Most of Mpumalanga is utilised by agriculture (68%) with maize, wheat, sorghum, barley, sunflower seed, soybeans, groundnuts, sugar cane, vegetables, coffee, tea, cotton, tobacco, citrus, subtropical and deciduous fruit being grown with beef, mutton, wool, poultry and dairy being contributors. There are extensive wood producing forests around Sabie and Ngodwana is the site of one of South Africa's largest paper mills.
Mpumalanga accounts for 83% of South Africa's coal production with gold, platinum group metals, silica, chromite, magnetite, zinc, antimony, cobalt, copper, iron, manganese, tin, andalusite, chrysotile asbestos, kieselguhr, limestone, magnesite, talc and shale being mined.
Mpumalanga is also a popular tourism destination. The Kruger National Park is one of the biggest wildlife reserves in the word at 20,000 km2. The Sudwala Caves, Blyde River Canyon, Berlin Falls, the historic Mac Mac Falls and the Elands River Falls will keep you busy.
