Westonaria

Westonaria, as its name implies, is a conurbanation of ten suburban townships in the west of the Gauteng province of South Africa and more specifically, in the district of the West Rand. During the apartheid era, this area was not excluded from the segregating laws and black citizens were forced to live outside of town in the town of Bekkersdal. Today, however, approximately 156,598 residents are able to live together without restriction in this area. It is thus a potent reminder of South African history and the development in South Africa since then.

The name Westonaria is a homophone for western area. The reasoning behind this being that it lies in the Western section of Gauteng and that it was named after the township developing company, Western Areas Limited. Westonaria being a collection of suburban townships, thus embraces its history and identity as is the true spirit of South Africa.
