Dana Elaine Owens (born March 18, 1970), professionally known by her stage name Queen Latifah, is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, actress, model, television producer, record producer, comedienne, and talk show host. Born in Newark, New Jersey, she signed with Tommy Boy Records in 1989. In November 1989, she had released her debut album All Hail the Queen (1989), featuring the hit single "Ladies First" with Monie Love. Latifah released her second album Nature of a Sista (1991), which was her final album with Tommy Boy Records.
In 1993, Latifah starred as Khadijah James on the FOX sitcom Living Single, from 1993 to 1998. Her third album Black Reign (1993), which went gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and peaked at number 60 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album also includes the hit single "U.N.I.T.Y." which won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance in 1994 and hit the Billboard Hot 100. Latifah starred in the lead role of Set It Off (1996) as Cleopatra "Cleo" Sims, alongside Jada Pinkett-Smith. Between 1996 and 2000, controversy between Latifah and Foxy Brown received widespread media attention. She released her fourth album in 1998 Order in the Court (1998) with Motown Records. Queen Latifah gained mainstream success after appearing in Chicago (2002) as Matron "Mama" Morton and she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, losing to Catherine Zeta-Jones.
The United Negro College Fund, or UNCF, is an American philanthropic organization that funds scholarships for black students and general scholarship funds for 39 private historically black colleges and universities. The UNCF was incorporated on April 25, 1944 by Frederick D. Patterson (then president of what is now Tuskegee University), Mary McLeod Bethune, and others. The UNCF is headquartered at 1805 7th Street, NW in Washington, DC. In 2005, the UNCF supported approximately 65,000 students at over 900 colleges and universities with approximately $113 million in grants and scholarships. About 60% of these students are the first in their families to attend college, and 62% have annual family incomes of less than $25,000. UNCF also administers over 450 named scholarships.
The UNCF's president and chief executive officer is Michael Lomax. Past presidents of the UNCF included William H. Gray and Vernon Jordan.
Though set up to address funding inequities in education resources for African Americans, the UNCF-administered scholarships are open to all ethnicities; the great majority of recipients are still African-American. It provides scholarships to students attending its member colleges as well as to those going elsewhere.

"Lady Marmalade" is a song written by Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan. It became a popular hit in 1975, recorded by the American girl group Labelle. The song is famous for its sexually suggestive chorus of "Voulez-vous coucher avec moi (ce soir)?", which translates into English as "Do you want to sleep with me (tonight)?" Labelle held the number-one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for one week, and also topped the Canadian RPM national singles chart.
The song has had many cover versions over the years. In 1998, girl group All Saints released a cover of the song that peaked at number one on the UK Singles Chart. The 2001 version by singers Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mýa, and Pink, recorded for the Moulin Rouge! soundtrack was a number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 for 5 weeks. "Lady Marmalade" was also a song to reach number one by two different musical acts in America.
Labelle's version of "Lady Marmalade" was produced by Allen Toussaint and Vicki Wickham. It was released on August 3, 1974 as the first single from the album Nightbirds. The song was inspired by Bob Crewe's first-hand observations of New Orleans. After it was first recorded by Kenny Nolan's group Eleventh Hour in 1974, on Eleventh Hour's Greatest Hits LP, Labelle's producer Allen Toussaint decided to record it for Nightbirds. Patti LaBelle sang lead vocals on "Lady Marmalade" with backing vocals being contributed by band mates Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash. The song's chorus, "Voulez-vous coucher avec moi (ce soir)?", appeared previously in the play A Streetcar Named Desire, uttered by the promiscuous Blanche DuBois. Lyrically, "Lady Marmalade" is about a prostitute. Patti LaBelle, the lead female vocal of the band, expressed that, "I didn't know what it was about. Nobody, I swear this is God's truth, nobody told me what I'd just sung a song about."

Our work is fueled by our fundamental belief that any young person empowered with resources and access, is capable of achieving amazing things in changing landscapes. Through our I.C.E (Innovation, Commercialization and Entrepreneurship) and S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) initiatives, we have introduced hundreds of students to the giants of the tech world, created a pipeline of the next generation of young black innovators, and contributed to a culture that inspires students to disrupt industries and change their communities.

Fantasia Covers 'Lady Marmalade' at the UNCF Tribute to Patti LaBelle here is an except from an EW Popwatch review that describes it well: "Fantasia covers 'Lady Marmalade.' Roof height at venue permanently altered" by Michael Slezak " ...my heart skipped all kinds of beats to discover Fantasia covering "Lady Marmalade" at a UNCF tribute to Patti LaBelle. Around the 1:40 mark, 'Tasia begins to tear into the song like a starved wolf into a perfectly cooked filet mignon -- and I mean that in the best possible way. When she's done, there's nothing left but the realization that you've witnessed the kind of soul-searing greatness that never seems to happen in our polite, sound-bite-ready, auto-tuned times"

The dynamic blueprint, that is Queen Latifah, has mastered the art of becoming a successful female MC, owning a business, winning awards for her acting roles, and even hone in on an innovative talk show — and stopped by Sway in the Morning to talk about it. Where was the point, in which Queen turned from rapper to business woman? "That was from the beginning." She tells Sway. "There was no turning point. I knew I had to do, it was something I was doing in regular life." Latifah started rapping at 17, and grew her empire from there. What's next for this go-getter? "a lot of film projects, the talk show, & family," she tells us. Watch above for more, plus take notes on the advice she gives to women about dealing with sexism and chauvinistic men.
