Springs' original reason for being, coal and gold, has been replaced by manufacturing and engineering industries which includes processed metals, chemicals, paper and foodstuffs. Springs houses: the only Kellogg's factory in South Africa; Impala Platinum's precious and base metal refineries; PFG Building Glass, the only producer of float glass on the continent; Zincor, the only zinc producer in Africa which produces all South Africa's requirement of this metal.
The name of the city derives from the large number of springs in the area which supports the local industries, farms and residents.
Springs is not a tourist town but there are a number of attractions nearby. Paragliding is offered for the daring.
Numerous notable residents hail from Springs: an RAF pilot who led an escape from a Nazi prisoner of war camp; singers; potilicians; poets and writers; international sportsmen (an Olympian) and engineers.
The job market caters for chefs to industrial engineers so there is a job for everybody.
