Newcastle serves the surrounding agriculture, textile and service industries as well as the coal and steel mining operations. Arcelor Mittal produces over 1.5 million tons of long steel products annually and there is a chrome chemical plant.

British preparation work for the Pretoria Convention of 1881 was done at Newcastle and two schools, Newcastle High School and St. Dominic's Academy Newcastle, are home to several buildings that have been declared National Monuments.

Visit the Carnegie Art Gallery or listen to the Northern KwaZulu-Natal Youth Choir; educate yourself at the Amajuba Hydroponic Technopark or soak up history in the Fort Amiel Museum and various battle sites outside the town. Hilldrop House, the dwelling of author H. Rider Haggard who wrote King Solomon's Mines, She and Jess should be visited.

Newcastle produced notables such as flying ace and creator of chess puzzles Lieutenant Gerald Frank Anderson; operatic tenor Fanie de Jager; footballer Siyabonga Nkosi and many other sportsmen, businessmen, politicians and even a Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.
