The hospitality and catering industry in South Africa has seen some very good times and more recently some very bad times during the economic crisis. Fortunately business is picking up again and the prospects for this very important industry are looking better than last year. Hospitality and catering services includes hotels, guesthouses, B&B;'s, self catering apartments, lodges and motels. Within all of these places there are dedicated employees including managers, chefs, administrators, debtors and creditors clerks, kitchen staff, wait staff, cleaning staff, drivers, tour guides, hotel room service staff and even telesales employees.
General responsibilities and skills within the hospitality and catering industry include:
- Overseeing the daily activities within the hotel/guesthouse etc. This includes everything from the kitchen to the administration department
- Reporting on all discrepancies found during stock taking and developing effective methods in order to prevent future discrepancies
- Keeping customer service at the forefront of all activities
- Ensuring that customers are booked in and out efficiently and on time
- Setting targets and working towards them continuously
