(Oct. 7) ---------------------------------------- [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] (Rochester, NY) Surveillance video cameras hidden in a nursing home captures nurses and assistants allegedly neglecting and abusing those under their care. (Andrew Cuomo, NY Attorney General) "Here you literally have the most vulnerable in society, people who are disabled, people who can't help themselves." New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has ordered multiple cameras hidden in nursing homes in the state, resulting in 26 convictions so far. "They are hidden cameras that can be placed in numerous locations throughout the room, which are almost to detect." This video is from the "Jennifer Matthew Nursing and Rehabilitation Center" in Rochester, New York. It shows one woman whipping a patient in the face with his own short. Another man is transferred by one person, instead of the required two people. Other video shows rough treatment of patients during physical therapy, and one patient was not turned and re-positioned for 76 hours…instead of every two hours as prescribed. ((Heidi Wendel, Medicaid Fraud Control Unit)) "The effect of that is it can cause pressure sores, ulcers, which are very dangerous for patients like this that has no control over his own body." This week, police arrested four more nursing home workers, at a facility on Long Island called the "Medford Multicare Center." Prosecutors say the workers failed to give a 84-year-old his medication. They also allegedly neglected to give the man water for hours on end. "He stunk, he was filthy. They left him in his own feces." One of those charged in the Long Island case is Licensed Practical Nurse Rima Chaudhry. "It's an overreaction, she's over charged." Her attorney says she's a poor single mother trying to do her best. "She was put in a position where she had to the best that she could for this patient under very, very difficult conditions in this nursing home: short staffed, sometimes she had 35 patients she was responsible for." The Attorney General says he's got multiple investigations underway using surveillance cameras in nursing homes, which are installed at the request of family members, co-workers and other patients who suspect neglect and abuse.
