February) with the cross-country relays, which start at 10am (CST). Live results will be available at the Cable 2015 website as well as a livestream. In the women's sitting, Eskau powered her way to her second medal of the competition, taking gold with an emphatic finish in 40:14.9. Marta Zaynullina (40.21.7) added a silver to Russia's medal haul whilst Norway's Mariann Marthinsen (41:12.3) was third. "The temperature was not really a problem because it is not that cold yet," Eskau said. "The course was a little bit slower than yesterday and my strategy was not to push too hard on the first run." Aleksandr Davidovich claimed Russia's latest gold medal in the men's event, finishing in a time of 44:06.2. Ukraine's Maksym Yarovyi (44:11.3), Saturday's (24 January) short distance biathlon gold winner, took silver. Making good on his only race of the competition, Canada's Brian McKeever (43:44.5), guided by Eric Carleton, skied to gold in the men's visually impaired. "It is nice to be on fast snow," McKeever said following his victory, which adds to his gold medal from the same event at Sochi 2014. France's Thomas Clarion (45:29.8) and guide Julien Bourla carried themselves to silver while the Russian duo of Stanislav Chokhlaev (45.42.2) and guide Evgenii Fatkhullin picked up the bronze. Ukraine’s Maksym Yarovyi powered his way to gold on Saturday (24 January) at the 2015 IPC Nordic Skiing World Championships in Cable, Wisconsin, USA, as Russian Paralympic champion Roman Petushkov failed to make it onto the podium. Yarovyi (22.02.7) took victory in the men’s biathlon sprint sitting, shooting perfectly and finishing 5.1 seconds ahead of the USA’s Andrew Soule (22.07.8). Soule delivered a medal to his home country in the first event possible, winning silver in a time of 22:07.8. Russian biathlete Alexey Bychenok missed one shot, finishing third in 22:20.6. “Our team has put together a great effort the whole year since Sochi,” Soule said. “We have put so much investment and so much effort into our shooting training programme and our performance plans for skiing.” It was a day to forget for Petushkov, the most decorated athlete from Sochi 2014, who missed one shot to finish in thirteenth. The Russian women picked up where the men left off in the sitting events as Nadezhda Fedorova (22:44.0) captured gold and compatriot Marta Zaynullina (22:45.7) took silver. Germany’s Andrea Eskau (22:48.8) denied Russia a sweep of the medals, finishing third. Russia’s Vladislav Lekomtcev (18:40.2) continued the gold medal run for his country in the men’s standing. Biathlete Benjamin Daviet (18:47.9) won France’s first medal, taking silver behind Lekomtcev. Norwegian Nils-Erik Ulset (18:54.0) placed third, starting his Championships the right way. “This race today, it gives me more confidence in the races to come,” Ulset said. “This is not my strongest race so finishing this close to these guys today was good.” Ukraine made their mark in the women’s standing event as Oleksandra Kononova (18:42.2) and Liudmyla Liashenko (19.07.1) finished first and second respectively. Kononova crossed the line ahead of Liashenko despite missing three targets. “I felt crazy emotions because I had three penalties,” Kononova said through the help of a translator. “After the second shooting, I had to go really fast to get this time. That’s why I just skied at my maximum speed. That was the only change.” Finland’s Maija Jarvela (19:17.5) took bronze in the event with a perfect day of shooting. Russian Nikolay Polukhin (18:55.4) and guide Andrey Tokarev cruised to victory in the men’s visually impaired race, finishing ahead of Ukraine’s Anatolii Kovalevskyi (19:34.2) and guide Oleksandr Mukshyn. Vladimir Udaltcov (19:56.1) and guide Ruslan Borgachev gave Russia a bronze medal to round out the top three spots. Their teammates Iuliia Budaleeva and guide Tatiana Maltseva (18:31.3) finished ahead of the Ukrainian pairing of Oksana Shyshkova (20:02.2) and guide Lada Nesterenko in the women’s visually impaired. Germany found its way back onto the podium, with Vivian Hosch (20:12.1) and guide Florian Schillinger capturing bronze. “I just tried to get every part as best as I can,” Hoesch said. “Good shooting, good skiing, I put in everything.” Live results will be available at www.paralympic.org/cable-2015/schedule-results.
